    Carmen Sandiego, the gentlewoman thief who stole our hearts (along with our national treasures) in the 80s and 90s, is back with an all new Carmen Sandiego reboot on Netflix starring Gina Rodriguez. Carmen Sandiego has a history going much further back however, beginning with the iconic game from Broderbund. The edutainment classic spawned a multimedia franchise, including additional games like Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego and Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, as well as an animated series, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego, and of course, the legendary Carmen Sandiego game show on PBS, simply known as Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego.
    Hosted by Greg Lee and Lynn Thigpen as the Chief, the Carmen Sandiego game show cemented her status as an all-time icon, especially when you hear the Carmen Sandiego intro with the amazing Carmen Sandiego theme song performed by Rockapella. For Carmen Sandiego, 2019 will be a new chapter in her life of crime, thanks to the new Carmen Sandiego animated series on Netflix with Gina Rodriguez and Finn Wolfhard, and a brand new Carmen Sandiego origin. The cartoon has an all-star voice cast and pays tribute to all aspects of Carmen San Diego lore in the medium of animation, and as we scoured every trailer, clip, and scene to figure out where in the world she is, we learned a lot more about Carmen’s world, and our own.

    Carmen in the cartoon was always a hero in her own way. She "adopted" two bit criminals into her vile, taught them her rules and strictly enforced her rules. She had no qualms with dumping you in jail if you messed with her. By doing this, she was actually reducing the overall crime rate and preventing more severe crimes which could actively harm people at large. Sure, there's little doubt more then a few people got fired at first for "negligence", till it reached a point where Carmen was so recognized that being stolen from by her may have even come to be a slight badge of honor. Oh I had something good enough for the world's greatest thief to steal!

    Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego was the best one in the spinoffs because of 5 reasons.
    1. It had more plotlines and stories to tell including Carmen's unknown past near the end of the series.
    2. History and Geography were fun and easy to remember for years to come.
    3. Had one of the best villains Maelstrom voiced by the infamous Tim Curry.
    4. The theme song was more catchy compared to Rockapella's.
    5. And it was one of the many most-watched Fox Kids shows along with Spiderman, X-Men and Eek.
    FUN FACT: The characters Zach and Ivy from WOEICS return in the new Netflix series with a different look and attitude compared their previous counterparts. They were originally voiced by soon-be-iconic voices Scott Menville best know as Robin from Teen Titans/TTG and Jennifer Hale who voiced Black Cat from Spiderman TAS and Naomi Hunter from Metal Gear Solid. Also the Chief is voiced by Robert Bumpass who's Squidward in SpongeBob which most might recognize his voice from. Along with so many iconic and legendary voice actors/actresses who were various character's through out the series.
    And oh Uncle Phil was the voice of Carmen's father in the 2 Part series finale.

    Have no issue with her currently being the protagonist on the new series. She's Lupin-esque, but it fits with previous lore since in the old show she was an Acme Detective before founding Vile. Here Vile might already be established, but we're still in the early days and she's still got her strong moral code. Even if she does join Acme in this series, it's still fine with me. The show can go anywhere it wants, but I see Carmen's ultimate goal being Taking over Vile and reorganizing it to fit her beliefs about crime.
    Also, just because I prefer the moralistic Carmen, I object to you referring to her as evil. Just because your a villain or antagonist, doesn't mean you're evil.

      Hhh I been scrolling through these comments seeing if anyone else saw the comparison to Lupin!

    • @SeleneDethly
      @SeleneDethly Před 5 lety +5

      @@LitoraLee Yeah, I;ve always been a fan of characters like Lupin or even someone like Captain Cold from DC. Both are professional criminals with very strong morals. Lupin is of course closer to this Carmen becuase of the whole 'stealing from other theives' is a large part of his shtick.
      And while Cold isn't the type to steal from other villians, he IS the professional 'we don't kill anyone we're better then that' type. Anybody could just walk into a bank shoot it up and rob it, it takes a true craftsman and professional to get in and out with no casualities and likely never even tripping the alarm.
      Honestly the only thing I don't love about the Netflix series in its homaging Lupin is that Chase Devineaux is a FAR far cry from Zennigatta. While Both are obessed with catching their theives, Zennigatta isn't a complete dumbass like Chase is. He's dense, he's comic relief, but he's usually smart enough to realize that Lupin isn't always the biggest fish, and doesn't treat his comtemporaries like they're inferior.

    • @LitoraLee
      @LitoraLee Před 5 lety +1

      @@SeleneDethly That's the one thing about Lupin I'm a bit iffy on. I think Zenigata is a bit overplayed on his bumblimg cop aspect. Well there's definitely episodes that shows off his skills, there's a lot more episodes that I feel like he's only making a cameo than being a threat. Then again Lulin has like 300+ episodic episodes between 5 seasons, so it's more or less bound to happen.
      And while I completely agree with you that the detective in Carmen Sandiego has his ego too far up his *** to think about anything. I liked the dynamics between him n his assistant and the possible story arc he might have if a second season is in the work. Besides, a few times when his ego isn't in the way he actually seems like a decent detective.

    I grew up watching Carmen Sandiego and playing the games (at school). In the games, I thought she was mysterious and cool. The Fox tv show Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? was such a fun ride! I loved how they disguised education with adventure. But I must say, I love the latest reincarnation from Netflix best. It's a more fleshed out version of Carmen Sandiego. The 90's version will always be special to me, but I'm so glad they found a way to revive and freshen up the franchise for a new generation to enjoy :)

    I know this is old, but I swear!! The 1994 TV series changed my life like literally. It got me super invested with Geography and History that to this day, I am still a huge nerd when it comes to those topics. Seriously, I'm the worst in trivia pursuit with those questions. I just found so much interest with the world, and just had a passion for exploring it as a child. This show really means a lot to me. I never played the games since my family was super poor at the time, but I'll never forget those moments where I sat on the floor on Saturday morning watching Zack and Ivy in action. I recorded them all on VHS and watched them over and over again for years.

    I think that effectively that the new Netflix show is writing its own version a story has existed for decades. After all, it had quite a few call backs to the game show and computers i.e. Chase, Jules Argent, Chief, Zach, Ivy, the Sensei, Sara Bellum and quite a few VILE agents, and there were a few Easter eggs as well. I think what we will see is a modern twist on a classic where new fans and old fans can get behind it. In the computer games and game show, it was a clear right and wrong. Carmen was bad, and we, as the good guys, had to stop her. The television show became a bit more complex in a way showing us hints about Carmen's life and her moral code. Carmen was always in the gray area when it came to thefts especially on the tv show. She stole because she enjoyed the challenge of it. The one time the player challenged her to steal something without using technology and Carmen did just because it was an extra challenge. The only time she stole something with a purpose is when she was reunited things from her childhood that was about to be destroyed. Zach and Ivy never mentioned working with Carmen. In fact, they are teenagers to young adults when Carmen is active on Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego. Chase and Jules were actually her old partners in the computer game Carmen Sandiego Word Detective and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, respectively. My first memory of playing Carmen Sandiego is Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective.

    I was a bit too young to remember the TV show (although I did know about it). I grew up with the 90s computer games. They were fun, but the worst thing about them is when you put all the pieces together, find the thief, try to arrest them, but you lose the case because you forgot to click "Issue" on your warrant! If you've played the games, you know how defeating and frustrating that is! Everything else goes right, but without a warrant your arrest is unauthorized, and the thief goes free!

    I was really young when "Where in the World" aired, but I was exactly the right age to totally eat up "Where in Time". Even though it was only on for a couple of years, I have such fond memories of that show. It's amazing how much production went into a children's game show--the live action intro where Carmen summons the villains each time, the really cool set design with tons of neat lighting and smoke effects, all the cool graphics that were WAY ahead of their time, and that pulse pounding bonus round where they had to make their way through each of the time gates. I think it deserved to be a just a little more than a footnote in this video :P But overall, really cool recap!!

    I'd like to see a Carmen Sandiego VR game. Maybe follow the same detective structure as the original computer games, but instead of just getting the clues for the next destination, put in some hidden object elements. For example, maybe when you search a former hideout of the crook you're trying to find, you have to find a scrap of the flag of the next country they're going to. Or maybe pieces of the flag of their final destination.
    Another option might be to put elements from games like LA Noire so that when you're interrogating a witness, you have to notice when they're nervous. That plus finding a hidden VILE logo will indicate that you're talking to a henchman. In that case, the player would want to be more aggressive vs interviewing an innocent bystander who is afraid of being hunted down by VILE.

    If they want to keep the new audience (like me) keep her good. If you want to go back to her roots, have her defect and become bad (like maybe ACME does something to her friends, or they put her on a wanted list and she's officially being labeled as a criminal and that puts her on edge until she finally gets caught while trying to capture the real villain. so then she goes bad because of ACME treating her like trash) but then realizes (once again) that being bad is really bad for everybody and she becomes good again even if the world sees her as a criminal

I'd hate to imagine the series ending with her becoming a thief like in her previous incarnations, especially after all they've been through. She's better off as a Robin Hood esque thief.
