The trial of OJ Simpson captivated the United States and the world.
After nine-months, viewers in cities and towns across America waited on edge for the verdict: a verdict which drew reaction and opinions as diverse as the cultural fabric of the US itself.
They gathered in New York's Times Square, waiting to hear the outcome of what had been billed as the "Trial of the Century".
Reaction here to the acquittal of O-J Simpson drawing cheers from some, disbelief from others.
For some justice was served. For others, it was an example of a system flawed.
SOUNDBITE: "They proved that....I'm so happy. Yes! yes! yes!"
    SUPER CAPTION:Voxpop
SOUNDBITE: "I think that this is terrible that he is going to get away with this you know because I do believe that he did it and its just not fair."
    SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop
    SOUNDBITE:
"He's guilty. He's just got to live with himself, man. He knows he did it, the DNA is not racial. It doesn't see black and white it just sees that he was there and he did it. He's got to live with himself that's all."
    SUPER CAPTION: voxpop
Activist Jesse Jackson hopes the trial will open the discussion over race and violence.
SOUNDBITE: "During this period of atonement let us have a mood of soul searching and still crowd to stop the violence to stop the domestic violence. We hope that some lesson can be learnt from this and for those on either side of the verdict let this battle be a courtroom battle and not a street battle."
    SUPER CAPTION:Jesse Jackson, African-American Leader
Reaction even coming from the White House, with a presidential statement offering condolences to the families of the victims.
SOUNDBITE: "The jury heard the evidence and rendered its verdict. Our system of justice requires respect for their decision. At this moment our thoughts and prayers should be with the families of the victims of this terrible crime."
SUPER CAPTION:Mike McCurry, White House Spokesman
Across town at a domestic violence seminar, the cheers of some women were tempered by the sombre faces of others.
For many, the O-J Simpson verdict does not invalidate their cause.
SOUNDBITE: "The jury concluded that there was not enough evidence to convict OJ Simpson of murder. But this acquittal does not change the fact that domestic violence is an epidemic in this country and that domestic violence homicides occur every day."
SUPER CAPTION:Esta Soler, executive director for the Family Violence Prevention Fund.
In bars and cafes across America, the reaction was as varied and diverse as the racial fabric of the country.
SOUNDBITE: "I'm surprised by the speed, I'm surprised that they were able to come to a unanimous agreement in such a short time after having heard eight months of trial in what I think was a complex case."
    SUPER CAPTION:Voxpop
SOUNDBITE: "I was surprised at the verdict, I thought that the quick deliberation by the jury meant that they would have found him guilty, and I thought he was guilty to begin with."
    SUPER CAPTION:Voxpop
Americans watched as the fate O-J Simpson hung in the balance. But the deeper questions of race and domestic violence raised by the trial may be tried in the court of public opinion for years to come.

Why did they have to make a TV series The People vs OJ Simpson in 2017. I thought Oh God, not this again. His lawyers are in hell now. The victims are Ronald Goldman, Nicole Brown Simpson. and the story is beyond sad. Really sad. OJ's children lost their father and their mother. The person I feel sorry for is Ronald Goldman. A team of highly skilled liars were able to deceive a carefully chosen, predominantly black, jury into freeing the brutal murderer of two innocent people. When a celebrity murders two innocent people and leaves his blood at the crime scene, in his car, on his car, in his driveway, in his house, on his socks in his house, together with the blood of his victims, and then makes a getaway after failing a lie detector test miserably, and a jury finds that there was not enough evidence to convict him, then there is something very wrong with the US judicial system ! Johnny Cochran skilfully diverted the jury’s attention away from the facts by turning the focus away from the murders and on to a race issue. Police brutality in other unrelated cases influenced the jury, and Johnny Cochran gave the jury members the chance to “put a stop to this racism and brutality”, thus giving the jury members the chance to become US Superheroes : by freeing a brutal and vicious wife-beating double murderer ! 🤔 Members of the jury who would have delivered a “guilty!” verdict were persuaded during the deliberation to change their decision to “not guilty” by a dominant member who kicked-off the discussion by saying “I have never heard such a load of garbage in all my life”. However, the civil trial jurors saw this case differently by declaring him “liable / responsible” for the murders ! It is truly astonishing to me that some Americans even today still believe that Simpson is innocent ! The man is such a moron, that even after he committed a double murder, he decided to commit armed robbery with a team of helpers ! What depth of stupidity can any single person reach ?

I'll explain the oj trial was a miscarriage of justice but disproportionately blacks have had more miscarriages of justice. Rather you like it or not or rather black people like it or not the jury's verdict is final. You can never be charged criminally for the same crime. Lady justice is indeed not blind though it should be. Race money sex many things caused this verdict. I think black people wanted whites to know what it feels like to have your own huge misscarrage of justice. So you'd know how we felt. Now let me ask you if Zimmerman was black and he shot a White kid with tea and Skittles coming home in a hoodie while its raining got shot. You know you'd be angry especially if you have sons. We gotta start being honest with each other and say look we just want America to live up to what is written down on the constitution. We love America and the constitution but let her live up to her words on paper.

The OJ verdict (once in a lifetime) was meant to show how awful the legal system is when things like the Zimmerman verdict (several times a year) are the accepted norm.
If a white jury couldn't convict white cops EVEN with videotape, how on earth could you ever expect a black jury to convict a black superstar with something as abstract as DNA? While I do understand how DNA works, I dont understand how beating and kicking a man are not forms of assault. I also dont understand how shooting a child in the back of the head equates to probation (Latasha Harlins).
You are looking at the mirror and projecting the entirety of America. Try a little harder to understand the people being systematically oppressed. I wasnt completely shocked when I saw the Rodney King riots or the OJ verdict, but I was a suburban kid who had been listening to NWA records since the mid-late '80s. I kind of had an idea about the civil unrest that had been brewing. Perhaps that is why their music inspired congressional hearings.
I honestly think that OJ did do it, but I sincerely feel that his acquittal was justified as a means of civil disobedience.
If all of this was over your head, just put it this way...the Zimmerman case was a win for the globetrotters...the OJ case was that one time the generals got the "W."

It’s fascinating seeing these scenes... The reactions from different types of people and for different reasons.
Some reacted favorably based on the evidence presented., or disapprove based on how the defense twisted this double murder trial and made it all about racial injustice.
Others had favorable or unfavorable reactions solely based on race. Whites wanted Him guilty because in their minds He was a N!@@er who murdered two White people., and for Blacks they were rejoicing for what they perceived as Justice for a Black man being unfairly targeted in a White society.
