  • Day in the life of an internal medicine resident on icu night rotation features Dr. Frederick Acquah discussing a unique case which leads to the broad topic of patient Code Status.
Code Status is a discussion every individual needs to have with him/herself and then with family members as to what kind of limitation you plan to impose on your medical care while admitted to the hospital. Some people will love to undergo resuscitation if there is a cardiac arrest while others would prefer not to go through that. Same way, some may be okay with intubation while others may not.
No matter what decision one makes, the role of every doctor is to respect the decision and do everything in their power to make that feasible.
Discuss Code Status at home with your spouse, kids and friends so when the time comes they know what your wishes are, and not just making things up to suit their own interest.

Make a decision on your code status and make sure you discuss this with your loved ones so they know their limitations to what you want done to you when medically unstable.

Thank you for the feedback. Indeed, this conversation needs to be prioritized, especially in homes with geriatric family members.
