    This was awesome to watch. Any chance you might do a session breakdown of "New Grass"? The piano sounds amazing in that and I would love to see how you went about creating it if possible. It almost sounds like it began in Stratus.

    Amazing! Thanks so much Olafur for this brilliant insight into your creative mind and process! I have one question, I hope someone may be able to help me .... It's about the "piano layer". I am really curious about how the various piano channels (different microphones) are "panned". I wonder if Olafur reads this, or anyone else can help? I'm am Ableton user, not Pro Tools .... I'm not sure if the panning was actually shown on the screen? If yes - would love for someone to let me know! Many thanks

    • @frequencydata
      @frequencydata Před 3 lety

      He talks about it a lot at around 32:00. Basically there's two stereo mics on the piano with the right mic capturing the higher notes and the left mic capturing the lower notes. Then there's two mics, a center and a bottom that are both in mono, no panning, and finally two room mics which are in stereo but there's not a ton of panning as far as I can tell.

    • @DavidFedele
      @DavidFedele Před 3 lety

      @@frequencydata - Huge thanks for replying. I don't actually have access to a good piano and recording studio at the moment, just using VSTs for my sounds, including piano (Noire from Native Instruments - I love it). I wonder how Olafur's set-up would best be emulated using VSTs in a DAW, rather than a real piano and mics?
      For example: Would I play a song, then duplicate the tracks and treat each track as an individual piano/mic set-up that Olafur has? And then how would I pan each track to best emulate Olafur's setup? Hope this makes sense?! :-)

    • @frequencydata
      @frequencydata Před 3 lety

      @@DavidFedele I use Addictive Keys and they let you select what "mics" you want and then mix them as you see fit. If you don't have that option I'd probably do something like what you're mentioning, send the track to 4 different busses: The first bus - Cut out some highs and pan left to simulate the mic capturing the left side of the piano, The second bus - Cut out some lows and pan to the right to simulate the right half of the piano, The third bus - cut out a lot of highs and give a low end boost to simulate the under the piano mic, and the fourth bus - Simulate the room mic(s) by maybe cutting some low end and using a good room reverb (to simulate whatever kind of space you want.

    Thanks for this Olafur! I was wondering what mic setup you have for these tutorials. I'm looking to invest in some new audio equipment for recording vocals from my room. I know there are many other factors that go into this but I'm just curious what you recommend for audio recordings for an indie artist.
