If you keep fresh fruit in your home, You may soon have a Fruit fly problem. No worries, Just place some of whatever is attracting them in a Styrofoam cup. Put cling wrap over the top, secure with a rubber band. Poke holes in the cling film with a toothpick. They clime in the holes & can't get back out. Works for me every time. Enjoy your fresh fruit without the pests like we do here in Florida year round.

Apple vinegar and a little dish soap in a bowl works too. They're attracted to the smell and when they touch the liquid they get stuck because the soap breaks the surface tension.

Stink bugs have been around a hell of a lot longer than 1996!! I was a teen in the 70's, and I remember having some stink bugs land around our house during their mating season, because we were next to an empty field with old trees.
Those plastic bottle traps work for any flying insect. You just have to look online to see what solution to put in the bottle to attract the flying insect you are trying to get rid of.

There are native species, yes, but they refer to the invasive brown marmorated stink bug from Asia which was discovered in Allen town, PA in 1996. It is a huge agricultural pest because they have no natural predators. They invade buildings and homes to over winter where their smell becomes a problem. They're a nuisance, but don't harm humans. They do a lot of damage to crops.

I had a German cockroach Prineville in my house, it became a pretty big problem in our town. I live in Canada so in January it got to -35 Celsius or -31F. I drained all of our water lines, opened the windows, turned on a bunch of fans to quickly spread the cold air around and left the house alone for a couple days. Turned the heat back on, it took a while day four the furnace to heat the house again, but I never saw another roach in my house. Easy fix if you live in Canada, chemical free.

      @connecticutwormsgardens Před 2 lety

Nobody said to kill a bat and FYI the reason bats eat so many mosquitoes is because there are that many mosquitoes. Bats will eat tons of other insects so if mosquitoes go missing the bats are not going to go hungry. Mosquitoes can spread over 40 different diseases, some which are lethal, to humans and animals. mosquitoes have no good purpose - the world would be a much better place without them.

Five gallon buckets make excellent mouse traps. Mice can't jump out when they get in there. We drill a couple of small 1/8 inch diameter holes - 180 degrees across from each other, about a 1/2 inch from the top. Then put a straight piece of coat hanger wire in the holes across the top. Bend the ends over so it will stay. Put the wire inside a 12 oz sturdy plastic bottle with lid and drill holes at the top and bottom of the bottle so the bottle will spin on the wire. Then put some peanut butter on the bottle. The mice will fall off the bottle when they go for the peanut butter. Actually you don't even need to do all that. We have found dead mice in the bottoms of plain empty 5 gallon buckets that never had a trap mechanism put on them and didn't even have any bait in them. I have put a few pieces of dog good and a teaspoon of peanut butter on the bottom of an empty 5 gallon bucket and caught mice only doing that!

The mouse trap can be done much easier. Use the rod in the center top portion with an empty soda can that spins on the rod. Cover the can with peanut butter, and move it to the center of the rod and bucket.
Use 2 ramps on either side of the bucket .
The mouse or rat climbs the ramp, jumps to the can to get the peanut butter, the can spins, and they fall into the bucket. 5 gallon bucket or larger.
You can let them go away from your house, or you can put water in the bucket, and they will drown.
I have used 2 of these for a year and a half, and have gotten rid of over 30 mice and rats.

I've been spending $5 per bag for fly traps. I feed the outside cats there's 4 regulars that come when I leave for work, and when I return. I normally don't have a problem, except with ants. But this spring 2022, the amount of flies was horrendous. I'd never seen so many flies. Those fly bags work. Just get a couple gallon Ziploc bags to put the full icky fly bag in, because they'll escape into the trash can if you are just using a couple trash bags to put it in. Larvae crawled out somehow. 🤢 Washed out the trash can. But yes they work. Never occurred to me to make a DIY fly trap.

Ladybugs for instance, are GOOD, they eat mites and other infestations. We do all have the Internet now so there is no excuse for not taking pictures of a critter and describing it in a search engine to learn more.
Just 4 decades ago, it was common for vehicles driven at dusk or at night to be COVERED with bugs, killed on the Windshield or front of the vehicle. Not anymore. I wonder how long it will be before it moves up the food chain to people? Probably not much longer.

Place a few bottle corks (new or used) in the bottom of fruit bowls or on top of soil in potted plants to deter fruit flies and gnats indoors; something about cork they don't like. For mosquitoes and spiders add a few drops of peppermint oil to cotton ball or soak a cork briefly in peppermint oil (add more oil as needed as it will eventually dry out and the scent will disappear) and place near doors and windows inside or just outside (peppermint oil can get pretty strong and make eyes water so often just outside doors and windows is better especially if a room is small or not well ventilated.)

When next having chicken , or kidneys ( works best ) save a bit for the base of the trap , cover the meat or offal , with a little water , place in sunnyest part of the yard - the bottle will need to be emptied regularly - 2-3 times a week . Place all the contents into a open furrow in your garden , allow the birds to come eat the maggots , if any , then cover over, allow nature to nuture your soil & help provide a more abundant crop next year .
Copper Penny's , can be used in fruit trees which have curly leaf - just 1 or 2 per fruiting tree , thereafter no more curly leaf , a much healthier tree , possibly an increase in the yeild - just remember to feed your trees as they need food , just as we do , providing it , brings in rewards .

Fire ant venom is very similar to a wasp's. But each individual has only a tiny amount. Individual bites really only itch pretty good. A hanfull of sting/bites are not a big deal. When they get you en masse is when you've got a big problem. Also, there is the nest you see bulging up from the ground, but there can be other exits around the vicinity of the main mound. It is amazing how fast they swam. Just put a stick down the nest and watch how fast the little demons cover it.

Obviously I can't give my experiences or I surely would. The truth is, - is that I would probably run
    out of memory !
I will only mention one of my latest 'friends' -
The Cockroach (only TWO syllables !).
    From underneath the door,
there was just enough room for Mr.& Mrs. roach to sneak in - in the middle of the real-late night.
American cockroach. Big ? Late that 'early morning' I looked over on the sill of our window - and I first thought it was some small animal; UMM, yeah,
this small nocturnal creature slowly lumbering along - for-an-insect, - was
    HUGE - ENORMOUS 😵😵
This winged behemoth was the size of a small compact automobile !
After losing it, it was suddenly flying (yes can you believe it !) across the living-room and then 'coming to rest' on our couch. They look like some kids small model aeroplane. I swear they are even BIGGER with their wings out, droning while they slowly bob and weave. Killing these monsters is no easy task,
    these things are 'tough' !
As one was moving about slowly on our living-room carpet - like a large, very tired predator at the end of a long night, - I came down on him like swinging a 4lb.
    carpenter's hammer - Sheee-it -
he just looked up at me and laughed at that. So be prepared with trying to dispatch them thinking it's just a simple matter to squish them; it isn't.

If you put your heater on the floor in the room you suspect you have them. Set on the floor behind the heater. They come running to the heat source. They will get to close to the heater, zap zap zap. Do that until you don’t hear anymore zaps. Then do this again in one week. Some could have had hatchlings. End of your problem. It words and is cheaper you don’t have to leave your home.

Molten aluminum has to be an incredibly expensive way to get rid of an ant hill. Lights, and chemical attractants may have the opposite effect from what you want because you may be pulling in more pests from the surrounding area. Set such traps away from the area you are trying to reduce the population. Extension agencies are in many counties throughout the US and are there not only for agricultural pest advice but for residential pest problems as well. The advise they give is based on research and often related to the conditions in your location.

We put down lines of that earth stuff all around every wall and piece of furniture we had as well as in between the mattresses on the bed, the diatomaceous earth works like miniature razor blades, it even took out flies, any bug that walks over it or lands on it will die on the spot. Million little slices on the body of whatever touches it, we use it for ants and everything now. Best ever. Kills cockroaches as well. We just cleaned up the powder all around except all the walls around. I even put it around the outside edges of my house, and now we have no bug issues. :)
