I've got to say the Darkangel marine on the original space marine game box set (before it was called epic) was always my iconic "space marine" image but this is definitely one of the core images we all share who played second edition. Having these iconic characters and all the work you and others are doing to bring back a bit of that original feel is great and absolutely inspiring.
Thanks for the comment mate. It's always great to read about other people's experiences with oldhammer, like yours. Glad you're enjoying the content too 😊
Holy shit, all these years and I never knew he had a mullet/pony tail, and I never realised there was a GD sculpt of it. Awesome. I always wanted to recreate Ancient Galatan, and was going to do it with the Artemis Inquisitor model. It was way beyond my scope and ability, but the thought was there.
Same. I first/last played 40K in 2nd edition with my Blood Angels and I was aware of the resin GD model yet I never noticed the tail! I plan on reviving my Blood Angels with a nod back to 2nd, hopefully having a go at my own conversion to mirror the box art.
I might be my hazy memory, but wasn't there a variation of the artwork where the entire powerfist was yellow? And he was holding a combi-bolter instead?
I recall my local hobby store having a 5ft cardboard cutout of the same and my (very) young mind not being able comprehend that it differed to the box art!
I first touched 40k in 2004 or 2005. I think it was 3rd edition. I was in high school and my friend and I pooled our cash together to buy the Space Marine v Tyranid boxset. He also bought some chaos marines and a metal terminator character. I kit bashed a space marine missing his leg (I think from a running Khorne chaos marine). One hand was planted to the ground, propping him up (the rocket launcher hand famous in the plasma gun meme), the other help a plasma pistol with an auspex on the ground showing he was surrounded. Finally I glued pennies to the bottom of the base to keep him from toppling over. I dug out these old minis and couldn’t find him. I bet he’s somewhere though, on a crowded bookshelf or random box.
7th edition Warhammer Fantasy Warriors of Chaos had great art for Valkia the Bloody and Vilitch the Curseling way before they minis (which came out in 8th edition). I converted my own minis based on the art and it was so much fun and I was really happy with the result.
When i think Blood Angels Captain, i always think beware the "Black Rage!" "Remember brothers! We are his Angels of death!!......For the God Emperor!....Death to the xeno, the mutant abomination and the heretic!!!" You know Mathew, something along those lines. Also a very nice kitbash that sits nicely with the rest of your Blood Angels chapter.😎
I collect salamanders for my space marines and back in the day i had loads of the old sculpts for the second edition games, i loved how simple everything is. Ngl i would pay to get like an option to collect the retro style of everything. Hey at least when it comes to getting eldar they still are the old range XD
😍 I didn't intend melancholy but if you like it I'll roll with it. Thank you for your kind comment. But I'd be curious as to why you said melancholy? 😊
0:13 I had that Tyco as well. I took Him, and a large contingent of Death Company to the Tyranid launch event in 2nd edition. I got to go first as well because Death Company.
I was very lucky to have a friend gift me the games day 2012 sculpt, just feel I cant do the model justice with my painting skills. Someday soon ill paint em up.
Great minds... I picked up a previously painted Games Day captain for this exact purpose; to lead the BA in my 2nd ed. box. I'll be stripping him and giving him a lunch box bolter before painting, of course. Love your content btw 😎👍
Although not technically a Captain, my go-to mental image of a Blood Angels leader is from the Space Crusade box art. Nowhere near brave enough to try it, though. But I do have a set of STLs that look suspiciously similar to the heroes and villains on the HeroQuest box....
I just discovered you channel and I just want to say I love all your old warhammer content and conversions they are sick. I'm a relatively new player, I started around late 7th edition, but I always loved the old models from the old eras. I have a full firstborn Dark Angels army and I have tried twice now to recreate the old company master with the big winged helmet and cloak, while clutching his giant sword. I've not attempted a one to one creation in the paint job like yours, but I was able to recreate that same pose with that sick helmet.
In my personal 40k journey there's no image more iconic than that one - the first edition I bought (I still have the box, holding a disorganised horde of wargear cards and templates and plastic minis from the dawn of time), and the local GW store had that captain scaled up to full height on their front window. And in all that time I somehow never noticed he had a ponytail... Your Primaris version looks great; I've never attempted something like that myself (my conversions tend to be about 'what can these parts do' rather than 'what can I do with these parts', I go in with a vague idea and the final goal reveals itself along the way), but there is a photo in the 40k Compendium of various wacky conversions of the RTB01 space marines, and one of them's the top of a marine attached to the bottom half of a Dalek, and I've got the necessary parts, so one day I expect I'll make a chaos version of the Dalek Marine.
Yep made things based on art a few times, built Yarricks Rhino with 2 heavy bolters, used old Jess Goodwin picture of 3 Guardsmen as a rough basis for my mech infantry army I used in 4th and currently I'm building an entire Harakoni Warhawk army based off a bit of fan art work called 'Not all Hero's wear power armour' by Greyskull, whole thing when done will be about company sized, built using the old 4th ed codex and doctrine system as a guide for formation and equipment. It's not a 1:1 copy, used helmets more in line with the GW depiction in the Guard Codex and the trooper mid drop you see when you google Harakoni, but made sure I had 4 models in the first platoon to represent those in the picture (and may be inlcluded in a diorama if I get round to it).
Great video. I do have a 3rd edition Space Wolves supplement codex, (I still have the battle force box it came in. Still have the original minis glued up, never quite finished them!😂 Although, there's lots of loose bits, possibly enough to make a full marine or two), and perhaps i should recreate the cover art. Not quite as iconic looking as your Blood Angle, but still kind of cool looking. And i do like the idea of updating to primaris... Hopefully won't take thirty odd years to finish, though!😂
@@Miniscape-wh40k I have a massive backlog of painting, enjoy more of the converting side, but getting there. You and Minisodes are inspiring me to have a go at some retro Wolves. I do remember dipping back into the hobby many years ago, to find Games Workshop had changed the colour scheme away from grey, to a more bluish shade. Was most displeased!😂 As I say, though, you've gotten me quite nostalgic, so may try and hunt down similar colours and give it a go. Thanks for all your great content. 👍
Finecast is why both this captain and Marco Columbo are uncommon (even rare for the later). Like you said it was infamous for miscasts and warpage, and the miscast wasn't just bubbles, sometimes entire parts of the model would be missing. A friend had a commissar without a face due to a large bubble. Who would want to buy a limited edition model and risk it being miscast; especially now that it's out of production?
Only Failcast I bought were Plague Marines, and they had loads of mistakes on them. I got them on the day the resin came out though, so didn't know about it. Much later I got a Cockatrice and it was good, they definitely got much better later on.
If your not confident with your sculpting work you can recreate a lot of the cable components with with guitar wire, i his case just into the belt and upper chest to string three lengths along his abdomen. I do however thing your right, that the newer bolter takes a little something away from the character...

Dude, nice try but not even close to the original pose. The right leg in the original, as depicted on the box art, was straight and stretched out to the right of the marine. The left leg was bent with the foot facing more to the front giving the impression of bracing the pose. The right arm was mirroring the leg pointing slightly down and to the right with the head facing down the barrel of the gun while the left elbow was slightly higher than the shoulder as it bent raising that power fist. Your conversion does not match in the positioning of the legs nor the head. Non of this is to say that it was not good work. It is still a uniquely posed marine. How do I know the details. I have two from Games Day in Sydney Australia, one for me and one for my son who gave me his when he painted it. By the way, do you honestly believe that a figure handed out to celebrate Games Day would have been anything but perfect? Don't you think, that knowing the problems with fine cast figures they would not have checked each and every figure handed out before the day? My two are perfect and I would prefer them to your nice conversion as the model that truly reflects the box art.
