    Everybody’s welcome to the Queendom.

  • @Einyen
    @Einyen Před 4 měsíci +37

Björk was in the audience here on Iceland, from the KEXP article about the concert:
"The room was insanely packed as Aurora took the stage. Even the legendary Björk was in attendance, solidifying that, yes, this artist is a big fucking deal (yeah, I freaked out a little bit too). By no surprise, Aurora lived up to the hype."
This concert was on Nov 8th 2018 (7.5 months before HAIK), and just 7 weeks earlier (Sep 28th 2018) her 2nd album was released (technically an EP) "Infections Of A Different Kind (Step 1)", and all of the songs in this concert except Runaway was from that EP.
Queendom is definitely for everyone, and it has also become a major LGBTQIA+ song for her, where she often waves the rainbow flag on stage while performing it. When it was released she also casually mentioned in an article that she is bi (bisexual AND bilingual as she joked in a live stream). Here are some quotes from her:
"Queendom is about celebrating all the differences in us. It's about celebrating the women and the children and animals and the men also. The quiet ones and the introverts, where they can sing and be seen. It's about the shy people and the lonely people and I hope it can be a place where we can come and be lonely together and then not be lonely anymore. Queendom is a place for all of us."
""Queendom is for everyone that hasn't been respected. I'm a feminist because I'm a woman, it's as easy as that. But homosexuality was an even bigger inspiration to the song than feminism. It was after I visited Brazil and some places where I realized the political status around same sex love was really bad. I just thought to myself okay, the world sucks, so I'm going to write this song and make a new world for us.""

@@rebeccaburnell9319 Well, she performed at least twice with Katy Perry in the audience in 2015 and 2016...
Katy Perry tweeted about Aurora and the Runaway music video in March 2015, only 5 days after the music video premiered: "Finally. New music that makes my ❤a flutter. Check this 17 yr old angel". You can still find that old tweet. Then she came to her concert in LA later in 2015 and at least once in 2016 and met Aurora back stage.
Here is a funny conversation about it from an Aug 2016 Norwegian radio interview with Aurora and the guitarist Odd Martin (from the Murder Song performance at Nobel):
Aurora: Because we had just landed in L.A. the day before, and were very jetlagged and tired. And... and we performed very late at night. I remember I slept before... right before we went on stage. So we quite out of it.
Odd Martin: It was then you thought you saw Johnny Depp in the audience.
Aurora: Yes, I was very tired.
Odd Martin: And then you said it on stage. And then afterwards like... imagine if it was actually Johnny Depp.
Aurora: Now they have... so it would have been really bad to hang him out. And it so happened that Katy Perry was sitting there. And tried to hide herself. And then I point around where she is sitting, and this I also thought about afterwards, Oh no, because she tends to come and see us occasionally when we play in L.A. So then I thought, oh no. I thought like, I hang her out as well, and then she gets stressed. Oh!
Host: Yes, there is a lot you have to think about. I just have to say this: There are not many artists here in the studio who say that: "Katy Perry is usually there when I play in L.A." You are actually the first Aurora, who can like come up with such name dropping on Radio102. That... That is... That is a bit special. But Katy Perry has been mentioned in so many contexts when it... when it comes to you. Have you met her? Haven't you spoken?
Aurora: Yes, a couple of times. She's really likes the band, and she's very kind. She's just a woman who seems like she's really likes music. And when she finds someone she likes, then she likes to go to the concerts. And I think that's really, really cool.
Odd Martin: She were first to see us in... the first time we played in L.A. Then it was like: Oh, Katy Perry is coming. And then she came again then, the last time she was there. So she's obviously a big fan of Aurora. So that is...
Aurora: And it was very, very fun.

Aurora live always makes her personality shine. She's always performs at a "10" when she is live, but dare I say that she takes it to an 11 when she's done Lollapalooza's. Especially Chile or Argentina or Brazil. All of those are a must see performance filled with Aurora energy. Aurora is soooooo adorable.

This show was the "perfect storm". It is a combination of so many factors to make it such an exceptional show. Aurora band mates are always exceptional, she surrounds herself with extremely talented people, that being said, these band mates have all moved on to other adventures, other than Magnus who is still involved in some aspects of her career, occasionally performing with her still. He never saw himself as a drummer, he identifies mostly as a music producer and he is damn good at both. Silja moved on to a solo career, we all miss her harmonies with Aurora, but, Aurora has awesome new backup singers, guitarist and drummer.

The other KEXP concert you found was from 3 months after this one on Feb 14th 2019, when Aurora was on a US tour and visited the KEXP radio station in Seattle. The guitar is a 6 stringed bass, a squire VI
    Kexp
    Churchyard:
Like in “It Happened Quiet”, this was also inspired by domestic violence.
I know some wonders what she mean by Churchyard, it’s the same as cemetery/graveyard. In Norway we call it “kirkegård” which is directly translated into churchyard.
    Gentle Earthquakes:
““Gentle Earthquakes” in a title was originally inspired by an org*sm, I think org*sms are just the most beautiful things to ever exist in this world and it should be filled with just love and joy ‘cause it’s a beautiful gift that has been given to mankind. I was thinking about something that is so powerful and big that it created a gentle an earthquake. Originally that song was inspired by s*x and it was very beautiful, it was a beautiful song.
But then I changed it; I don’t often change my mind with songs, especially when I write about things that are so wonderful as s*x. But then I changed my mind and started writing about an entirely different thing. And it became a song that has to do with the female empowerment when a woman decides to leave a toxic place or a toxic man in her life or of course another toxic woman. It’s kind of that empowering song, it became a really empowering thing. Of course, s*x can also be a beautiful and empowering thing but now the song is about when you make a decision for yourself in life that is very hard to make but you do it anyway and you stay string and brave and you change things for yourself for the better! And I just imagined that when you made this big decision it made such a great impact that around you you created a tiny little earthquake!”
    AURORA
    All is Soft Inside:
This song is a reflection on the speaker's emotional vulnerability amidst a world that can feel hard and unforgiving.
    Forgotten Love:
"Forgotten Love is a song I wrote about how when we choose to fall in love with someone, either a partner or even just the love you have for a friend, we know the risk it takes. How much it would hurt if we would lose this person who we love this much." AURORA
In this song she also uses her own made up emotional language😊
    Queendom:
"Queendom is about celebrating all the differences in us. It's about celebrating the women and the children and animals and the men also. The quiet ones and the introverts, where they can sing and be seen. It's about the shy people and the lonely people and I hope it can be a place where we can come and be lonely together and then not be lonely anymore. Queendom is a place for all of us." AURORA

Magnus also from way back, but I’m unsure he was with her on the first album, maybe was, but didn’t become her producer until the second, I think; the other two I don’t think are regulars with her, or at least not all the time like the others, I’ve never seen them before.

That guitar that he plays is actually a 6-string bass. I think the first one was made in the 60s. John Lennon played one at times. It has lighter strings than a bass, but it's tuned down an octave from a guitar.

This one is a joy 😊. Watched it a bunch! At this point clearly comfortable performing, which she wasn't earlier in her career. That being said, her set (another one with a full band) Live on The Honda Stage, is another great one. Has some of the best live versions with songs from her first album in my opinion. I really like her acoustic/stripped sets a lot, but with a full band, KEXP and Honda Stage are the ones I return to the most.

This was my first experience with Aurora. I'd been subbed to KEXP for many years, and the thumbnail for this concert caught my eye when it was uploaded. I watched it, and Aurora has been my favorite musician/human since that moment. Churchyard, Gentle Earthquakes, All Is Soft, and Forgotten Love are some of my favorite songs from Aurora, and this concert is still my favorite live performance of all of those songs. This is a really special concert. I might even enjoy it more than Nidarosdomen.

12:35 Correct, there is no bass in this entire performance. That is a Bass VI you’re seeing/hearing. In this instance it is a Squire Bass VI. Definitely one of my favorite and coolest instruments out there.

    • @skylineindie
      @skylineindie Před 4 měsíci

30:37 not quite… while there’s surely some effects happening (reverb etc) it’s not in the way you’re thinking. The Bass VI is kind of a bass, but not. The body of a Fender Jaguar guitar with a neck that is longer than a baritone guitar but shorter than a traditional bass. Tuned like a guitar (EADGBE) but an octave down. What it is not: a 6 string bass (tuned BEADGC). They are totally different. The Bass VI sits in this really nice in-between space so it can go quite low like a bass but also sing like a guitar (sans effects pedals.) Everybody from the Beatles to The Cure have used them. They’re notoriously problematic instruments but if you can get a good setup done on the bridge, they’re awesome.

Ane Brun played "All Is Soft Inside" on acoustic guitar and sang for Aurora and her bandmates in the HAIK documentary (in the building I think Aurora said looked like it might be a museum, as they approached it to enter), and then Aurora sang it to the audience in the forest concert, too. 👍
Impossible for you to keep track of it all! You're being exposed to multiple Aurora songs in one go, doing these longer videos! One of the trade-offs of discovering exciting music in long-format exposures like this. But so few reactors dive into long-format videos for reacting to - it's sure a treat to see stuff like this "with" another person who's appreciating the music (I haven't seen this KEXP Iceland video before, for example).
Edit: the chorus to All Is Soft Inside reminds me SO MUCH of upbeat/dancy bits that occasionally showed up in Sarah McLaughlan's early stuff...
(I lost track of McLaughlan's music after about 1997 so I don't really know if any of her 21st century stuff bears any resemblance to what I'm thinking of)
