I really really appreciate this series.
Hang in there Heart Machine, we believe in you!!
AAA games have gone to shit with the shareholders and absurd CEOs, indies are now the true lifeblood of gaming
Indies will be compromised eventually as well. They still need to deal with these shady companies to get their game on the major gaming platforms as that's where the majority of users are.
@billy5688 I love the overlap in both categories. for some reason one of the largest AAA studios, Rockstar, seems to continue to maintain the highest standards of artistic expression and integrity and are truly the exception to the rule, creating works of art at blockbuster prices.
on the other end you have independent devs like Lucas Pope who will never be bought out by larger companies and will never compromise on their vision for a weird, esoteric gaming experience
@@TMV420Rockstar isn't a golden child. Do not forget the incredible crunch the developers were subjected to in order to release RDR2.
@@NeptuneSega
There will always be smaller teams of creators making wonderful things, you will just have to look.
Big companies plaster their products everywhere people look, it takes no effort to see them... actually some to look away.
Indies are never measured by failure, because the vast majority of indie games go lost and unplayed. It’s easy when they’re only measured by success.
continuing my unbroken streak of appearing in these episodes with my back turned while eating lunch
Good luck out there! I'm pulling for you guys.
Beloved character actor FreedomBeaver as:
Guy Eating Lunch in the Background
Requesting a time stamp plz haha
Beavers be beavering.
heart machine's dedication to their vision is such a beacon of hope in an industry that's being ground to dust by shareholders and executives. so grateful for their games and the esoteric vision they bring to life.
21:35 - I kinda love how that shot looks like "concept art of a future with reflective buildings and electric cars and artsy stuff in the middle". - The year 2000 is finally here. XD
This dude's hairstyle has been through just as much changes as the game industry. 😂
Looking forward to the game!
14:17 Len at the party: here, have some fake drama for your doc! :P
Embracer: Oh, shit, you need drama for your doc!? Hold up
Thank you for covering this beautiful dev team and their struggles, as well as their victories. It has been a fascinating journey. I wish them the best, and I will be buying this as soon as it goes early access.
14:06, 14:28 - It's not everyday you get to meet the creators behind your favorite video games :’)
Meeting Alx and his wonderful team folks of the past & present, checking out the HM office, and celebrating 10 years of HM was truly one of the best moments of my life 💙
And as someone who got to play that build at GDC, your work really shines! Well done!
Thank you for giving us an honest look at what game development is actually like
Kudos Heart Machine, Kudos Noclip
Keep up the great work, you're awesome.
Yeah, too many suits in the industry looking for quick buck. When I started working on games I made a decision to never join a "AAA" studio, but now I think I'm ready to expand that to never joining a publicly traded company.
I can't wait to play the early access version, the game looks so good and interresting!
Delay it as long as you need to, you guys are making amazing work!
Just finished watcing. Is tihs the most San Fran team ever created? Like, the last shots just nailed it. Intense SF.
The best part of the video is that guy's coffee cup.
17:29
I'm so emotionally invested in this studio now through these episodes. Can't wait to buy into early access bc at the moment all I can do to support them is have it on my wishlist. Hang in there Heart! Really rooting for your team
christ so this is whats been going on with this game. I hope they make it through.
Over the past couple of months I've attended a few of their game nights so this is a bit surreal. Alx is such a chill dude and it's so obvious how much passion this team has for what they do. Had no idea they were caught up in all of this Embracer buyout craziness. Seriously makes me worry a bit. I'm hoping everything just turns out okay for everyone.
Hyper Light Drifter was such an eye-opener for me. I got it when I got my first ever gaming-console: the Nintendo Switch. After I beat if (multiple times, mind you), Heart Machine left me with a nigh-insatiable thirst for MOAAARRRRR. That's when I found out they also came out with another, much different game: Solar Ash. Took me a few years, but once I managed to acquire a PC, I bought that game lightning-fast. I love to play and stream it whenever I get the chance. Now, I watching a Hyper Light Breaker video make me feel chills and jitters that I once remember from my first Drifter run. Thanks to Heart Machine for working on such an awesome game, and a big thanks to Noclips for giving it a whole 30 minute documentary. Keep up the good work, both of you!!!
Oh man, count me in for that early access release. I love the vibe of Hyper Light Drifter and the game feel of Solar Ash, if this combines the two successfully it's a winner in my book.
Always great getting caught up on Heart Machine ❤️
It's amazing how loving your documentary camera is, the way you can make me fall in love with a group of devs.
loving this series so much. I remember watching that old documentary about Hyper Light Drifter's development. It's one of the things that got me into game dev (and here I am now a full time indie dev!)
Thanks for sharing us this amazing story. Really looking forward to the next episode!
I'm so insanely hyped for this game! Thank you for creating these insights and giving us updates on the game.
On a side note: I just love the music of this game, are you planning on having a deep dive into that part of the game?
I've had this game in my wishlist since Feb 2023. I keep checking in to see when early access will hit. Really excited to play this one and hope the team finds a ton of success!
And now, Embracer is one of the most hated company in America.
Happy to see a new episode of this series. All so looking forward to trying this game.
Heart Machine , im looking forward to Hyper Light Breaker so very much. well made video as always noclip. keep kicking ass
Possibly my most anticipated game right now is this. I absolutely love his passion.
As always excellent work by the NoClip crew, and much love to the Heart Machine folks for opening their doors and letting all of us outsiders see a bit more about how the games we love actually get magicked into the world.
Weather the storm! Looking forward to trying this one out and wishing the best to the devs!
So glad to see this video pop up! (: Hope and good luck to Heart Machine, and great work Noclip team!
Great as always
The more I see of this game the more I want to play it. A great documentary series and best of luck to the devs!
I played that build at GDC which was really cool. Keep it up guys and gals!
Can't wait for this to come out on steam so I can play :) game looks great and congratulations to the team for weathering such a hard time in the games industry!
i loved Hpyer Light Drifter
Breaker looks very different
I am really looking forward to jumping in at early access.
I do like how this looks like a mix of elements from Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash. But I really wish we could get a true sequel to hyper light drifter.
Small dogs teleport, confirmed: 14:57
Bend Studio Documentary when?
I have had this game on the steam wishlist for months. I am looking forward to the early access release.
I'm so so so excited for this game. But I'm also attached to the studio and want them to do well and be healthy independently of the game and its development. One of the studios that genuinely have creative and forward thinking vision. Amazing.
I love these episodes, and I can't wait to play this game, such a fan of HLD
I really hope they have a character customization, at least like a different type of cape
gearbox and perfect world. theres two companies that can piss off
The absolute state of modern game industry... I hope these guys come out the other side
I would love it if Noclip did a deep dive video on the current awful state of AAA games and how the industry has sunk to the level it’s currently at.
Great work by the studio. I've been super hyped for this game since it was announced
18:02 Final Fantasy Tactics OST on Spotify ❤
thought i was the only one who noticed
My Spotify is mostly just 5 albums on repeat. FF6, FF7, FFTactics, Secret of Mana and Tron Legacy.
People making fun games that they’d want to play. What a novel idea for a business.
i hope they do good!!!
I am eager to play this game. I really enjoyed HLD.
Man I feel bad for them, big fan of hyper light drifter
I really Wang does Heart Machine branded hoodies 😂
...hold up. Did they scrap the dragon-man and robot characters?
Can't wait till I can get my hands on the game, something between solar ash and hyperlight drifter that's also a rougelite is gonna be amazing. Anyone know if there's any puzzle elements planned for the game?
Pretty sure that they said not all beacons will be combat-oriented, which is something i have no clue how they are going to pull off, but can't wait to see.
The game looks really good. I hope it runs on low end systems.
so excited for this game, all the best to the team!
I'm so invested in the game and fond of the team now.
baldurs gate 3 needs the noclip treatment guys! I really wanna see a documentary by you explaining all that shit
I would love to play the early access but I'm pretty sure it won't work on my old computer. I'll be playing it on ps5. I loved hyper light drifter. Solar ash had problems but it when it worked it was brilliant. So I will definitely play it.
I hope Early Access happens soon with their finally being a bit of a lull in the absolute insane releases we've been getting lately. Early June would likely be their best bet before Elden Ring DLC and the newest FFXIV expansion gobble up so many players time.
I am all in for this early access, I agree with early June there because omg late June is so pack SMTV, Elden Ring and Dawntrail will consume everything I have time wise, maybe July will work better?
Excited for the game!
im not sure if you would be willing to divulge this information, but are you guys working on any more in-depth development documentaries other than this one? Its kind of a shame that you guys dont have more of the development documentaries vs just the post-mortem style ones. (Im just saying this since I think you guys make the best game docs, want more)
We're curerntly working on two other embedded docs we've not talked about. One is an indie game that we're going to produce a "How X works in game development" style series through. The other is an independent AAA game that we're gonna have more embedded stuff in. Quite simply, it's really expensive, and we already do too much for a for a crew of 4 people.
@@NoclipDocs Yeah, I can only imagine. That is fantastic to hear though, I hope all goes well and you guys are able to pull it off. Thank you for replying.
This game is going to be so badass
rly love this series
count on me on that early access!!!
Indie developers and games like this are amazing and impressive
I don't stress on waiting for a game when teams like Heart machine take their time in order to deliver a minimum in their own standards, so I'm more than hyped to hear that the early access is coming soon! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Game looks great! Definitely gonna buy it when released in Early Access, if for no other reason than to make sure awesome games continue to be made. Because, to be honest, my backlog of games is so massive, it would take years to play through it all. Maybe even a decade! With the time I have to play games, that is.
I think that might be part of what the industry is running into. Games are so big, time-consuming, and jam-packed with replay-ability and value that it's hard to "finish" them and move on. I've been playing Destiny for like a decade now! I still dig it! I completely ignore all the layers and layers of currency systems and upgrades, for the most part, but I still enjoy running Strikes.
What a shit-show the Embracer Group has caused.
this is painful to watch (great job)
please let this game land on it's feet, I will get this game day one please please please please
Acquisitions suck and indies usually only go for them just to survive. Whatever happens to the publishing, I hope the best for the Heart Machine team. These documentaries have been wonderful.
I fucking hate the stress these shit big companies but their workers through, especially alx. Like literally he has a heart condition, this stress could kill him. But they don't fucking care, the only wanna see money
I know you've seen the game a trillion times by the time you pitch it, but god damn you could do with a little razzle dazzle in that pitch that he's blasting through.
I think Alx has the coolest head/scalp tattoo I've ever seen. Like, it might be better than having hair. Here's hoping it all comes good for Heart Machine, and that they can find some way out from under the boot of big publishers.
Here I was thinking it was the dumbest thing I'd seen
@@ignotumperignotius630 There's no accounting for taste, I guess
@1:38
> the infamous Embracer Group
this video is leaving things unsaid,
and assuming the viewer has knowledge i do not have
i have never heard of the Embracer Group,
so have no idea why they are infamous,
so am confused in this section of the video
just google it bro. knowledge is free nowadays
crash course. embracer group went on a spending spree to buy up games. game i.p.'s (intellectual properties.) and studios. they were working a side deal with saudi arabia. when the deal went sour, embracer group started to burn everything to save their own asses to cover the debt load they hung on themselves.

Long story short, they adquired a shit ton of studios and years later decided to either close them down like Volition (Saints Row and Red faction fame) or sell them off to other publishers like Gearbox. And don't even get me started on the Timesplitters fiasco.
Hopefully heart machine will make it out of this black hole that Embracer Group have created…
No interview with Wolfgang Traenkle?? Is she still at heart machine? ✌️
Great video, as usual. 👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Have you ever considered making plot analysis for some sagas (Resident Evil, Half Life universe, etc)?
check out noah caldwell gervais if you haven't already, he does great videos on that sort of thing :)
@@praxia1830 I did not, thanks for the heads-up! 💪🏻
Here's my message to Alx: Do not sell your soul to Gearbox. They will demolish any passion and quality that there is.
I'm still kinda mad that risk of rain got sold to gearbox too
@@midosyt Same. Gearbox has proven their ineptitude by not even being able to add a new freaking song to the console version of the game.
Someone show this team: secret of mana 1993.
Noclip, give me a like if you're going to cover silk song development when it finally comes out
We'd love to! Ask them! :D
@@NoclipDocs I was hoping you secretly already were, and was trying to get you to hint at it
The Game is impressive, but am I the only one not jiving with the new character designs? (Specifically the more realistic proportions)
Half the reason I havent published anything yet.
I will only self publish, so, good luck ever seeing one of my projects.
I think we'll be okay lol.
Really disappointed they decided to make in a procedurally generated roguelike instead of a metroidvania-esque action game like the first one. I already loved HLD but to see that world in 3d with improved combat and deeper exploration thanks to added extra dimension would be fantastic.
But they decided to combine the most played out and tired trends of both AAA and Indie games instead lol. I hope that after all the troubled development at least the people who are intereted in this game will be happy with it once it finally comes out.
While I'm very much one of the people intereted to Breaker, I do hope we get a proper Hyper Light Drifter 2 someday
I am all in for breaker but I can’t deny it has more risk of rain 2 to it than drifter on 3D, I am full in for the early access, but I do hope some day we get to see a drifter 2 in a way.
Loved Hyper Light Drifter but I've been unimpressed with the direction they've taken since. Will likely be passing on Hyper Light Breaker.
Uh… the UI looks awful. Kinda like a mobile game (the one with the circular buttons). Hopefully they go back to the old design (15:48).
I like how hard they conform to the hipster dev stereotype.
6:35 and here is the problem folks. Suits who daddy had a big job and paid for their college then got them a job at sports illustrated then got them the job at the game company. That is who is making decisions. Unreal we continue to never learn.
isn't this a sweet baby inc consulted game?
Who cares?
Yes. Some reason they don't want to people know about this.
@@heartsockette I think more people would care if they knew
By care you mean review bomb and harass the devs lol@@Lifesizemortal
gamers don't be unthinking cringing babies challenge
"I want to have dumb hair" the career
So they took a bunch bad decisions and are now in trouble
