- Some of us live in climates that allow us to ride year 'round, but some motorcyclists have to suffer through winter every year, waiting for the spring sun to thaw the snow and let them ride again. Or do they...? In this episode of On Two Wheels, Zack travels to the frozen lakes of Wisconsin to remember how life on two wheels changes when winter comes in the icy north. Bundle up and get ready for ice racing!
--
If you’re lucky enough to live in a climate that allows riding year 'round you may never have considered the deep withdrawal that can begin to pump through your veins after months of winter and no riding. In some parts of the world this cocktail of desperation and cold weather explodes into one of the craziest pastimes On Two Wheels: ice racing.
Having grown up in the wilds of New England, but largely away from ice racing, staffer Zack Courts was sent to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There he met up with former Editor-At-Large Aaron Frank (and his Kawasaki KX250F “Ice Ninja”) for a brush-up lesson on motorcycling during the winter in the icy north. Evidently all you need is a used motocrosser, heavily studded tires, and a few feet of ice over your average lake. Ride along with Zack as he experiences two things from his youth that are rarely combined; fingers numb from the cold, and motorcycles.

I can't think of a single thing I haven't enjoyed on this channel. keep it up, guys. also, I'd love to ride on ice, buy not many frozen lakes in central Texas.
+Zack Courts Come to Asia n experience the malaysian cubprix
+Aaron Fink We're completely lacking in frozen lakes here in Phoenix, too. Can't say I'm all that bummed about it though.. heh
Tell that to 2021👍👍
These guys are really good riders yet they always say how they are terrible riders.
But they can't ride sport bikes without hurting and having to stop.
I got cold from just watching
Loved this episode! I'm from Wisconsin and went to watch these races growing up. You're right it's worse when too warm because you're driving through the water. When cold enough you're staying dry and working hard enough to keep (relatively) warm
I grew up snowmobiling in frigid New Hampshire winters - trails, lakes, even some closed down roads up in the White Mountains. The lakes were always great fun, with people riding - and even driving cars - on the ice when it got thick enough. Bikes too! This makes me more than a bit nostalgic!
Always the best bike reviewer and the best instructors who teach us to maintain the bike . .
DO love your channel
you guys have by far the best motorbike (ill say motorsport in general) show I've ever seen. Been a pleasure to watch and learn. Keep up the great work
You guys are living the dream life. Keep doing the amazingly good stuffs! I enjoy watching them very much.
I found out this channel just recently ... awesome guys. U have a true spirit of being motorcyclist... big fan of urs now
Zack was okay after he was able to do his wheelie during the first leg of the race. I love it!
Always really well done videos, clear, informative, entertaining. About time I subscribed! Cheers
Once again, amazing video. Keep up the good work guys !
Great video! You guys cover a broad spectre of the motorcycling world!
Love the "On Any Sunday" voiceover reference! 😃
Greetings from Denmark
My favorite was the Scrambler episode with Ducati and Triumph, this is just as good, must have been massive fun. Love the videos! :) All the best! Cheers! :)
As always another awesome video! You guys always produce high quality and enjoyable content, especially the MC garage. Easily the best channel for motorcycle related information. Keep it up!
And here I thought motorcycle ice racing was only a thing for crazy scandinavians. Great video, added to the bucket list along sand beach racing and trials riding.
Love the videos dudes. Keep up the good work.
I really appreciate you guys keeping the good stuff up! I've been a fan since Ari still had dreads :D
I live in southern Wisconsin and I've never ridden and I really want to!
Great show, as always guys. You are a pleasure to watch with your superb riding skills, personable presentation, diverse adventures, and excellent video production values. Thanks to you and your video production team for the good work!
Great episode. Looked like a lot of fun on the ice!
That looked an absolute blast. Loved it.
Wow this is by far the best motorcycle channel on CZcams.
You, guys, are awesome...
That was amazing! Loved it!
Great video guys! A special breed of crazy!!
Love the outside the box bike vids. Anybody can review a FZ09 like a drone, but very few publications have fun doing oddball stuff. And it is 100x more interesting
why does Zack always get to go out and do the fun stuff man?? let the man Ari have some fun too ya'll! much love.
congratulations on your doing so well on a ice track with a BIKE!!!
You guys are seriously crazy i really like your enthusiasm 😎
I have been watching you guys for like 6 months now... And i think you deserve million subs.. Peace ✌
Wow, didn't know this was a thing. One more added to the bucket list
EXACTLY my comment on a different video called Ice drifting Yamaha Honda Motocross or something ...The two guys on that one even made it look more fun! No water ...ice with snow on top and they are BLAZING!
I live in Minnesota and I'll definitely be checking out ice racing this winter but don't know of too many that are local
Best channel on the tube
love OTW! You guys should cafe racer some old crapy bikes and a roadkill style trip!
Great episode.
another great show guys! up here in Canada the local ice race is called the "Numb Bum" hehe
Hey @ Motorcyclist Magazine - Speedweekend on ICE - in Sweden next weekend - 24-25/2-23
U guys motivated the adventure guy in me 😁😁😁 thanks bros
keep up the work, I didn't know there was ice racing in the states. I thought it was only in Europe, I know better now.
longer episodes please!
That looks terrifying and fun at the same time.
keep up the good work guys, please keep making videos
That was awesome 💪💙
This video makes me want to get a dirt bike again.
Looks like a lot of fun!
Great stuff guys!
This Probably the best channel in you tube
Dude this looks Fun as Hell man!
Great video!
the ice stuff looks gnar! keep making videos!
Wtf is gnar?
I'll have another gnar means gnar
I couldn't watch that until I got a fuzzy blanket to wrap up in.
great vid!!!
Epic fun!
Nice!
Wow, well done! It would take me years to race on ice.....I mean it is ice, right!
All comments?? Every single one on every vid? Loving the show.
Oi!! Im from Wisconsin and that comment offencive but very true
Currently -5 in Wisconsin right now. I agree
Great bike for a frozen lake.
yeahhhh kx250f fot the win!!
Sick!
I think ice racing is the best,
in that case it appeared to be a little to warm.
In Sweden they even "build" tracks with ice, apparently it's possible to lower the water level of the sea while it's freezing and the ice than lays itself on the bottom of the lake which makes not flat.
i want a job with you guys looks like so much fun
this video is very inspiring. nice vid.
India.
KTM 390.
Great video! You guys have to good content for your views/subscribers, easily my favorite youtube motorcycle channel! (and im subscribed to most of them) :P
Over 100 degrees here in Australia atm... Actually felt little cooler watching this vid.
Can you explain what caused the crankshaft to break?
6:47 classic kawa
Nice bike
hey, a suggestion, iron butt rally's rides, or charity or endurance races. maybe there something there to look into.
Thanks for the great video. I'd love to try this someday, but we just don't get cold enough weather anymore.
This video also proves that 250Fs are expensive ticking time bombs. Used ones are Russian roulette.
Honestly the new ones are bulletproof like 2016 and up. My cousin races Gncc and motocross. He had 200 hours on it before he had to fix the head.
subbed hopefully you can feature more of the supermoto theme here.
That's a special kind of crazy! :::fist bump:::
Oh wow, how come I never heard of this? And I live in Canada
Hey, does that kawa's tires work well in the mud?
Yup, love this channel, only wish there was more content. Keep it up guys. Come and visit us on the Isle of Man one day - Iast week of May and the first week of June is a good time!
How did the crankshaft break? Is it from the shock when you were falling?
So Funny, I want to do same thing on my KLX250.
Some Top Gear shit right there!
How about these tires for a winter commute??? could I go to work year around on my bike....lol
nice
should do more for people that dont have a lot of money. ive seen the "get into motorcycles for under $1000" and "best bike for under 10k" but id like to see more. maybe get another person to join you guys?
I wish, someday you could come to the Himalayas (Nepal)
at 7:45, what make and model is the motorcycle on the far left? looks really nice!
so when you guys where on the other chennel of on two wheels you had that CBR250R and i know you went to a special mecanic and al but i cant find that episode anymore, where is that video? or are you guys going to reupload it on this channel
crazy
Too cold? With all the water. That would take the fun rite out of it.
I'd like to try that
Please review the new MV Agusta F3 675 I'm really interested in buying it for the road I want see a professional review. Make it happen please
How did the crank shaft brake
Well clearly the logical nex step here is either flat tracking, of heading farther north and rippng a couple snow bikes in the powder. Check out Snowtrax's latest video here on youtube to see what you'd be in for.
what camera are you using
I live in Northwest Iowa, could you find me set of tires to combat spreader sand and pot holes?
How about a cross-publication race / challenge between you guys and a Cycle World duo like Hoyer & Canet?
Smart money would be on you two.
But they'd probably never except anyway.......
Hello from Minnesota -- the colder (and better) state next door to Wisconsin. We cordially invite you to come ride with us in the 68th annual I-Cycle Derby in Minneapolis, on January 1, 2016. It's a rally style event that is held on the first day of every year, regardless of weather -- 20 below? Wear an extra layer. 20 inches of snow? TKC-80's might help. Ice? Studs, of course. This year it will likely be a balmy 25 (El Nino), so t-shirts and a mesh jacket are fine. BTW, the entry fee is only $20, and it includes coffee -- well within the mag's budget. You could probably even ride here and turn it into a road trip. I think there's a video in this somewhere.
are those handguard warmers, specific for bikes? or from four wheelers>
+ombra306 i think hand warmers like that are universal
What would have caused the crank to break?
anyone know the episode when they race little old honda 2 stroke
shit this looks awesome fun I'm from nz can't believe there is this much grip on ice
this is why i ride 2 strokes. they were just builkt better back then.
