Personally I think the term “memorial” is more appropriate translation for the Vietnamese term “ngày giỗ”, e.g. “tomorrow we will have a family getting together for my “dad’s memorial”. The term “the celebration of death anniversary” is correct too, but it seems a way to use word by word to translate, so it sounds a bit awkward. Normally we don’t celebrate a sad day! I still cry on my mom, dad, brothers, son’s memorials when thinking about the beautiful past with my loved ones…

I’ve just introduced your videos to my 83 yo mum and she said she’s already been listening to you 😅. She said it’s very easy to follow as you speak slowly. She has no problem with vocabulary but native speakers are normally too fast for her.

Actually, parents in Vietnam don't ask their children send money back to them. It's not a Vietnamese tradition, but it is a way to show their respect and dutiful to their parents.
I disagree Relatives, especially parents in viet nam expect their overseas children ‘s money They assume in the US or foreign countries, money is scattered everywhere and it’s easy to rake in

If you are invited to one, you will definitely see it as a celebration. Maybe there are exceptions, but they are mostly like that. For our passed away grandparents' death anniversaries, we usually gather at the house of the oldest child, if possible. This is because the oldest child, or the oldest son if they are from the North, is the one who is responsible for taking care of the altars of the ancestors.
Totally agree with what u said. Different religions and different subcultures might hold the funerals and death anniversary differently. Not all Vietnamese people know these differences. Many thanks for your videos aiming to support Vietnamese learners especially.

In English you have siblings, in Vietnamese we have "huynh đệ", archaic for youth but still employable. About death anniversary, i use "commemoration" word to explain the event to Westerners. In underdeveloped countries, parents invest all their assets to their children's education, they don't keep any savings for their retirement, that's why kids ought to be grateful and must take care of them. I live in the US, we have a retirement plan (401k), we will opt to go to nursing home thus avoiding to become a burden to our children.

death anniversary sounds too morbid and more like a direct translation. I’d use “memorial day” instead.

I agree with you at this point. Using the word" memorials" instead of death anniversary sounds more appropriate in the context.

In English you have siblings, in Vietnamese we have "huynh đệ", archaic for youth but still employable. About death anniversary, i use "commemoration" word to explain the event to Westerners. In underdeveloped countries, parents invest all their assets to their children's education, they don't keep any savings for their retirement, that's why kids ought to be grateful and must take care of them. I live in the US, we have a retirement plan (401k), we will opt to go to nursing home thus avoiding to become a burden to our children.
