  • Studying in Germany doesn't guarantee that one will have a job after the graduation. If you study one of these useless degrees in Germany the chance of unemployment is quite high. Therefore, future students need to pick their major very carefully if they want to have a prosperous future in Germany.

    1. Humanities (esp. history)
    2. Religion
    3. Linguistics and German Studies (Also English studies/American studies)
    4. Literature
    5. Politics/Political Studies
    6. Archeology
    7. Social work/Social science
    8. Sociology
    9. Fine arts
Basically all humanities degrees. The absolute disrespect that this video has for the humanities majors is sad. A question she asks towards the end is "why go to college to study fine arts, why not do an online course" ... unfortunately this is the product of toxic capitalism where there's no space for the arts anymore.
To anyone reading this, you do what you want to do. Follow your passions. I know unemployed engineers & also writers with literature majors who are doing great for themselves.

I think, it depends on what goals you have in life. If you are aiming to earn lots of money and live a materialistic lifestyle, you definitely shouldn't consider the humanities. But if you instead want to question the problematics in modern society or dig into you're passion on a academic level, a degree in philosophy or history may be the right thing. There will always be a job for those in the humanities, even if it isn't very well pain.
Therefore I think it's wrong to call these subjects useless. It really depends on what you want to get out of you're professional life.

Very good advice indeed for any country. Unless one has enough financial resources to last a life time without a serious income follow what she says. Expanding one’s outlook, knowledge of the world etc. can be done on your own time, if you want a family, a home and a retirement that isn’t in poverty focus on areas that lead to productive areas of the economy. The humanities have always been meant for the wealthy not the poor and middle class, they just don’t want to tell you that.

You might be a bit too money obsessed.
Philosophy might not offer many jobs openings these days but we need those people, and we should have some philosophy classes as a part of requirements for graduation. There are a lot of clueless people that could use some philosophy or social science classes. You need people with PhDs to teach those classes and do research in those areas.
An example, my brother studied Political Science and now works for Morning Star as a Data Analyst. They prefer to hire Social Science degree people and teach them financial stuff themselves.
As far as literature, I don't know. These days anyone , even an idiot can publish a book. Do we really want more people like that? Wouldn't you prefer to read a book from someone that has a passion for it or education for it. I've just checked up on some Russian writers. Dostoevsky left his engineering career to be a writer.
I would have to disagree with you on most of these.
Yes, you might be right if your primary, or the only, goal is to just make as much as money as you can. And even then that money is not a guarantied. Also, not everyone cares for, or can do, some of the high paying jobs. Not everyone can be a doctor or an engineer. Some people can only succeed in these studies you consider useless.
As I said, you might be a bit too money obsessed.
    And art also takes training.
Another US example, decades ago everyone here kept saying the US will need more nurses, more engineers, more people in IT fields, more accountants. But eventually these fields were over-flooded with people in these fields, and many IT and engineering jobs were outsourced to Asia. Now some of these people are working low paying jobs and jobs unrelated to their fields. Many of them had to settle for lower paying jobs.
I have meet very young and very old engineers working as baristas. The young engineers were too inexperienced, so nobody wants to hire them. Which is sad and funny. How are they to get experience if no one wants to give them jobs. The old engineers were too experienced and asked for too much money. Why pay someone $100,000, or more, a year for a great work, when you can pay someone in Asia $30 to $50 an hour for a good-enough-to-sell product.

If you are a foreigner in Germany, you end up in finding different pateerns of thesis and you want to know the university rules. For that you need lawyers. Economy and Education are two separate worlds. They are not connected to each other. I am a programmer. Good programmer would never teach programming, because you can make better money outside teaching. But teacher of history cannot have job outside teaching. So education exists in order to provide jobs for potentially unemployed people. And you need to know this before doing any degree. However it's not German problem. This problem exists everywhere.

First of all, I would like to thank you for your efforts in this video - it was useful to know these things and see the point of view of a person with a lot of experience.
However, I must strongly disagree with the point of view of studying art. I have a degree in art and I can say that it was very, very useful for me and it was also a great experience. Education in this field is important not only because it sets your mind to a certain frequency, but also because you meet people in this field, you have the opportunity to complete great projects under the guidance of experienced and experienced teachers, you exchange so much with people who are also artists. All of these things are very important for finding a job later.
Also, since I worked as a graphic designer and was on the other side - that of the employer, I must say that every time we had to hire someone to join our team, it was always very recognizable not only which candidate has studied art and design, but even which university he or she graduated from because of the level of education itself.
There are many people who can do well without completing such an education, and perhaps it is even better for them not to enter the academic system, but there are many for whom this is a great experience and also very useful.
And last but not least - yes, you can do your art and be as creative as you want, no matter what other job you have, but the level of satisfaction and growth that comes with creativity when you do it every day is more likely to be higher. When you work in another field, you can lose a lot of energy for something that has no value to you and may not be as satisfying as doing art. If you are an artist, this is usually not a job, it is a vocation and you want to put all your efforts into it.
I'm sure it's a very personal matter, I'm just concluding it with my own feeling about it, and also with all the people I know who are also artists. Those I know are artists, but they have other jobs, they are often unhappy and dissatisfied.
In Germany I see daily job offers for graphic designers for example (although this is different than art itself, but it usually comes with a similar degree) and all of them require education in the field. So I definitely wouldn't call it exactly useless:)

    • @sujanamahim4046
      @sujanamahim4046 Před 2 lety +4

Yes I completely agree. I think it was very stereotypical of her to dismiss fine arts as useful subject. Fine arts is not just one thing, lots of different forms of arts and design is included in it. You also can't make design if you have no knowledge on art. And doing a course on Google is not the solution for anything. If it was this easy people could take course on engineering and become a professional. You can't just be creative. Art is not all talent, many years of practice, dedication and techniques need to put together. It's impossible if you're studying some other subject, doing some other job and trying to continue art at the same time. It will called a hobby then.

Sorry, but what you're saying is plain wrong. The unemployement rate among humanities graduates is 2.8% in Germany.
Employers prefer humanity graduates over engineers and scientist for jobs requiring communicative and cooperative skills.
It is true that the entry is harder and often in a completely different direction than your subject, but due to the unique skill to seek knowledge broard and look for the bigger picture, rather than specializing on detailed subjects like scientists, humanities graduates find their way often into management positions.
If you study a language for example you might be employed in coordinating relations with foreign customers and companies. A friend of mine studied Japanese literature and now works at Mitsubishi in Düsseldorf.
Politicians and parties employ politics graduates to analyse the situation, also comapnies that work with the governmental sector of difficult states. How do investors asses political risks?

Every degree is exactly as useful as every other degree.
A degree is merely verification of being a knowledgeable person.
Some job titles say "a degree is less valuable than work experience"
Others say a degree is everything.
It doesn't matter. Because you need the knowledge regardless of whether you hold the degree or not.
Music degrees are considered useless. Musicians don't go to school for a degree. They go to school to be disciplined in their chosen skill.
And most importantly of all, don't make your decision based on how much money you'll make.
First, drop out rates are high because people with this mentality bite off more than they can chew and usually end up picking a competitive career anyways.
But if that's what you actually want to do, regardless of how much it pays, you should do it.
If your dream job is delivering food on a bicycle merely because you love cycling that much, by all means, go do it.
You could study fitness training and sports nutrition purely just to further your efficiency at cycling.
Everybody is so obsessed with the end result and the job they're hoping for that they forget the entire point of going to college in the first place

I think you could consider privilege as the premise for that argument with pursuing only what you love, utility is important regardless and so, yes theres some professions more useful to society than the other.

Just because someone is studying archeology in Germany doesn't mean that they have to work in Germany. Archeologists work all over the world.
Theology students need to know the languages you mentioned in order to understand the original texts of the Bible, etc. Perhaps this knowledge is also useful when there are new finds of ancient writings.
Why do you have to be an artist when studying art?
Some people study a particular subject out of passion, not to make money.
I nevertheless agree with you on many points. There are not many good jobs in these areas.

Actually archeologists have good chances to get a job at bigger construction companies as they have to examine if they find artefacts while building

Archaeologist here, due to the building boom we have a skill shortage and you get hired from the spot (when you're not a sissy who's afraid of hard work that is).

      Then the economy is fucked.
I won't see that just the sheer amount of pipelines being build for hydrogen is enough for a generation.
