  • In Part 1 of our interview, Kwame visits #TheSorenBakerShow to discuss why he became a rapper-producer, why he didn't write X-rated raps, getting a contract from Sylvia Robinson from Sugar Hill Records & why Hurby "Luv Bug" said Rakim & Big Daddy Kane wouldn't make it. Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

Great interview. This is my era of rap ...Kane, Kwame, Special Ed, Stezo, Biz Markie, Heavy D, Kid and Play, Mc Lyte, etc. Man...such great memories. A fun time being a young teenager. I miss those days.

Ironically, though Hurby was tellin Kwame that lyrical rappers wont go anywhere due to the hardcore stance and lyrical complexity, those same rappers (ie Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, G Rap) are legends. Kwame is a legend and an icon to me though he's not at all considered in the ranks of the Golden Era rappers. He proved you can be your own man and bring something to the table.

@ 44:34 Meanwhile when people talk about the legends of Hip Hop, the names of Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and Rakim are mentioned but basically no one mentions Kwame. He was good doing his very short run but he is pretty much a trivia question in Hip Hop history. Hurby " Luv Bug" was WRONG! What worked for female Mc's ( Salt and Pepa ) wouldn't work for men. Matter of fact most never mention Hurby as a legendary producer and dude did have a big impact during his era. Powerful lyricist stand the test of time, it's the simplistic bubble gum BS that doesn't last . Ironically enough, Kwame was a good lyricist with a slick delivery. He just came out in an era of Hip Hop giants.

      At the same time
People (we, us, me, you, them) use the term Legend too losely imo. Kwame wasnt a "Legend". He was just one of many talented people who was just that much more talanted than the rest...worked that much harder than the rest...stayed that musch more determined than the rest, and as a result👉 "made it". After which, fame was a result of it.... Yet, everyone has a back story but it doesnt always have to be "LEGENG-ary" as people are making it out to be...just because you are dis-covering their becomings. Feel Me?

LONNIE HALL Money? What does that have to do with being known for their talent and image? Are you crazy or the type to push the sell-out, pop, weak, sugar coated, mediocre, bubble gum irrelevant crossover rap music? Hurby had to clear all those samples used bacc then and he's not getting any checcs now from those songs. If anything, those royalties are going to the original copyright and Publishing owners. Kane and Rakim still receive royalties for their publishing as writers for songs and videos that are still playing to this day. Is Hurby touring and getting money? Is he recognized in public and getting kiccbaccs? Hurby was a biter anyways. Trying to sound like Hitman Howie Tee

When I try to put myself in the frame of mind that Herbie had to have back then I think maybe he was thinking that hardcore bulshit don't nobody want to get jiggy with that they need this happy Snappy popshit I make that other s*** too hard...... that's the only thing he could have been thinking, in my opinion.

Damn, I remember WKTU with Paco. And the best rock station in New York was WPLG. Then there was WSOU pirate radio at Seaton Hall University and WBLI in Long Island. SOU would play underground metal during the day, avanti gard jazz fusion in the evening then hip hop late at night and BLI would play hip hop at night. Listening to those stations was like going music school. You learned who and what was important and the history behind what you were listening to. Especially when the show Liner Notes would come on SOU. They talked about all kinds of obscure facts on how different songs were created, how the engineer came up with certain recording, what the producer was think when he was asked to producer the recording, who created what, who arranged what, how bands got together. Man, things were really different back then. I even remember the music building out in Queens.

Dope interview..I liked how he explained everything in detail.... I was only 9 when his 1st album came out but I always thought he was from Philly and I told him thru social media after finding out he was a Queens native and I know I wasn't the only one who thought that...It must've been the Tat Money affiliation I said.

Somewhere out there is a picture of me and Kwame... I'm at a black expo watching something and a flash goes off... I look over and this chick with a camera is smiling. I'm like why did she just take my picture? She must think I'm Al B Sure. She comes up and ask the guy standing next to me for his autograph. I look at him and I'm like who the hell is this guy? Turned out to be Kwame. Loved his music once I heard it.
