3 COMMON STRUGGLES WITH THE SERVE - And How To Fix Them

  • Here I show you 3 of the most common struggles I see players have on their serve, and some ways that I like to fix them.
    The serve can be one of the toughest shots to master, but it doesn't have to be. We know how important it is, yet I believe that it is the most under practiced shot!
    The 3 most common struggles I see players have are:
    0:00 - Intro
    0:42 - An inconsistent ball toss
    6:02 - A poor pre throw position
    10:52 - Gripping the racket to tightly
    Let me know if you've faced these struggles and how you managed to improve... or if there is anything else that you are struggling with!

    Brilliant video 👍 One of the best I have seen on this subject. Straightforward instructions. Very helpful for any player level. I like your smooth voice tone too, it allows me to concentrate better on your demos. I have some problems on my serve too. So if you do not mind I will send you a video link...? Keep it up 👍👍💪

    Great tips! As to the ball toss, I have modified my grip to grasp the ball only with the thumb and index finger, and to extend the other three out of their way. This means I have to simultaneously release only two of my five fingers, for better timing and reduced ball spin. I also find that the two finger grip helps me to maintain the "coke can lift" that you demonstrate in your toss drill, for a slow and relaxed lift driven by the shoulder muscles alone. Thanks.

      jacksonlar thanks for taking the time to watch... I really like the sound of your ball toss modification, sounds like another great way to improve the consistency, I’ll try that out tomorrow!!💪

    Such a great video and tips! You can tell you truly love to teach and you have worked with a lot of students! Thank you for taking the time to put this out there..especially love the self criticism on your own video bent elbow 😜 My biggest struggle has been consistency and rhythm but I’m on to something now that seems like going back to basics and keeping very minimal approach to serve.

    • @vectorthurm
      @vectorthurm Před 4 lety +2

      Here’s what I’m talking about..simply placing ball in easy spot and hitting it, all one motion. My thought is to gradually toss with straighter arm and get a bit higher with more shoulder turn load.

      Thanks for taking the time to watch it! I just watched your serve and it’s looking good... the basics are the most important thing to get right, so sometimes, stripping the technique back is a great way to move forward. Just in case you didn’t know... your target is over that net to your left 😜😁 Good luck, keep it up!

    • @KenFlanagan
      @KenFlanagan Před rokem +1

      @@TheTennisMentor it sounds so familiar and yet I just cannot place it. It sounds maybe Devon or Cornwall with a tinge of South African maybe or maybe living abroad but then you are very well spoken without sounding posh. Maybe military father?! Travelled. You are not lazy with your t’s and you pronounce your consonants. The accent isn’t heavy and you are quite deliberate with an even metre when you speak so I imagine you are well educated or just in instructional mode. Almost an English speaking international school abroad. Let’s face it not many people play tennis on the estates so maybe that’s a clue at least somewhere with good weather yet you aren’t that conventional either. Privately educated people often rely on their networks and push them front and centre in their work but you seem oddly singular self motivated and independently driven so that is usually a trait of a more middle class driven background and not someone who comes from money. All speculation of course but your accent reminds me of someone or something very particular and it’s a real conundrum. Sorry if it all seems quite random and the extrapolation seems a little personal. Thx best Ken

      @@KenFlanagan wow Ken… I wasn’t expecting such a detailed response but I love it!! I have grown up in and around Portsmouth with parents from Kent and Sussex. I was not privately educated, but loved school. My parents had multiple jobs to support me and my 4 brothers. I’d consider myself an introvert until I’m on a tennis court with a racquet in my hand and not natural on camera which is why you see a lack of conversation and empty courts around me (as that’s when I try to film!) I’m impressed with your analysis, are you a psychologist or something similar??

    • @KenFlanagan
      @KenFlanagan Před rokem +1

      @@TheTennisMentor wow thanks for that and I guess that does makes sense. Thanks for sharing that. I have worked in documentaries for a quite a while now and maybe that’s why I am slightly obsessed with identity and how we read people on camera with so little to go on. I guess we are all incredibly reliant on pattern reading and when certain patterns chime then we often aren’t aware consciously why that is. Especially when we extrapolate so much from so little. Anyway thanks so much for sharing and keep up the excellent work on your channel. Best K

    holding with the fingertip will cause the ball to spin. you need to keep the ball inside the pocket just to let it go...
