Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us - great idea to use a ruler! This will really come in handy as whenever a new-to-me book arrives, I clean it up (removing stickers, etc), add it to my database (marking it to be fixed if it needs further repairs) and only then place it in my home library. I have come across books with stuck pages from humidity so this tip is appreciated.
I did this with a piece of strong flat cardboard on a Dreamcast game manual that i thought was beyond saving and it turned out a lot better than expected, the only page i didn't get to seperate cleanly was one i tried to seperate by pulling at it when i first got the game... which only shows that you should try this, you really have nothing to lose, Thank you!
Great advice! And I would recommend a very thin ruler!
Useful info. Thanks!
That is the best researched and nicest book on The Green Man I've ever read! Also, excellent advice!
This is exactly what I have been doing today, with a small, flimsy Wescott 6" ruler. I will sacrifice any tears to keep my book!
Thanks a lot 🙏🏻 it helps me a lot
Thanks ❤, Great advice 👍...way to go Sister...God bless you 🙏....
Never struck my brain to use a ruler! Will definitely have to use in the future 😊
ahh tysmm it helped
Hi Jess. I had a salt lamp on a book shelf, before I knew to put something (eg dish/plate) underneath the lamp because especially when the lamp isn't switched on, the lamp kind of sweats and salt pools and crystallises at its base. Unfortunately several nearby books were affected, with pages wavy, stuck together, and with colour changes. Any tips for rescuing the books from this kind of damage? Love your videos as always.
Well, you can try this method for unsticking the pages and then pressing the books in a press or under a stack of heavy books to try and lessen the wrinkling, but I’m not sure how effective that will be without seeing the books. Worth a try! Definitely move your books away from the lamp from now on.
@@SquirrellyNerdyJess Thank you. Yeah, as soon as I figured out what was going on, I moved the lamp off the bookshelf, plus put a dish beneath it.
What about 2 sheets of paper? How can I separate them? Thank you.
Armature. I got an art book from the 60's where flood damage caused the 2nd half of the book got stuck together in a singe mass. I've been using the freezing and thawing method. After a few days I got 2 pages freed with minimal damage and most of the stuck pages loosened with just my fingers. Shame it had to happen as soon as it got to the Renaissance section.
To be honest, I haven't tried that. I'll give it a try for more thoroughly stuck together books. This was more for a mildly stuck, quick and easy method. Thanks for the tip!
try steam; be patient; be careful; do not use force; a slow tug pulling two pages apart while over a pot of steaming water; stop tugging if encounter any resistance; afterwards press under a stack of heavy books to flatten out any wrinkles.
Thanks for the tips!
I Freaking shredded it 😭
What if is a heavy stock photo book that has gotten wet? Thanks
I’d really have to see it to be sure, but it’s worth a try. Go slowly and gently.
I have a glossy magazine whose pages have got _really_ stuck together.
I'd hoped that immersing it again in luke-warm water and separating the pages while wet (interleaving them with eg freezer paper or similar) might solve it, but I'm still too jittery to try it! 🥴
I know others have tried freezing and thawing multiple times (without first immersing it in water as you suggested). Let me know how it goes!
@@SquirrellyNerdyJess I shall do, and thanks for the freezer tip!
I have a much better technique. You curl the stuck pages over then roll them with your fingers. The tighter the curl the better.
Curl it in different directions too and repeat.
What happens is the inner page moves just a teeny bit slower than the outer page. It creates a tiny bit of motion between the two and often unsticks it.
Ooh thanks for the tip! I’ll have to try it.
How do I remove stickers from the cover of my paperbacks?
Ah, yes I’ve been meaning to do a video on that. Thanks for the reminder!
In short, it’s a modern sticker, I generally use lighter fluid, just a little at a time at the edge to slowly dissolve the adhesive and pull away; it will evaporate so no worries about damaging the book as long as it’s not excessively applied. If it’s an older label and/or lighter fluid doesn’t seem to work, dip the tip of your finger in water and very gently dampen the label until it starts to disintegrate and gently scrape it off with some sort of blunt, flat tool (back edge of a butter knife works).
I had a "MIDGET" dictionary (it was my Grand mothers) .. from BURGESS & BOWES ... the WHOLE book for some reason seems like the pages are stuck together ... I have been using my finger on most , but 2 pages tore :( ... I came looking for an easier way!
Wish me luck
If there are a lot stuck together and they are seeming very fragile, I’d hold off. I’ve had some suggestions for another technique that I’m going to try out in the near future that - if successful - I’ll make a video about.
@SquirrellyNerdyJess, did you ever make the video about that other method? We just bought a book that ended up having some larger portions of pages stuck together.
😢
when i use a ruler it still damages the pages what do i do
It will still leave some slight surface damage, but if it’s too much to your liking, then stop. I’m investigating other methods of page separation.
@@SquirrellyNerdyJess alright
Just tried this suggestion. Had a CD booklet stuck together with some liquid and the pages(4) were fused about midway to the outer edges. I got a pot of water boiling, inserted the ruler and held it over the steam ala marshmallows on a stick over a campfire. The pages would curl upwards after a short time and I had some early success slicing through but once the ruler got to a wavy section it tore through the paper. I feel that this technique can work If the papers are not a large cemented area. Doing this method got an inch separated before it started tearing. Sometimes it just won't come apart, it's welded together and its a wrap. Good luck to all, Hope this helps somebody.
Yeah, unfortunately some damage is beyond help. I’m sorry it didn’t work for you.
There's got to be better process that this...
