Home Automation, in the current state that it is, is everything but for lazy people. Its a second, part-time job you do, just so you can have light when its dark. Its harder than conventional houses, not more convenient. It's only for people who actually like to tinker with stuff and are technically inclined.

Hi Jonathon. I found your channel via the video series about your visit to Shenzhen, and I've just finished your whole 28-episode SuperHouse series. They're very informative and I learned a ton. I'm about to build a new house myself, so there are a lot of your techniques that I'll be able to implement. Thanks a ton! I'll be looking forward to your future uploads.
One comment about your videos. Your camera does a great job keeping the background (bench, bookcase, etc.) in focus, but this means your face is usually out of focus. You might try setting a fixed focus for your talking head shots, or turning on face tracking if your camera has it. I waited till the last video to mention this, hoping it would be fixed at some point along the way, but alas...

I agree the more home control can do autonomously the better and reliable human presents detection is key to achieving that.
The talk brought home to me one of my own limitations: While I'm great at using technology to solve problems, I'm not so good at recognizing novel problems on my own. In particular, the thought process in the talk about what a door is and is not, or should be, was very enlightening. My primary mode is for someone else to mention a problem, then solving it. As if I need problems to be dangled in front of me, rather than discovering them on my own.
In my hobbies, this results in way too many "me too" projects. I usually commit bug fixes, not create new features. On the bright side, it does encourage me to do things like answer questions on StackExchange or Reddit.
It seems clear to me I should improve in this area. I'd really like to see more of your open-ended thought (and questioning) processes in action, before the hardware design starts, or even before hardware becomes part of the solution.
In some areas, home automation may allow to give appearance of activity even when the place is empty, and deter home intrusions.
I know someone who has this when they go on vacation

I have been a bit of a student of man-machine interface/interactions ever since my Engineering Uni days (like nearly 40 years ago now). These are some very interesting ideas. :) (Not that I really need any more ideas for projects, have got enough currently, but hey, this video is going to plant more seeds for sure. LOL)

Interesting stuff Jonathan. You talk of electric blinds and curtains and I remember as a child, in the late 60s (last century) sitting at the window imagining and working out how curtains could be opened and closed remotely. (It was my job to do that daily). I later became an engineer and then got diverted into big boys toys and never followed up. Thanks for persisting. Ignore the ‘we’ve seen this before comments’ - your on a good track... rather than being critics of people that are out there doing positive stuff it would be better if they got out there and used their skills for good.
Looking forward to seeing your automated curtains - I wonder how close they are to what I drew out as a child over 50 years ago?

I was wondering about the IR rays and whether they are harmful to the eye with long-term exposure and that gave me the idea of wearing protective glasses that could also be used in the remote operation of devices such as the drone by tracking eye movement. That is, of course if the tracking can be done without damaging the eye.
Ron, I've not measured the amount of IR from the sun but I'd expect a lot more from the sun. From the wiki page: "In terms of energy, sunlight at Earth's surface is around 52 to 55 percent infrared (above 700 nm), 42 to 43 percent visible (400 to 700 nm), and 3 to 5 percent ultraviolet (below 400 nm)". I'm not sure how much reaches the eyes

Your videos are great!
In your videos you often explain your projects very detailed. But I miss the part 'How to setup a MQTT broker on an Rasperry Pi and how to work with the signals coming through ethernet cabel into the MQTT broker'. It would be very helpful if you make one or two vodeos about these topics.
