Soundgarden Black Hole Sun Reaction
RIP Chris... still one of the best voices in rock history
He sings: "...no one sings like you anymore..." and thatÂŽs exactly, what i think about him.
It's weird, I saw them play this live a few days after Kurt died and Ben Shepard lost it completely, throwing his bass down and walking off stage. Never thought that lyric would mean anything else to me. Boy was I wrong. Rest in peace Chris.
That line hurts so bad everytime I hear it now. So foreboding early in his career. Rest In Peace Chris đą.
THE best in Rock!!... in my opinion.
Nailed it đŻđ€đ»
That's about Jeff Buckley just FYI
As a drummer the thing that always got me about soundgarden is the fills - every song is a masterclass on snare placement within fills, and unless it is intentionally left out for effect, every fill will have a snare on 2 and 4. I've spent hours and hours trying to emulate Matt's feel but although I can copy all his fills, I can never come close to the musicianship needed to create those from scratch myself
Matt Cameron is probably in my top 5 if not top 10 drummers ever. He's Elite man
Dude just has a timing and groove all his own.
The guitar at the beginning and through the verses were run through a leslie cab to give it that organ type sound. Amazing production by Michael Beinhorn!
Yes, but not one of the traditional Leslies. According to Michael it's either a Leslie 16 or a Fender Vibratone cabinet.
I always thought Kim used an Ebow as well. I could be wrong, but I've used them before and that's what it always reminded me most of.
@@KyleKalevra
Yes, the intro is using an ebow.
Beatles style. Love this song. So heavy and soft at the same time. It cuts.
Bro, have you seen the video on here, Producing Like a Pro or something like that? A full hour of Beinhorn on the making of this song. Beinhorn's philosophy and leadership style definitely shows, but also his deep respect for Chris and Matt in particular.
Aloha Geebz, if you wanna hear one of the baddest tunes Soundgarden ever did ' 4th of July ' is a straight up killer and possibly the darkest riff ever composed.
100% đ€đœđ
You beat me to it on this one
I'll second that! :)
Interesting tuning moment, & Ben's bass work doesn't get the love it deserves.
Not only does Ben's playing not get the recognition it deserves, the man also wrote Head down which is a fucking savage tune.
đ€đŒ
Chris Cornell is perfection - in front of Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, or on stage alone. His voice resonates in my soul.
"No one sings like you anymore" sums it up perfectly.
Chris was a god amongst men and the world is darker without him. I wish all of our love had been enough to save him.
You could throw a dart at the catalogs of music I listed above and come up with something great to listen to, but I recommend: Fell on Dark Days (Soundgarden), Show Me How to Live (Audioslave), Hunger Strike (ToTD) with Eddie Vedder, and if you should just want to listen to his incredible voice, listen to his cover of "Nothing Compares to You".
Well said. A tragic loss, a horror, really.
A favorite I keep coming back to is Like a Stone by Audioslave. His voice still haunts me.
@@TheRealSkeletor his solo acoustic version is even better imo
Check out "the day I tried to live"! Soundgarden is still somehow a criminally underrated band
You obviously did not come up in the 90s if you think Soundgarden is underated. They were fucking huge in that decade along with other members in the "Big 5" as I call it. Soungarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP, and Alice in Chains. (In no particular order)
@@thereaver8083 I am proud to say I saw all those bands during the 90s. It was an awesome time for rock music. I even saw Pearl Jam open for Soundgarden at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas (now long gone). Best. Show. Ever.
"Its like you're on the wrong so of a heroic dose. Not that I would know..." MY SIDES AHAHA
I don't know what he means... nope, not at all.
That was gold.
"heroic dose" toooo good. hahaha
The fact that you are so into rock music makes your channel pure gold.
Another amazing Soundgarden's song is Jesus Christ Pose...or everything out of Badmotorfinger
Or Nostalgia by Gorguts
Jesus christ pose blew me away when i first heard it. Soo different an powerfoul
Easily one of my favourite albums by anyone ever. It just...I mean...It's so...
I haven't the words.
The only amazing Soundgarden song.
@@shaneferris6742 now that's just stupid lol
You often talk of the soundtrack of life, and I was an awkward and weird nerdy little black soul in my teens, I remember that hearing this song for the first time was the first time in my life I felt like there must be someone else in the world just like me, or this song wouldnt exist. Changed my life in 5 mins. Pure gold. Noone sings like you anymore Chris
My Soundgarden picks would be 'Blow Up The Outside World', 'Burden In My Hand', 'Fell On Black Days', 'The Day I Tried To Live'.
And please do take a break and put your health ahead of doing anymore vids Geebz, we aren't going anywhere.
Yes, all of this!
Yes all of these please.
I'd add Jesus Christ Pose and also Pretty Noose. Personally not that fond of Fell on Black Days.
Second all of these! Plus Limo Wreck, Fresh Tendrils and ESPECIALLY 4th of July!
No love for Tighter and Tighter? So clearly a carryover from the Superunknown sessions.
No one sings like you anymore, Chris. RIP.
4:07 - "No-one sings like you anymore..." :-/
God damned how I miss this man and his voice!
One of my favorite songs, still evokes memories of those days and how this song stood out at the time.
Chris Cornell had such an incredible voice, so sad we lost him. Great video as always.
All this 90s music is my absolute favorite era of music. All the bands were so unique. The "grunge" label really didn't make sense.
I remember being so impressed with this song when it came out. It melted my 14 year old face off. I'm still impressed. đ
Chris Cornel was one of my favorite vocalists of all time. It's so sad that he is gone but his music will live on forever. He made so much awesome music with Soundgarden, Audioslave and his solo stuff. When you get a chance you should check out Fell on Black Days, The Day I Tried to Live, Slaves and Bulldozers, Outshined and Blow Up the Outside World by Soundgarden or Show Me How to Live, Cochise, Like a Stone, Be Yourself and Shadow on the Sun by Audioslave and Sunshower from his solo work.
I'd really like to see you do a video on Audioslave. Ideally the song Cochise. Also would love Sound of Muzak if you continue down the Porcupine Tree rabbit hole. Love the content!!
I really really really recommend listening to Jeff Buckley. All of his songs and covers are masterpieces, they really are worth listening to!
I second this!
I third this hallelujah
Yes, please! His version of Hallelujah is beautiful, but Grace and So Real will blow your mind. I'd love to see videos on all three of them.
@@kenndoll83 true and last goodbye all beautiful songs !!
100% Grace is a absolute masterpiece of a album, i just wish he was still with us so i could hear more.
Mother Love Bone - Chloe Dancer/crown of Thorns
Yes Please.
yep!
I appreciate you! STP was the first concert I went to just a few years before Weiland passed away rip â ïž any song off Core or Purple would be great.
OR Velvet Revolver. I kind of felt he was trying for awhile with that one. AND the best parts of G&R were there to make it epic!
Man, that was hard to listen to. I was introduced to Soundgarden by my older brother who past several years ago but hearing Black Hole Sun now, mere hours after learning that my father has also past, had such a profound emotional effect on me. It's such an under appreciated track and has firmly cemented itself as my all time favorite song since its release.
God rest Chris's soul! Geebz my man! If you haven't dove into Audioslave, I HIGHLY recommend it! It's comprised of Chris Cornell on front and the rest of the band is the members of Rage Against the Machine (omitting Zack)
It's my favorite 'super group's of all time and pretty much every track is a banger đ€
Still here! Aaaaall right!
I much prefer Audioslave over Soundgarden
Audioslave - Like a Stone, or I Am The Highway.
@@lindsayheywood7195 Same!
The beginning is played on a Leslie amp. Rotating speaker.
The guitar sound is run through a Fender Vibratone cab aka Fender's version of a Leslie cab. Chris Cornell recorded and comped his own vocal takes so he could work in peace. Apparently he blew up quite a few vintage mics :'D
I would love to see you break down some Temple of the Dog or Mad Season.
EDIT: Stay healthy.
Mad season fook yeah
"Wake up" from Mad season would be awesome.
@@williamclose6978 The entire Above album is great. One of my favorite albums of all time.
This one always had a familiar vibe that hooked me right away. I grew up listening to The Beatles on vinyl thanks to my parent's record collection and the 1st drop into Cornell's "black hole sun" with the drums behind him tapped into my love for songs like Come Together, Happiness is a Warm Gun, I am the Walrus, and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
Soundgarden - tighter and tighter. Song will melt your face.
Soundgarden is one of those bands that more I listen to it, more I love it and I never get bored
This and fell on black days, absolutely epic.
Burden in my Hand. My favorite Soundgarden song. Itâs excellent.
One of two songs my husband and I actually danced to at our wedding party! haha love it!
Kim thayils solos are so unique and beautiful and overlooked
Stay healthy, man đ€
The producer Michael Beinhorn plays mellotron in places on the album.
Brings me back to middle school. Love this and their songs Outshined and Spoonman among others!
Geebz if you like these guys I think that you will love Audioslave.
Show me how to live would be a good choice.
@@bluenightgrinner8620 Over Cochise? Best rock scream of all time?
I agree, the lead singer in that band sounds just like the guy from Soundgarden
@@MrWorstnameever đ
@@chris16durban Valid point. Cochise was on my mind when writing it.
Also jesus christ pose, rusty cage, outshined. And also audioslave rocks too. Thanks for your work.
Seasons, that's the one that hits me. I know it's not Soundgarden, but ever since we lost Chris that song just crushes me everytime I listen to it.
Still here brother, take time for yourself and your health. Our time here is limited, we should spend it wisely.
The swirly guitar on the left was played through a Fender Rhoads cab (I think) which works like a leslie but spins on the opposite axis. I can't remember what the actual cabinet was, but that's how they got the sound.
First time I saw them live was one the louder than love tour April 1990 when they played in a small club in Brussels with about 100 people attending the show and I was totally blown away by the explosion of energy on stage. To this day 2 of my favourite SG tracks are "Ugly truth" and" Hands all over", the opening tracks of that Louder Than Love album. Since you're into production, Ugly Truth is a recording you really should check out. Especially the mid-section where they recorded all these layers of high pitched psychedelic guitar notes creating these harmonic waves with Chris's screaming: If you were mine to give I might throw it away, panning from one side to the other back and forth with a nice phaser on top of it. Absolute "Makes you face melt" material.
The 90's were so great. We got to see all these bands, NIN, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Manson, STP, Tool, so many more. My kids were getting old enough to go with us to concerts, we took our oldest son to NIN, Soundgarden, lots more. It's a great thing to pass your music to your kids. The nineties were a pretty good time to have been a parent to my son's. Sorry to drag on, these bands and songs bring out the feels for me. Now my son's turn me on to bands like Yelawolf... Age is just a number.
Huge fan of everything Soundgarden here! One of my favourites is in fact the last track off what is currently their final album,King Animal, called âRowingâ. Itâs got a great bass riff and is so awesomely haunting due to the killer vocals and arrangements.
Such an amazing song. From a great band. The peak of grunge really gave us some amazing albums. Real music.
Soundgarden - Head Down...I'd love to hear a breakdown on that one
Always nice to see Ben's song on the album get some love. :)
It's one of my favorites. If I recall correctly, Ben actually played drums on the recording and was described by Beinhorn as drumming like a person stumbling down stairs. (Or something like that) which I totally agree with the description, but it is what makes the song so unique.
One of my favourite songs on Superunknown for sure!
Stone Temple Pilotâs Interstate Love Song has plenty for you to sink your teeth into. The chord progressions they are using go way deep but the vocal choices make it sound so simple and straightforward. I donât want to say anymore and possibly influence your first listen. Love the channel!
Congrats of over 100,00 subscribers! You may be decomposing (as am I), but you ROCK!
great song from an amazing album...love for you to do a song like "4th of july" if you have the time...you won't regret it!!
Yessir! Forth of July for sure. Tuning is all jacked. Half the strings are down to drop B (if I remember right) and the rest are standard. Great jam!! đ€đ€
Such a good song!
You have to do Cemetery Gates by Pantera just so soulful and powerful, really need to check it out!
i fuqing love that tampora band
Brilliant song.
Chris Cornell was an angel. He will always be my #1 vocalist to front a band in my lifetime. PLEASE react to something off of Badmotorfinger.....Searching with my good eye closed, Slaves and Bulldozers..etc. :) Great vid as always.
I love Soundgarden!! I was lucky enough to see them in concert twice. It was amazing. Please do Spoonman!!! It is one of my favorites!
Soundgarden. MY FAVES!!!! Please do more, they have so many amazing deep tracks that never got play. Limo Wreck. Slaves & Bulldozers you would LOOOVE.
Do "I Am The Highway" by Audioslave, a great Chris Cornell track.
"Heroic Dose" still makes me chuckle.
But what a track, what a treasure.
RIP Chris Cornell.
Awesome you reacted to this! Their song Slaves and Bulldozers is the one that blew me away
I'm envious of your perfectly groomed beard.. just wanted to really thank you for all you do. It's very obvious your heart and personality are unique to this World. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wonderful insights into music. I really want to thank you for your selfless duty to the Children. So much love your way my Brother! Don't ever stop!
It would be interesting to hear you react to Norah Jones' take on this song. It's a really beautiful cover that brings out how good the songwriting is.
YEP RIP CHRIS ( AMAZING VOICE EVER ) ALWAYS ;; THATS HIM LOOPING HIMSELF ; AND SOMEHOW HE IS SINGING BACKGROUND AND LEAD ; LOL ; HE KNOWS HOW TO DO ALL THAT . ITS AWESOME ;; I MISS HIS HIM...
My favorite singer of all time. Miss you, Chris.
Another of my favorite bands! Great Soundgarden songs: burden in my hand, pretty noose, the day I tried to live. ALSO Chris Cornell sang with two supergroups Temple of the Dog and Audioslave. Check out "say hello to heaven" by Temple of the dog.
Also, hear your voice going, man take care of yourself and hope u get better soon
Beyond the Wheel doesn't get enough love. The solo is ridiculous, it could melt your face all the way down to your wisdom teeth
4th of July is haunting. One of my faves
One of my top three from that album. The layered vocal harmonies are incredible. And the sludge in the guitar tone is so thick it sounds like the amps are submerged in a vat of molasses.
Yo you cool af old man, make the channel whatever you want bro you got some great vibes and you eloquently convey your YEARS of experience and dumb it down for us. Keep on keepin!
The guitar solo is incredible . Highly underrated.
The guitar at the beginning he plays through a Leslie organ cabinet. The speaker rotates inside of the cabinet which gives it that unique sound.
Geebz, it is honestly such a pleasure to watch these videos! If you ever do some kind of e-learning course that teaches how to apply the various face-melting techniques in composition, I'd sign right the fuck up in a heartbeat
Chris Cornell the lead singer of Soundgarden died May 18, 2017, one of their biggest hit songs was "Black hole sun". A few months later August 21, 2017 was a total solar eclipse "Great American Eclipse" . It was literally a "black hole sun", last one to happen was in the 70s.
The live acoustic version of this is amazing.
I love that the face he makes is exactly the one I make when listening to this song.
'If you were on a really heroic dose but on the wrong side of it man, it coulda really blown you sideways'. Ha ha, absolute legend!!
the intro guitar sound is from a Fender Cab with a Lezlee rotating horn in it. i have a copy of it that has a smaller spinning Lezlee Rotating horn i can turn on or off and slow down or speed up.. it's fun to play with. and that was a Snare that was Cut at 18 in stead of 12 or 14. it was a test idea by the drummer and they liked it so kept it at 18 inch snare.
This is my favorite Soundgarden song. Not that there isn't other great songs by them but this one is the first song I think of when someone mentions this band. I just love it. Thanks for the vid! Outshined, Fell of Black Days, Burden in my Hand are a few good tunes by them. I'm sure some true Soundgarden fans out there can give you some good deeper cuts.
Would love to hear your reaction to Soundgarden's "Tighter and Tighter"
Chris best vocals I think is on slaves and bulldozers.. his music remains a huge part of my life and just hits so differently after his passing .... rip
Something that has always blown me away about Black Hole Sun (and I've been listening to it since it came out!) is the vocal layering. Especially in the second chorus (starting @ 4:14 ). First time through, it's in unison, but 2nd time through @ 4:37 , it's like Chris's voice starts to go "out of phase" with itself, until it really separates at 4:48 . It's brilliant and creepy and awesome. It does a similar thing in the third chorus/outro repeats adding more and more layers, but for me, it's that second chorus that's really face-melting.
Thanks again, your channel brings me lots of joy and makes me want to keep on doing music and sing.
Chris was an amazing and inspirational vocalist and we are so lucky to still have his music.
I'd love to hear your analysis on Dream On by Aerosmith, it really makes my face melt big time, every time, even after all these years.
The guitar at the beginning is played with an E bow. (Electronic bow) that uses a magnetic field to vibrate the strings. I believe. Which makes it just come and go and swell without any picking sounds.
I gotta say I hear you say "Awwwright" in my head multiple times a day. Thanks for the videos.
(My favorite band ever)... I believe they recorded almost 50 different guitar parts for this song...
Matt Cameron. Great drummer for Soundgarden and Pearl Jam amoung others.
Chris Cornell's brilliance as a vocalist and songwriter speaks for itself. R.I.P
Aloha!
I would love to see you reacting to Thy Catafalque. Especially to one of their "trademark", 10-20 minutes long songs.
For example:
Vashegyek
Molekulåris gépezetek
SgĂșrr Eilde MĂłr
Malmok jĂĄrnak
Or the opposite: Tsitsushka
Anyone that drops a Terrance McKenna reference and analyzes one of my favorites bands of all time in one video is ok in my book đ€đ»
Love Black Hole Sun âïž! RIP Chris
For me one of the more complex arrangements was Like Suicide from Superunknown as well. I'm so happy you seem to be running through my favourites from the 90s in this run with Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, and Stone Temple Pilots. Can you complete the list and hit some Faith No More as well. Evidence or King for a Day from the King for a Day album are amazing.
Keep up the great work dude! Loving it from over here in NZ
Black Hole Sun is one of my favorites. Thank you.
This song and Smashing Pumpkins' Disarm were out around the same time and changed my perspective on music. I found music that MATTERED and fell in love with it.
More than the sum of parts; Chris, Kim, Matt and Ben all add something to the performance of every song on Superunknown.
I'd love to see a video on Audioslave - Like a stone, if you're interested in more Chris Cornell!
Also Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike!
1. Great analysis as usual
2. Kim Thayil is the most criminally underrated guitarist of the â90âs music scene
3. Other Soundgarden with great layered production is âFourth of Julyâ
4. Stone Temple Pilots? Cool! Maybe do âStill Remainsâ

On the wrong side of it! Dude I love your channel so much. I'm new here, but I've been watching you daily! Soundgarden is my favorite band ever. Keep it up Geebz!! Also more Soundgarden PLEASE!!!!
SLAVES AND BULLDOZERS!! PLEASE!!!
P.P.S. - Nirvana was everything to me in my youth but as I got older I realized just how amazing Soundgarden was & still is. They were able to paint such beautifully dark pictures with their sound while creating such powerful emotion in the listener that can bring one to tears (which I have on several occasions).
Also, have you ever thought about how crazy it was that so much talent cane out of that area in Washington?
So much talent that It's like the universe wanted to express itself so badly that it pooled all of it's energy in one area to make sure it was heard.
They cracked the code:
Beatles meet Black Sabbath!
Good grief, this music is so much a part of my personal soundtrack, I have a hard time remembering it is now 30 years old! Canât explain how much it mirrored my own emotional journey through my teens and 20âs. I was also reading too much Nietzsche at the time, coincidentally. đ€·ââïžđ€·ââïž
For STP you could do Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart, Tumble In The Rough, Coma, Interstate Love Song, the list goes on and on...
