      They should have went with red and blue light bars from that time to the present time, though. The red and white lights make a lot of New York, Michigan, and New Jersey police cars look too much like fire engine and ambulance units in that regard.

    Nicely done. A couple of typos, but it had a nice flow. Growing up I always wondered why the NYPD needed to order a new fleet since the existing cars looked so nice.

    my mum was an officer with the royal ulster constabulary during the height of the troubles. patrolled the streets to keep us safe. well done mum!

      Hats off to your Mum. I'm retired as a Deputy Sheriff from a department in the Southwest part of the U.S. As a kid during the 70s I remembered watching the news reports from Belfast with IRA attacks. Your Mum survived a tough gig.

      Probably the only police department that uses cars from European Manufacturers such as the Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Toyota RAV4, Mercedes’ Benz Sprinter, and even the Smart is used by New York’s police

    Second season of Car 54 coming out April 2012. To avoid being confused with the real green and white patrol cars of that era, They painted a car red and white as it cruised the streets of the Bronx around Fordham Road and E 177st near the Biograph studio.

    The truck is called an R.E.P, it is a small EMERGENCY SERVICES UNIT (ESU) truck. ESU handles ALL the tactical (swat) work and all the rescue work ie. people trapped in bad car accidents, people trapped under a train, even a person attempting to take his own live by attempting to jump from a bridge or building just to name a few. It is the BEST JOB in the POLICE DEPT. ( I am going to MISS IT!!!!

    I remembered during the early 70s, my mother and I were walking behind a NYPD Officer on Fordham Road in the Bronx. This officer was on foot patrol and was cool, by twirling his baton and was very watchful. The officer was an old school Irish cop and was nice, but you didn't mess with him. If you did you got a tune up. We moved out of the Bronx in 74 to the Southwest and I ended up retiring from law enforcement after 28 years. This officer made a big impression on me.

    I always thought that the term "cops" was actually referring to an acronym called Constable On Patrol, and the "S" were added either by a. denoting multiple constables on patrol, or b. a constable on their patrol routes, or patrols.

    oops I forgot I was supporting him. I am from Canada and we really do not encounter many of his ilk. Most of our black community seem ti integrate into the general population and we usually do not deal with his type that much

    @itsGerbilsworld It was a budget decision: the NYPD found that slapping their logo on an already white car would be cheaper than paying to have them painted blue and logoed just before delivery. There was a report on this in 1996.

    Minor correction. That car that you said was a 1997 was actually a 2007 Crown Vic and Ford did not start using that body style until 1998.

    Good video. The explanations of the terms costumes & "uses", were very nice. Just an adjustment to the letters orthography, will be nicer, but that´s only "peccata minuta". ("A minor sin" in Italian) Hehehe!

    I see the cop haters managed to find this video, I am a retired police officer of 30 years and loved every minute of it . I build models of police cruisers and I have an interest in the vintage units. Thanks for the interesting video. Oh to the cop haters I think I hear your mommy calling you, come on out of your parents basement and learn a little about the real world. Oh and super black man your 15 kids need some support, get offthe computer and find a job so your kids can eat

    OMG! Look at 3:03, that's a 1998-2011 Crown Vic and it's say 1997!
    And I remember they change the color from blue theme white stripes to white theme blue stripes after 9/11 not before.

    Dad used a 1949 Ford vs. unit depicted for 1949. Driving DCIP, they used an upscale Buick like Broderick Crawford used in first year of 'Highway Patrol", then a 1961 6 cyl Plymouth like they used in 'Car 54..." The show was filmed on location, so their cars were maroon so as to not be mistaken for RMPs. We left NYC 1966 and don't know anything afterwards.

    the Crown Vic pictured for 1997 is actually a 2007 Ford Crown Vic which is the first year the Vics used 17" wheels. The Caprice pictured as a 1994 model is actually a 1992 "bubble car" and the bubble style was only used in 1991 and 1992

    “Copper” is an English term and the name did not originate from the badge, it originated long before we discovered the USA and the term copper refers to the first handcuffs issued to officers... surprisingly not they were made from copper and as such coppers

    In case some one else has not informed you, the term COP comes from England where the term derived from police reports using the term C.O.P. for Constable On Patrol.

    Nice fact on the "Copper" and "Cops" term. I think the term "Bronze", or "The Bronze" came from bronze badges as well - just maybe not in the US.

    @CGRSpaz650 your right cop is short for constable on patrol. Coppers is because of the old copper badges and "50" is because before two way radios they were on cb channel 50.

    Actually one popular Car the NYPD used but not featued the above video was the 1980's era Plymouth Gran Fury. It was the backbone of the fleet from 1982 till 1989.

    actually the reason is b/c the NYPD were the first to have a uniformed police force. the buttons on their jackets were made of copper and people called them coppers b/c of this. then it was shortened to cops.
