A fun story - When The World's End came out, I went to a trilogy marathon showing where they showed Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz first, timed so that The World's End would start at midnight on its launch day. Cornettos were served in the gaps between each film, and each film also had a little intro by Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright. In the intro for this film, Simon Pegg told us "Shaun of the Dead contains 77 uses of the F word, and we want you to applaud every time you hear it."

"You've got red on you." Fun fact, there was a cult classic show called Spaced with a lot of the actors from the cornetto trilogy, and the fans loved it so much that they agreed to be extra's as zombies in this for the low budget. They were originally going to do it for free, but due to laws they had to be paid and so they used a loop hole that allowed them to pay the fans £1 each to be zombies for the scenes with hordes of zombies.

I love all three movies, and for the longest time I refused to pin down a "favorite." Because doing so felt like betraying the other two movies, to me. I always felt like that chick was an "ex," who still clung to Shaun like a bestie, because she hoped he would one day break up with Liz, and fall back into her arms. But she didn't make it super obvious. The fact that she's always so happy to see him, regardless of the situation, and she specifically shows up with the freaking ARMY, to save him from the Winchester zombies, always kinda told me that she had a thing for Shaun. But she doesn't wish Liz was dead, either, so she's just a genuinely good person.

in the begining when Ed and Shaun are in the pub, Ed spoils the majority of the movies plot with his description of how the day will go.
"we'll have a Bloody Mary first thing" - The zombie in the garden is named Mary, and she's bloody.
"have a bite at the king's head" - Shauns stepdad gets bit in the neck
"couple at the little princess" - They go to pick up Shauns girlfriend (the princess) and the other guy and girl are also there (the couple)
"we'll stagger back here" - In order to get to the pub, they have to pretend to be zombies (staggering back to the pub)
"BANG! back at the bar for shots" - They use the rifle above the bar to shoot the zombies

One of the interesting things about the zombies in this movie is you do see some of them retain their baser personality traits. The neat one was zombie Barbara being completely passive until David yelled at Shaun

  • @SuperTyrannical1

"I'm fine!.. I ran it under a cold tap." This humour is very British. It's the stiff upper lip thing. But also some British homes are old and back in the day we used to have immersion heaters instead of boilers, and so the way it was plumbed meant that the hot water was stored stagnant water, so you would use the cold tap because it was plumbed into the mains which was treated and filtered meaning it was more sterile. But older people would always say just run it under a cold tap for pretty much any wound back in the day. It's also the reason some homes still have the separate hot and cold taps till this day even though they have probably had boilers installed.

She managed to get away from the crowd of zombies and climbed up a tree, where she was able to stay safe until she was rescued by the army. This was revealed in a special feature on the DVD release. There was another one that explained what Shaun did after he lured the zombies away from everyone at the front door of the pub - basically, he had to keep stopping to let them catch up so he didn't lose them completely, then he hid in a dumpster until they dispersed and he could make his way back to the pub.

To get munted pretty much means to get wasted. Another they say is to get mortal. Which means to get so wasted that you're on the edge of death.

Always fascinating to see Americans reactions to British humour, the nuances and levels ours work on are totally different to American straight down the line humour. The Cornetto Trilogy is brilliant and look forward to seeing the next two especially the Worlds End which is the best of the three for me.

I agree with jen about the humor. This movie never made me really laugh, but it was mildly funny throughout, and the charm of the characters, light comedy, and genuinely tense and dramatic moments make it one of my favorite zombie movies.

11:50 that is a reference to the original night of the living dead, one of the characters teases the main girl by trying to scare her ‘there coming to get you, barbara’ 😂

As a brit, the thing with british humour (when done well) is that it's equal parts smart and silly. This movie is filled with really silly jokes, bits of slapstick and just a general daft tone; but it has just as many really clever lines of dialogue, whip-crack bits of editing/visual humour or poetic dialogue/scenes that get revisited and recontextualised later in the film ("you've got red on you" & "I'm sorry Shaun"). I think it's really easy for people who aren't used to this kind of comedy to either miss the jokes because they come and go so fast, are delivered in a very dry/sarcastic manner or they simply aren't sure when the film is making a joke vs trying to be serious.

This is my favorite movie of the trilogy, maybe because when I first saw this, it was something I had never really seen before. Several scenes made me pause from laughing so hard, especially the beginning of the zombie invasion, when they are so oblivious. I still can't hear the name "Pete" without thinking about them at the bottom of the stairs, calling his name, and I just crack up in my head.

I often wonder if the “winding the camera” gag after the zed-girl stands up falls short for recent generation viewers. Sometimes I even wonder if they even know what a camera NOT attached to their phone even looks like . . . l’ve even seen Gen Z reactors look puzzled when seeing a rotary phone, so . . .?

Diana didn't die going into the horde after David, she fought back using Davids leg, climbed a tree and passed out, she remained up there for 3 days climbed back down after seeing the zombies gone, she now lives with her mum but remains in "Christmas Card" contact with Shaun and Liz.
