    It can be summed up really as
    1) The typical buyers, Supercars and the like are not generally bought by enthusiasts. Typical buyers are using it as another way to express their wealth and status.
    2) Emissions, its a lot easier for manufacturers to make their cars compliment with emissions regulations than with a manual.
    3) The link to F1, in most consumer minds a flappy paddle gearbox is basically what LH uses.
    4) Standardisation, its more cost effective for car manufacturers to build and design a car with one gearbox inmind. Designing a car for both is a compromise and increases cost
    5) Instant gratification culture. People don't want to master a skill, like blipping or heal and toeing. They want that dopamine hit now.
    That's my thoughts on it anyway, which is sad as a great manual gearbox is a thing of wonder and very rewarding

    The best takeaway from the Austrian GP was actually how 1) How Lando dealt with his DNF
    2) How Lando remained calm and level headed toward Max

    Learning to drive in a manual is still 100% worthwhile. Firstly, it teaches you mechanical sympathy and why you can't go round slow right angle corners in 4th, for example. It also teaches you how to recognise when your auto is picking the wrong gear for an upcoming situation, and when you might want to manually override it. Additionally, you never know when you might be presented with a manual car with no alternative, such as if you hire a car in some foreign country.

    Hi All, glad to have Pete & the Mid Week 180 back!! Thanks for the Anniversary shout out too! Looks like you had fun though Pete 😉look forward to the next garage update! Max was definitely in the wrong in Austria, simply too aggressive in his defending so it was only ever gonna end up as an accident, someone could have been injured, it's a shame he managed to carry on & still get points when poor Lando, who'd driven brilliantly, got nothing ... How is that fair?
    I have no choice but to drive an Auto after a motorbike accident left me as an amputee but I would love a manual if I could, however the choice of autos in recent years has improved so much that the manual is slowly becoming extinct 😟

    Manuals are for enthusiasts. Most people are just drivers not enthusiasts hence the low sales. As for a long road trip - enthusiastic driving is not supposed to be easy - it’s a lot more rewarding to get back knackered at the end of the day - makes the post drive beer so much nicer :)
    We all know autos are ultimately faster but if I wanted fast and easy I’d take the EV rather than the V8 manual

    From one Masters Distinction to another happy Wednesday. I am currently teaching my 17 yr old to drive (in a manual car). Autos within his price range were just not ideal. I must say teaching my son in a manual as an IAM Observer, has been interesting, and i've enjoyed driving a manual again. There is still too many manual cars out there for young ones to dismiss them yet.

  • @cartherapy718
    @cartherapy718 Před 2 měsíci +2

    Pete, it’s really interesting about the manual option on cars. I’ve been toying with the idea of changing my 718 Spyder manual to a PDK which is slightly quicker and has some advantages over the manual. However that manual gearbox is really good and in an age where manual is dying, is the manual actually the right choice for that car? Day to day car, definitely auto, but in a weekend/sports car, the extra engagements of a manual makes a strong case to keeping it! I guess it’s where someone will use the car, how much they like the fun of having to engage more with the car, ease of driving?

      Go with public transportation or a bike/scooter/motorcyle and have a proper car for weekends and trips; like I have said above, ppl who just pretend they are real drivers, will always find excuses for that ease of use, easy driving because, yeah, why learn how to coordinate your hands, feet, eyes and thought when you can put the car in D and don't bother with the driving at all.

    Hello Peter. welcome back MW180! I had 36 years with manual and a late mix of automatic but DVT in my leg in 2002 stopped that for a while but only because town driving became very difficult with a clutch. I recovered and we had manual in Hilary’s car until last year but automatic has been my norm since 2002 really and I prefer it in most situations. I just don’t like Max Verstappen…he must be outstanding as a driver but I cannot deal with his manner and attitude..

    I'm amazed that even Britain and Europe in general face the question of bothering with manual cars. All my cars were manuals with the exception of a Prius. Only the Americans I knew in Europe had automatics in their vehicles.
    Since I like EVs, I would have to bid a manual car adieu were I to buy a new car today. Unless...I had the dosh to buy one of Richard Morgan's converted classic EVs. I would be satisfied with an old VW Beetle EV...with a manual...in that case.

    Hi Ped
    Having watched last weekend F1, in my humble opinion Max Guilty. Now the competition is closing in he is going back to his old bad ways. Manual v Auto, has to be auto for me. As most of my driving is now road use, including towing, would not consider going back to manual. Even if I could have a spare track day toy, I think I might still go auto. What’s is not to like about a PDK box?

    I had DB9 manual back in 2010. It was a 2007MY and had been maintained by AM Works in Newport Pagnell from new. It had horrible clutch judder and a very weird bite point. Couldn’t sell it for love nor money in 2013 whereas now it’s apparently a unicorn’s back tooth 🤷🏻‍♂️. Replaced it with a Porsche with PDK and what a difference… now have McLaren 570 with lightning quick synchro. They are simply better and quicker 😜 Having said that, I just love the manual in my GR Yaris … 🙃

It doesn’t really matter what the roads are like. It doesn’t really matter whether your car is the weakest in the bunch, you’re driving a Porsche. This is never going to be bad in any circumstance. Max has reverted to type as the pressure mounts, the 10 second penalty is a joke when the next car is 17 seconds behind.
    Andrea Stella is a fantastic guy.
    Lance should go, he always has a face like a wet weekend, he's not enjoying it, he'd rather be playing tennis. Lost any respect for the team and him when he resigned
    My car is an auto, because you can't buy it in manual form. I've loved driving since the day after my 17th birthday when I had my first lesson.
    Move forward 52 years and 9 days and I won't go back, there's always traffic these days, or someone in a Toyota doing 25, no matter what the limit is and to be honest I'm not enjoying a drive as much as I used to, so driving an auto suits me now, its less stressful and more relaxing.
    Looking forward to the Milano, whoops, Junior review

    My wife and I have two cars with manual transmission. Likely, these will be the last two. Reason?? As we get older, it is harder to work the clutch, comfortably. Also, modern automatics are very good. No longer is driving an automatic a deterrent to fun. The clutch is a maintenance and service issue. It is a friction device which does wear out, over time, and has become bloody expensive to replace. An automatic is covered by the new car warranty. These are the kinds of things that reduce the demand for manuals to near zero, even in cars that you expect to have a manual transmission.

    On manuals vs auto issue, it won't be many years before driving instructors can't easily buy new manual cars to teach with.
    At that point the 17 year olds won't even have the option to learn manual - meaning there are many cars that will become worthless to them.
    So if you don't have a manual licence there's an argument to learn sooner rather than later, in case you discover in 10 years' time that you really want to drive a manual car but can't easily learn any more.

    • @eugenux
      @eugenux Před 2 měsíci

      I understand your point but I don't agree with it for the following reason:
      if you drive a 250hp car at 6-7 tenths, yes, a manual is more involving then an 500hp automatic at the same speed and yes, as the rithm gets higher, of course it will take more skill and concentration to drive a 500 hp car at 8-9 or 10 tenths, than you will need in a 250hp car, as the actual speed and progression on the road is higher at a higher pace.
      BUT, and there is a big but here, if both cars are manual, the less skilled guy(or gal) in the 500hp car will always be the slowest on the road, while the skilled guy in the 250hp car will be best or only second best, giving in only to the skilled guy in a 500hp car(because it has also power, no only skills);
      what I am trying to say(without succeeding at it very much) is that manuals are the greatest equalisers on the road, while also being the safest option out there!, way to many ppl with limited knowledge and or skills are driving, fast most of the time, cars that have way more power than they can actually handle. Such a person in an 800hp manual ferrari wouldn't go much faster than a similar person in a gr86; a great and skilled driver in the same '86 would run rings around the slow guys, regardless of how much power their sports car would have; having automatics in their sports and super cars, allows ppl with mediocre driving skill sets to drive faster and for a longer time, putting themselves in danger and also other road participants as well;
      so, yeah, indeed, letting an automatic shift itself(or flapping a paddle-more usually than not, even the sports cars are left in D)-, means more rapid pace in a 500+ hp...but, honestly, I don't think ppl who can't actually drive, should be allowed to be at the wheel of such fast vehicles; if we would have only manual in sports and super cars, the number of mediocre drivers behind their wheels would be much much lower...and that is(and would be) a very good thing.

The manual is for a blast on a b road but with the state of the roads it’s not that enjoyable anymore sadly😢

    In 45 years of driving I have never owned an automatic gearbox car, don’t think I want to start now. If you had the least amount of fun then I think I need to unsubscribe!!! I am at our place in the 3 Vallées as I have quit working on the private yacht and am having some well earned time off. Look forward to hearing what you are up to as if I come back to the UK we might be able to meet up for a drink.

    Max at fault without question. Plus, when is a penalty going to be a penalty. A 10 second penalty when you are 15 seconds ahead is not a penalty. And finally, manual gearbox all the way. I cannot believe that Mini say there is no demand for manual. That sound like an excuse rather than a reason. So its petrol manual for me.

    Never bought an automatic in my life, driven a lot mostly BMW and Mercedes they never get the changes quite right, driven a few CVTs they always seem to be hunting for the right gear. I might have to have one eventually but I would rather not.

    I'll always stick (slight pun intended) to manuals. Have driven (flappy paddle) auto's but gear changing without engaging a clutch feels so utterly pointless to me. It's just like a computer game, so boring.

FAB road trip vid and the Pau circuit looks incredible so will try and get there when we're in the Pyrenees for 3 weeks in September. Calle de Tosse is already on our list. Looking forward to watching your GT Tours "underdog" video as I'll be in my Boxster T PDK and my mate will be in his Lotus Emira manual. I'm aiming not to have the least amount of fun! 😂

    Had auto boxes on the Honda and Chevy sedan because they are not sporty or off-roady. Manuals are there because you have to choose what gear to use not made by a magic brain. On bikes we have a name for them. Mopeds.

    Good Morning, and please excuse my off-topic post. May I suggest a video with your take on driving a car fitted with Intelligent Speed Assist (which I understand the UK will also be implementing from 7 July)? Within 500 yards of my house the speed limit starts at 20 mph, then goes to 30 mph, then back to 20 mph, then up to 60 mph. The prospect of this idiocy reducing power with constant warning bongs if I have the temerity to exceed any of these limits four times in a few minutes is ludicrous. I shall now stick to second hand cars.

    Looking at the manual vs auto question objectively the people who want a manual have to like driving. Talking to my friends and relatives they see cars as a tool to go from A to B, needs to look good , comfortable, safe and be at a sensible price point so don’t really care about the manual gearbox , want to go from a to b as easily as possible. I had a quick google and 40% of people like driving) so in theory if you said 50% of those people want a manual that’s 20% of sales MIGHT buy a manual . So Mini are right as 80% of people will get an auto. I feel as an everyday car I would have an auto as most of the time I fall into the A to B category like going to the supermarket or driving to the station and occasionally I want a proper drive (don’t get much time for this so maybe 2-3 times a month) bit of a long answer and the numbers are very very approximate.

    Max gets threatened when challenged and reacts accordingly, just as he did when Sir Lewis got fed up of his antics. Red Bull blindness is quite common evidently! Problem with the demise of manual is the push for EV which are mainly auto / semi auto. Manual is far better, more involving,more economical ( using a lighter foot) ,around better!! Have a great Grand Prix

    Why aren't we buying manuals?
    1. If I'm being honest, for daily purposes the auto 'box is so much more convenient. And with automatic gearbox being more and more reliable these days, can't see any reason why would I buy manuals for day-to-day basis.
    2. Meanwhile, manuals for enthusiast cars are now restricted to cars like MX-5 and GR86 (which many so-called 'enthusiasts' complained are not powerful enough), hot hatches like GR Yaris (which some so-called 'enthusiasts' complained are not analogue enough), or expensive things like 992 ST, Sport Classic, Aston Valour and the likes. So when we got cheap manual sportscars we complained because it was not powerful enough, and when they put it on expensive car we complained manufacturers only cares about money (which is true).
    3. Prices of cars (and everything in general) has been going off-the-scale these days. When even public transports are being priced beyond belief to a point where putting a plate of meal everyday became a hassle, buying cars (let alone manual cars) isn't perhaps something that comes to the mind of public when they have to spend money.
    Contrary with so-called 'enthusiasts', I appreciate all kinds of cars (except Teslas because of Elongated Muskrat). I love great manual gearbox as much as I do with excellent torque-converter automatics or DCTs.

    Totally agree, Max needs to have some proper punishment dished out, he’s getting away with it because of who he is. Anthony Davidson on sky summed it up with his review and there is no way he left a cars gap. It’s spoiling the sport for me because of the inconsistency of the punishment ie lando didn’t score a point because of Max! If this was the other way round red bull would be calling for blood. Great news for Mercedes though and good to see that the red bull dominance is finally coming to an end.

    The first Auto box I drove was a Borg Warner 3-speed in a Jaguar Mk2. Utter rubbish, The next was a variomatic in a DAF 44. 850cc engine but it left similar cars standing and was so very easy to drive. A short high speed drive across Salisbury Plain in a Morris Marina Auto was horrible. I brought and drove manual cars for years, both Diesel and Petrol , at work I drove some rather speedy cars and bikes at their maximum performance levels.
    Then I went EV, and will never go back . Complete control of power to the wheels at all times , cracking acceleration, great braking control and NO horrible noises or smells.

      @@dimsoneill A couple of years ago a neighbour had a new Aston Martin , presumably with a 'sports' exhaust. When he started it in the morning we could hear it indoors, even with the double glazed windows closed. Why should I have to hear it? Other Aston Martin cars seem not to make that noise, does that mean the driver has a reduced 'emotion' from their car? When I drive my EV I can speak at a normal voice with my passengers, no need to raise it. I can listen to music at a low volume .
      The reason that car noises are associated with power is simply historical, Early car exhausts were inefficient , and caused a drop off in performance. Nowadays it is possible to make a quiet car exhaust. It is also possible to make the car interior quiet.
      Don't be taken in by last century marketing, drive something that is up to date.

    When Lando passed him on the first attempt he out braked himself and correctly gave the place back, on the second attempt he passed him fair and square, did max give the place back after passing off track no he did not.

    For sure Max was in the wrong and his punishment was not enough it should have been a 10 second stop and go penalty. With regards Manual cars I do like a manual but only for fun driving. Last week I was travelling down the M25 from Glasgow in Rush Hour and it was hellish and thankfully I was in a brand new Range Rover with an automatic box but next week I will going back to London near Heathrow, in a Manual and I will be making sure I will arrive outside those times. A week of dog sitting for my sister while she is in Italy hopefully it will be warmer & sunnier than here in Scotland and I can top up my tan. Quick question how many 17 year old's who pass their test will be buying electric cars in my experience most buy 10 year old Corsa's or Fiesta's with a manual box ?.

    because, secretly, most of so called drivers are imposters, pretenders.
    Most just want to pretend that they are some sporty drivers with a passion for cars and for the driving itself but, in reality, they simply want comfort and ease of use...which is mind boggling considering you buy a sports car for the experience, not for ease of usage; having an automatic, regardless of the type is so much detrimental to the spirit of driving and actual enjoyment behind the wheel but, ppl who have the necessary money for these cars, brand new, simply decide the compromise is ok; considering the actual age of said first buyers, I can almost understand them; and that is happening because they are more interested in the image the said sports car and sports cars brand projects on them, then the actual experience of driving.
    And now, after I stated my opinion, let's see what's your opinion! 😁😁, "Siri, play the video!"

    Manual Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s are now rare, so their values are higher than Auto’s. Year’s ago Auto’s were slow, but now they are in some cases faster than Manual’s. The trouble is that in today’s traffic an auto is so much easier. Also with today’s younger generation buying cars with no enthusiasm for driving, as they consider a car as just another consumable item like a fridge with no pride of ownership, paid for on an expensive PCP. It therefore makes no sense for an SUV brick to be manual gears. Every time I see a learner car in my road, it is automatic.
