  • Watch Drunk History: Black Stories to learn a thing or two about historical Black figures. But be careful, drink responsibly.
In 1897, one of the worst acts of colonial theft would occur when the British Army took Benin City (in present day Nigeria) in a violent raid and looted the Kingdom of their Bronze artefacts. To this day 4,000 of these beautiful pieces of African art are scattered in museums around the world. Actors Tom Moutchi and Ty Logan tell us a story about a prince's mission of restitution and chance encounter leading to the return of some long sought after artefacts.

Benin boy here, born in Lagos but schooled in Benin for two years (igbinedion sec. school) and went to grandads' every christmas till i was about 7. Moved to the UK in my teens and never really spoke or understood the language but my connection to that land is deep. Love to all my Edo people worldwide, from Manchester to Italy!

They are an example of a culture made physical, by the finest of bronze workers and craftsmen.
Each one represents an important historical moment or victory. Integrated carefully into the existing gallery, so that combined they tell a clear, beautiful, and integral history of the Benin people.
Which the British then ripped apart sold, kept, and gave away (to other western countries) literally destroying an entire country's history and randomly scrambling what they didn't destroy.
(They also burned downed the palace so it could never be rebuilt.)

    • @MKRex
      @MKRex Před 3 lety +8

The word "tribe" is a leftover from colonial times, when colonialist thought all West Africans were all one ethnic group, with no distinct cultures, languages or identities.
The word reduces sophisticated ethnic groups, to tribal communities, whilst you would never hear of white ethnic groups like Mediterraneans, Slavs, Franks, Saxons etc, being referred to as "tribes" in modern times.
      Nigeria does not have tribes

I’m white (Scottish and Irish heritage as far back as 700yrs) never know money in the family on my mums side her dad was an engineer in WW2 and he worked all his days and put ALL his money in bank shares cause that’s what people were told to do 😂 I’ve got Crohn’s disease and on the verge of dying before getting diagnosed because I had a prick of a consultant who wasn’t doing his job properly and my mum decided to take me private luckily the guy sent me to his clinic but I was on a waiting list for a surgery another and my natural weight is 12 stone and I went down to 7 so my mum sold last of the shares to get my operation. My dads side are farmers but in the north north east coast of Scotland, as far north as you can get in the east. Trust me nobody with money wants to
Live there unless you like cold, wind and rain(like ice rain) so don’t think those fields are worth money. I think my grandpa was sick of waking up at 4am to milk cows and ploughing fields (with no technology) til it got dark and sold the farm and bought a hardware store but I don’t see my dad he’s a functioning alcoholic that only cares about himself. The Irish haven’t been treated the best and neither have the Scottish if I go back to my mum or dads clan. I live in Glasgow now. A city built my slaves. Live a humble life because my disease has taken away my energy, health, fitness and a tiny bit of my desire. This shit pisses me off. I’ve been down south and seen how much money is there. I’ve seen the kids schools with AstroTurf football pitches and shit. Why can’t 1- The british museums give back there shit they have stolen from any country, 2. Why can’t the really rich kids from the establishment, the kinds that go to the richest boarding schools and the other rich white kids that have benefited work out how much there grandparents made from slavery and give it back in certain ways in poor communities 3.why can’t we as people forget about race and come together, anyone who’s of age or fit stand up and take back what is ours. Give back what was stolen yeah but start holding our governments accountable. If you call up all your pals and ask them to give you. a percentage of your earnings and they will stick it all together and build a gated community and you find out he’s been paying off a mortgage for a multimillion pound house and taking women out to crazy expensive restaurants and loads of other things then he’s gonna get rushed except if we do tnat it’s terrorism

For the record, Benin only shared in war bounty with the Portuguese (& the Dutch) who were at the time Business partners. It was customary at the time to take war prisoners, who would serve for a time until their debts were paid.
Benin outlawed slavery in the late 17th century and was vehemently against it, even incurring the hatred of the Dutch who eventually mounted an assassination attempt on the Oba in 1735.
It was a practice generally frowned upon by ancient Benin.

Move on, everyone who had any part in it is long dead. How many people now only care about this because of this video and had no prior knowledge of it. The Benin kingdom no longer exists and no-one knows the exact location where the artefacts were taken from. The UK has paid millions of pounds in aid to Nigeria, but no-one will ever mention that. Why don't we stop digging up the past trying to find contentious issues which will only make us hate each other even more. Let it go and cheer up.

Ignoring history because u don't care and were not affected by it doesn't help or solve anything. Simple returning of artefacts to the owners and keeping pictures of the artefacts and filling the British history museum with more British history such as things related to tudors and victorians and celts. Its really not that hard. Stop being ignorant it's disgusting

The Benin kingdom still exists I live in Benin City, I speak Benin language our palace is still where it has always been in Ring road our Oba (king) still sits on the throne. Our culture is still being taught at homes and in schools and there is nobody in Benin who does not care about our bronzes and artworks stolen from us. There is nobody who doesn't remember ur great Oba Ovonramen who was forced into exile in 1897 because he refused to give up his people to the British colonialists. The fact that you think this is sad very sad I can't believe that somebody will willingly live in ignorance. I won't tell you to read this or that because frankly why should I be educating you. @@dotijani38 Nigeria is not the same as the Benin Kingdom. The UK when it was Anglo Saxon was pillaged for gold and artefacts by the Vikings from Denmark and Norway for hundreds of years but do you see anyone arguing that reparations should be made by Denmark and Norway to the UK. People are so desparate to find an issue to feel injusticed about they are delving back in to history and it will never end. We've got to come together and stop finding stuff to get annoyed about and look forwards. If it's not the Benin bronzes, it'll be something else. If people in the UK really cared about Nigeria they'd be up in arms about the current murder, rape and pillaging by Boko Haram that's going on RIGHT NOW but no, everyone is getting angry about something the British did in the late 19th century.

@@osazuwademiirowa-omoregie2500 everything you said is left over culture from Benin. There's plenty of left over culture from Anglo Saxon Britain in the UK but I wouldn't say that they still exist. You live in Nigeria my friend. The UK was pillaged for gold and artefacts for hundreds of years by the Vikings but no one in the UK is asking for reparations or gold back from them. Nigeria has much more current problems like Boko Haram, huge corruption in government and terrible human rights records. But the people want their bronze plates back from the Uk.
