- Twenty-seven years after the Rajiv Gandhi government banned Salman Rushdie's controversial novel The Satanic Verses, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday said it was "wrong."
Chidambaram, who was a Minister of State for Home Affairs under Rajiv Gandhi from 1986-89, also said Indira Gandhi had in 1980 admitted imposing Emergency was a mistake.

When Division was made by jinna, he declared Pakistan Muslim country, rest was Hindustan. Muslims of Hindustan of their own wanted to continue with Hindustan and we're not forced. As such civil code and other laws of Hindustan automatically applies to all who remained here voluntarily. Congress from time to time made laws for different religions separately, which has created confusion in this country. Is there not a civil code in Pakistan (not sure). When Govt. is formed on the basis of majority, then law for majority shall prevail. They can request for privileges but not as a right.
In this current times what is a point in banning a book. Anyone can download the book and read it.
