Honestly, the best advice I've ever gotten from a filmmaker was from Matt Johnson. When The Dirties came out I was 15, and I actually found the film's website and sent an email to the site saying that I was a young fan and that I really appreciated the DIY aspects of the film and how exciting it was to see a young filmmaker making something delightful. Johnson actually sent me a personal reply telling me to keep going, that I'll be great, not to worry, and he was 15 when he started too. That single two-line email kept me going for years, and I still go back to that when I feel down. So Matt, if you're seeing this, thank you for helping a 15 year old kid keep going. This man is a treat and his films deserve to be watched.
Davey Peppers what’s his email?

Well I mean, he's no Neil Breen...
Matt is so interesting; funny, intelligent and a true heart for independent cinema. Also, a talented actor, you wouldn't have thought he was playing much of a character in The Dirties but it really goes to show in this interview, he's an articulated professional. Pleasure to watch; really good questions, great answers. Looking forward to checking out Operation Avalanche.
I love how Adam is so well researched for these interviews just to attain more info. just shows how he's so good at this
Believing this was a hotel room, I wonder how many looks you got with like three people carrying camera equipment asking for a room. Just curious.
favorite director with my favorite film reviewer?
havent even watched it yet but this is gonna be badass
Yes indeed
yeeh. it sure is
Yep, can't wait to watch it
***** i do watch a lot of films? i just really enjoyed the way the dirties was done and, from what it sounds like, he's going to continue to make more movies in the style of the dirties and i will probably continue to like them
Whats more disingenuous is telling someone that something is not their favorite ting when you don't even know that person...
Did you hire Paul Greengrass's cinematographer to film this interview?
Ben Grieve no, I heard it was the same guy who filmed black widows scenes in Civil War.
I think they where trying to do a Matt Johnson thing
*flips camera sideways*
Ben Grieve Not enough violent camera shakes, and the lens isn't 8 feet long
Adum is so in love with this. You can even see the passion in his dark horse eyes
You kinda look like Lord Farquaad
Please don't hang me if you get this every day
You mean lord fuck wad
the name was already a pun
Pmanbiotches ~Road to 1K Subs!~ I hope he doesn't get eaten by a dragon
+karlore the destroyer
you've destroyed my innocence
I think you should take the ~Road to 1k Subs!~ out of your name. it makes it seem like you only care about the numbers.
It was really cool seeing two guys who seemed to be on the same wavelength. Love for film and all its merits.
That last answer, that was some life changing advice
Kool Kat Appreciates You
I keep seeing you and your ass on the videos I watch.
*( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)*
Linyboo are you a trap
This is the most perfect video to ever exist.
the original Criterion Collection Nirvana the Band the Show the DVDs were hilarious - rated R and produced by SEGA lol. Matt downplays them as amatuer but they were gorrilla style punk comedy gold full of perfect unlicensed music cues and irreverent gags and references. so many extras and easter eggs on it too. The original website was great as well, one link literally just led to the entire "the Edge" movie with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin.
Wow this was a really amazing video
I like it when you do interviews. They're cool because you seem to get along so well with the people you're interviewing. Any opportunity that you can get more interviews please do because they're interesting to watch, and now I'm excited for what this director will bring in the future.
Oh shit, WADUB CUKBOIIIIIIIIIII
Had to do it...
martinjez1 actually, you didn't.
I have a crush on Matt Johnson
Me too
I absolutely loved this video. I liked how prepared you were, the questions were great. And Matt is just amazing
Watched the Dirties the other day because of your recommendation, and I am watching a ton of the YMS recommendations, and I am loving them!
Adam this is so awesome. I love the Dirties and I'm so excited to see Operation Avalanche, thank you for this.
Adam looks like the subject of an early 16th century painting.
this is probably my favorite interview, and i think this is my third time watching it over the years. besides just being generally interesting, i particularly love the lesson/affirmation of contextualism: that any trait's value is defined entirely by context. i also love being reminded that intelligent filmmaking exists. i often get really irritated at how thoroughly saturated our culture is with generic, thoughtless bs that's optimized entirely for cash flow, rather than anything of cultural value.
Wait, he survived that school shooting?
The Dirties was excellent, just watching Operation Avalanche right now for the first time, it's also very good.
Please keep doing more videos like this, it's very helpful for a young filmmaker like myself and you're a fun interviewer to watch.
Such a testament to their skills and methods that I had absolutely no idea any of this was real at all going into it in terms of location and performance. Such a fun and impressive movie. So glad I finally got around to watching Matt Johnson’s films.
Matt has that intimidating combo of intelligence, social skills, kindness, and a sense of humor that takes nothing seriously and has total self-assuredness.
As a neurotic self-doubting introvert, generous charismatic funny people simultaneously fascinate and scare me. Hard to explain why, but they always set off a “does this person hate me and is mocking me by being nice?” spidey sense. Even when I know it’s totally illogical.
great interview :) glad you make this type of content as well..!!
It's cool you got an interview with Matt Johnston, I really loved the dirties and it was one of the few movies that made me realize I could make a movie. I've loved movies for so long that I'm excited to start making one soon.
I love how laid back your interviews are.
oh shit wadup cuc bboooooooooooiiiiiiiii!!!!!
I love content like this, this is brilliant! If you're reading this Adam, PLEASE TRY TO DO MORE CONTENT LIKE THIS!!!!! Love u x

The Dirties was amazing. The ending was one that stuck with me for weeks and I still love to go back and rewatch it just for that scene at the end.
I'm so glad I got to see all the episodes of NTBTS before they took it down! Even happier my voicemail could be featured on the show!
I fucking love your interviews, you always pick the coolest dudes.
You both rock!
Still got my NVTBTS dvd, gonna have to give it a rewatch.
Great interview, thank you.
watched the dirties after this. undiscovered masterpiece. so glad i heard of it.
Great interview, Adam. Matt pushing the boundaries of what is legal to film sounds interesting. I hope it does become a new norm in the industry, at least among no/low budget movies.
I like this guy and i'm really looking forward to his future stuff.
I am really looking forward to watching both of these movies!
great interview adam!
Adam is a really good interviewer. I didn't know anything about this filmmaker or movies and I was still very interested
OH SHIT WHADDUP CUCKBAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!

stuckmann led me to your channel - this was the 1st video i chose because i too love johnson - someone give this guy a decent budget
Before watching, just watched The Dirties like two weeks ago. Very good timing.
this interview was so good
I love your interviews- Matt seems like such an ambitious film maker, his innovative ways to work within a small budget were apparent from the dirties but I'm curious about his new work and what he could do with a higher funded project.
When I see Adam I said out loud "dar he is"
This video is the epoch of gay.
fabulous
I like that you have 69 likes, at least right now
Is Matt Johnson gay?

The abundance of "aboot"s is destroying my sides. Too many canadians for one video.
This is a really fascinating interview
Great interview!
I wonder if Matt ever saw Wiliam Karel's `Operation Lune´ from 2002.

Awesome! I loved the Dirties.
This was a really interesting interview, I'll have to check his stuff out.
The Dirties is such an iconic film. I'm so in love with it and its portrayal of mental illness without being too preachy. I'm so excited to get Operation Avalanche on DVD.
