    My rule of thumbs when buying a sportcar(especially a turbo car) get one as close to unmodded as possible. Been lurking for my second Speed3 and finally found 1 that is unmolested :D

      @@xaviermarquez1045 I've owned a P5 non-turbo for about 6 years now and I love it. I swapped out the FS-DE engine to the FS-ZE without any other mods or tunes and it runs great with a bit more bite. I was fortunate to be able to drive a lot of cars daily for one of my jobs, so I was able to test drive a crap ton of cars and I can say the Mazdaspeed 3's have a lot more bite stock than the Protege 5, for sure. However, handling is very similar if the suspension is in good condition. I was never able to get behind a Mazdaspeed Protege, so I can't speak for those. Hope this helps with your question.

    Few more things to add:
    Check VVT chain (Will hit timing cover on cold start)
    ALWAYS do a compression test on the engine no matter what before buying

    Thank you for this helpful, well-made video. Clear and concise. I have a 2007 MS3 sitting in my garage that I’ve not yet completed the purchase. It was traded in at a local dealer. 123k miles. They have no idea what all it has in mods. I can easily spot the following: Cobb everywhere. Cobb front mount intercooler. Cobb blowoff valve. Full Cobb exhaust. Cobb springs. Koni shocks. Hotchkiss swaybars. Cobb shifter. No Cobb accessport to be found. Runs fantastic. I’ve driven 40 miles already on various tests before I agreed to borrow for the evening and return to make a deal. They had it listed for 9k but have “settled” at 6500. Carfax is clean. Initial assessment is it needs a new battery box (broken clips), second key, and paint buffing to reduce swirl marks. Two very minor dings. Few front bumper area scuffs. Bright red paint. Sport (non grand touring) model. I had a 2009 MS3 purchased new then sold in 2012 after 46k trouble-free meticulously maintained miles; bone stock, and have missed it ever since. My plan is to get a full PPI from my independent shop tomorrow before making a deal but they won’t budge from 6500. What’s your in-take (sic)?

  • @campbelltheginga
    @campbelltheginga Před 5 lety

    Your wrong about the accessport, once you have sold the accessport, you cannot (or should not) keep the tune that's installed on the ECU, it has to be unpaired. 2nd, there are many other tuning solutions such as versatuner, mazdaedit, ecutek etc. 3rd, the main thing to really look for is the service history, the Timing chains particularly on the Gen1's can stretch and the VVT actuator is usually worth doing. What's the service history too? Mine's been changed every 5000km since 60000km, it's now done 200000km and I've only replaced the turbo seals and injector seals.
    Also, the Gen2's ABS motor have been known to burn the brushes. Would check to see if they have been done.

    Hey Cameron! Just subscribed to your channel. I have been looking at a 2013 MS3 for a couple of days being sold by a White Allen dealership. The car has 32,000 miles and appears to be in absolutely pristine condition from only been able to look through the windows to the interior, and observing the exterior. The only thing that is concerning to me about the car is that I looked through the hood scoop and saw an aftermarket intercooler. I also looked through the back window and saw a custom performance engineering box in the trunk. I also saw another box labeled stock airbox. Taking all of that into consideration, do you think you would be safe to proceed with? Tomorrow I will be contacting the dealer to send me pictures of the engine bay to see if anything else has been touched. I also asked them for the previous owner’s contact information. Am I doing everything right so far? If not, what else do you think I should look out for?

    Cool vid. You should get rid of those JBR mounts, though. They're crap and I've seen them fail more than once. The geometry on the PMM isn't even correct for the loads to be properly distributed on the bushing; it's on entirely the wrong axis. I've been fully mounted with Damond Motorsports mounts on my bolted/tuned/BNR S3'd (390/385 @ wheels) Speed 3 for a long time, and they've never given me problems. They are just as solid as the JBR mounts, have less NVH, and have no record of catastrophic failure like the JBR ones do.
    One guy I know had his JBR TMM fail and his entire drivetrain dropped while he was on the highway. Scary stuff.

  • @Texas_Cruiser
    @Texas_Cruiser Před 4 lety

    Great vid man very informative. All the comments are about buying a stock car or never modded, etc. And that's sad. It's sad a car just can't even have an intake and exhaust without all these supposed problems. And it doesn't look like it's blown out of proportion here either. Did Mazda not anticipate the after market for this car? I'm an older guy and had a 93 RX-97 back in the 90s. The car was a great performer for the times but the build quality was shit...things always broke...had to replace vacuum lines, radiator, engine could crap out, interior pieces, etc. Interior isn't a big deal, I grew up with GM cars, but for the engines to have as many problems as they did even stock. Since that car I was never into any Mazdas...well they didn't really make anything performance oriented again until the 3. And here I am reading about similar things. It's like Mazda built another piece of shit it seems like. Again shouldn't be this big of a deal to have a car with some mods...unless a lot of you folks are being paranoid. I had a 300ZX and a Supra as well...no problems with those really...bulletproof engines for the most part. Mazda let me down again...unless what I'm reading here is a load of crap.

    I should've just looked for a Speed3 when I went shopping for my "first" car, but wasn't thinking about it at the time before just buying a basic 2014 Mazda3 (still love it, but I craved for a Manual car to modify). My cousin might be selling his Speed3, so I definitely need to get in touch on what I need to know about the car. Thankfully, I feel like he's one to have taken care of his car.......hopefully, lol.
    Thanks!

    I’m looking at a Speed3 right now. It has a short ram and a bypass valve. Doesn’t have an Accessport and seems to drive really well. It has 80k miles. What do I need to look for? It’s a dealer so idk if they will know if there was an Accessport or not.

    As someone newer to driving a manual transmission is the torque steer that is prominent in the Mazdaspeed 3 something that would be problematic for me starting out?

    • @CodyKloepfer
      @CodyKloepfer Před 7 lety +2

      Z_Biglane Torque steer is definitely intense, but it's nothing to worry about. I've found it fun to play around with over the time I've owned my 2010 Mazdaspeed 3.

    • @CameronAlford
      @CameronAlford  Před 7 lety +9

      Not at all! If you drive like a normal person abiding by the laws you wont feel it. But you'll get use to it when you run it hard.

    • @nickgiarraputo9568
      @nickgiarraputo9568 Před 6 lety +1

      Torque steer is mostly prominent at full throttle. You just have to ease off the gas a little when it occurs and as always, grip the wheel with both hands. It's *much* less scary to deal with as a first-timer than oversteer. Don't let it deter you from buying a car.

Cause I've changed the tranny fluid,shifter bushings, intake hose, and oil other than that I just feel like with an aftermarket rear sway bar the p.o might have done other mods just taken most of them off to part out for extra cash

    Bruh. If you "care" for your car so much just leave it in a storage facility. I have daily driven my Gen 1 speed for 5 years. I like it soo much i have replaced piston rings, timing chains, turbos, and various other parts to keep it ripping. I dont park far away in lots, i dont worry about door dings, I scrape curbs when doing U-Turns on neighborhood streets, I take it through small river crossings when camping, and its got some hail damage. I wouldnt trade for your speed if you paid me. Mine has character and has been through hell and back, ripping as good as ever. Have fun in the car, dont just baby the thing everywhere. I feel bad for your car.
