Give any car enthusiast the choice of an air cooled 993 or a Taycan. I’ll bet 9 of 10 choose the 993 and the main reason is that fan and engine sound in the back. I hope Porsche sells a ton of electric Taycans and Macans so they can keep making the glorious 911 GT3 RS and keep it normally aspirated. I love mine on the road and track. The sound of that Boxer engine at full throttle, especially on the track, is intoxicating.
The EPA range was measured by forcing the Taycan to stay stuck in 1st gear the entire time while in Sport and Sport+ modes. That's sort of like forcing a performance gas car to stay in 3rd gear for a MPG test on the freeway. The actual range of the Taycan is more like 280 miles.
You can relax. It's not. Porsche used the 2-cycle EPA test, which kept the car in 1st gear (~15 ratio) in the Sport and Sport+ mode tests. That's sort of like measuring the MPG on a performance gas car on the freeway while it's stuck in 3rd gear the whole time. Real-world reports of the Taycan range are more like 300 miles in good conditions.
Great down to earth sensible review. My daily drive is a Panamera, I'm also lucky enough to have a Boxster for a bit of fun. I have a Taycan on order but really can't decide whether to go ahead or get a 992 and keep my Panamera. My drive to work is only 10 miles and I have a charge point at home and work, so I can do most journeys electric which I do. I love the electric mode so quiet and restful. Really suits the Panamera but I also love the sound of the Petrol engine with the sports exhaust and no range anxiety. Occasionally I do 300 mile journeys and the charge network is lousy. I was surprised how much I like electric driving but I still enjoy the petrol engine. I guess I have the best of both worlds in the Panamera. So to Taycan or not to Taycan?
Not sure if you made a decision yet or not but I just dropped in to tell you that I can relate to at-least half of your dilemma. I have a 991 and find myself at the cross roads of trading to a new 992 or Taycan. Love the visceral feel of a high revving NA engine (I got mine right before they went Turbo charged on 991.2) but a recent test drive in a Tesla performance car has me wondering how far up the price list do I want to go chasing similar performance in a Gas engine. In summary Tesla blew me away and I have never experienced such thrust in any vehicle. Having said, Im curious to hear your opinion on this range anxiety and do you feel other Ev owners share the same sentiment. Reason why I ask is that I can see myself getting stressed if lets say I had 100Km or so left and im equal amount of KM away from a charge station.
@@mromar2724 I think I'm nearly there on the decision but could still change. Like you I tried the P100D determined if I'm honest to dislike it but the performance blew me away. I get sick of hearing electric lovers knocking Porsche and vice versa but I just couldn't live with the quality or lack of with Tesla. My Panamera is gorgeous. Yes it has every conceivable extra and yes they cost a fortune but it never fails to put a smile on my face. As far as performance goes, I really can't play very much with the Panamera or Boxster too many bloody cameras so I don't need more. I just love the orchestra from 0 to 60. When I drove the P100D in a spirited fashion in winter with lights, AC and seats on I realised I would get about 160 miles. With one yes one charge point within 50 miles of me and one on my usual 300 mile return journey there was no way. It's a little better now with 2 points but still not possible. So for now the Taycan is out. Im keeping the Panamera and getting a 992. In a couple of years time I will look again at the infrastructure and maybe go electric but I can see me getting another Panamera. I'm also not convinced electric is the future. Our national grid will only support another 100k cars without serious investment and then there's the cobalt problem. If I were you I'd keep the 991 and get a 992 daily or Panamera. You will never ever go out to it and regret it.

So glad to see Porsche dedicating themselves to electrification. I can’t say I’m a fan of artificial motor noise, though, and it’s especially absurd that Porsche charges $500 for the option.

What a great video. That is one great car. No way (if I had the money) would I consider a Model S when I can get this. Not that there is anything wrong with the Tesla, but come on with the Taycan. The 4S would be enough that I wouldn't consider upgrading to the Turbo and Turbo S models.
@@devinbender8428 That's the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S. To be fair, Tesla does beat Porsche on range still, but that's not really why you buy the Taycan. You buy it to buy an electric sports car.
How can it be better than a 911 when they are two totally different cars, one weighs 4400 lbs and the other 3330 lbs?! This should be, better than a Panamera Hybrid?
Tommy they both have 4 seats, similar driving position, a frunk, power (Taycan seems to have more in most cases) etc. Thing is a 911 is a “daily” sports car. A Taycan is a sports sedan
It comes down to which you would actually buy. The reviewer and his cameraman agreed they would go for the Taycan instead of the 911. "Better" is a relative term, but once you drive and learn to live with an electric car everything else just feels old fashioned and sort of disconnected.
Bernd DasBrot Agreed they definitely accelerate fast. They are also very smooth and very quiet inside. And then you get the added benefit of never having to put gas in again. 🤣

I agree. The ones that are seen on the white car, black with yellow calipers, are waaaay more sexy. Actually I think they're on the 4s turbo, maybe only one they offer
I was an original Porsche Taycan reservation holder. I love the look , but given the low EPA of 201, I can’t justify the $150k plus price. I believe the battery range will be obsolete in a year. You can’t drive it like a Porsche if your range limits you severely.
I own a Tesla Model X and several Porsches and I can tell you I have never achieved the EPA range they stated (not even close). I do have a heavy right foot though. With that said, the 201 miles range (most likely 180 miles with spirited driving) of the Taycan Turbo is more than enough for a day of spirited driving.
I am sure the Taycan will make an amazing daily driver, and commuter car, that is even still fun when you want it to be. But it cannot replace the visceral connection of a good sounding ICE, with a proper manual transmission, and if I'm honest I don't really follow anyone that doesn't agree.
@@devinbender8428 yes but not as fun to drive as Model 3. Also much bigger. Taycan interior is close to Model 3 in size. And with $60k left I can get a really nice sport car, even a base Cayman if I really want the Porsche badge.

Paul M they are very similar in size to the S on the outside (within 1/2”) but the inside is a different story. Since the Tesla was designed as an electric car it has more cabin Space. The Taycan is just an electric panamera. So less cabin space

Yehuda Goldberg Exactly. For $80k more it needs the better suspension, better interior that it has but I needed to have like a 400 mile range AND more storage and seating. But it doesn’t. If this car was $130k for the Turbo S that would be better not $160-$180k
201 miles is for the taycan turbo, the turbo s should be even lower. Starting price of 150k for 201 miles. I know porsche is a prestigious brand but this just does not make sense
You’re forgetting that Porsche is Porsche and Tesla is an over priced plastic piece of shit. You want a proper comparison you’ll need to have it stand against Mercedes
I'd much rather have this with a range less than that of the Tesla; this is a far-superior car to the Model S in every way but range. Once you get less than 4 seconds for 0-60 mph, it doesn't really matter the differences below 4 seconds for 99% of people.
@@marsrover790 It's essentially the same price as a Model S, if you don't go crazy on options. Car Wow's CZcams video shot on ice/snow in sub-zero temps and studded snow tires in Finland yielded 258 miles of range in the 93-kWh Taycan 4S. What does the Model S P100D get for range in sub-zero temps on snow/ice? Please understand that, while I doubt I'll ever own a Tesla (and I've owned 3 Porsches), I am extremely thankful for Tesla's success and am very impressed by Tesla's superior technology; Tesla is better than Porsche by a long ways in their battery capacity. I've driven a Model S, and a good friend of mine owns one and loves it, and I've talked long hours with him about it, asking him about autopilot, about its range in different temps, about charging issues, etc. But I know from my Panameras that Porsches are really well built and that their seats are more comfortable for long road trips. I think that the computer screens in the Taycan look far superior to what Teslas have; I'm not a fan of big computer "tablets" that look like they're glued on to a dashboard as an afterthought, and I'm not a fan of the lack of instrument "gauges" behind the steering wheel (having to look over to the center screen in the Model 3, for example, for your speed). I think that the embedded digital screens look much better in the Taycan than the Tesla's large "tablets"; I like that you can optionally get a plain metal roof instead of a glass roof in the Taycan; I like the exterior appearance more in the Taycan (though the Model S is by far the best-looking Tesla, and I've always liked its exterior). Personally, I won't buy the Taycan in its current trim levels, but I will give a really good look at the forthcoming Cross Turismo (presumably a true hatchback with some extra ground clearance and presumably seating for three in the back seat) and the forthcoming Macan BEV. What's great is that Tesla is spurring all these other automakers to come out with things to rival the Teslas, and that's a good thing for everybody. Kudos to both Tesla and Porsche for their EVs. No other automaker so far has a good-looking and fun-to-drive EV worth seriously looking at, save maybe for Volvo (Polestar 2) and Ford (Mach-E); I also test-drove an I-Pace and was not impressed, and the e-tron is having tons of problems.

Read the latest reviews where they compare the two back to back in exactly the same driving scenario. The difference between the two is like 10 miles. Not sure what the EPA was doing (Unlike other cars, the EPA themselves did the numbers for the Taycan, not Porsche) but range is a non-issue in real-world scenarios.
How often do you drive more than 200 miles in a day? Leaving home with a full charge every morning few people will use quick charging unless they are on a trip. Even then they will probably stop for lunch or at least a bladder break while charging.
I spec'd one out and it ended up being close to $135k. Alternatively I could get a Tesla Model S Long Range for $55k less, be just as fast from 0-60, have an extra 120+ miles of driving range, nationwide Supercharger network, and AutoPilot on top of that. Porsche completely missed the mark on the Taycan and to make up for it they decided to charge about $75k too much.
so the Porsche should cost the same as a Tesla, which quality is that of a -90:s Camry? What?? LMFAO 😂😂😂 In our country the Taycan sells at the moment better than all other Porsche models count together.
Are you looking after your batteries? You shouldn't charge to 100% unless necessary, and also don't discharge past 40% or so. For daily driving, keep it in those ranges, and only extend beyond if needed.

bruintoo if you are driving it like tesla owners drive their teslas. You will get much more.
@@herrfleischgewehr that is EPA range, its not driven by Tesla or Porsche, its driven by the government for official scores.
@@MichaelHalcrow where did you hear that?
The 4 cylinder 718 is f@#$ing amazing. It really is.
Good work, Weaver!
A beautiful car love it. Mr Mat Watson from carwow sends his regards. Thanks to him i have subscribed.
April 10 is my day!!!!
That trick with the headrest came out on the 1984 Toyota Cressida. God I loved that car. How about the Taycan shooting brake. Come on Porsche!!!
Taycan Cross Turismo, coming 2020. Prototypes have already been spotted on the Nordschleife.
Everything is top-notch except the pathetic EPA range. If that is real, its a bummer.
I should add that's for the Turbo and Turbo S. Expect the 4s to get more like 240 miles of range.
@@mromar2724 didn't read the bit about NA I would definitely keep it as a weekend play thing, a little bit envious.

@@peterhammer6915 Yes of course the Taycan is fast and you probably have much better charging infrastructure than the UK, not hard. However my Panamera is not a toy. I drive long miles most days. I got back in my Panamera gentleman's club drove the 2 hours home and felt completely relaxed. I decided to keep the Panamera and buy a real toy 992 GTS. In the UK the only reason the Taycan out sells the Panamera is the tax advantage, bit sad really. The day I buy a car because its cheaper to own is the day I may as well give up, lay down and die.🤣

So glad to see Porsche dedicating themselves to electrification. I can’t say I’m a fan of artificial motor noise, though, and it’s especially absurd that Porsche charges $500 for the option.
The Tech of Tech agreed the penalty is far too low to be sufficiently impactful on the final price to discourage and at least cause drivers to consider not inflicting that polyester noise on innocent bystanders.
I’m going to order a 992 now, before they are extinct.
im trading my 992 for a taycan 4s, the 992 is good but a tad boring no?
4:25 The sound is not completely artificial. It's the original sound of the electric motors, amplified and EQ'd.

What a great video. That is one great car. No way (if I had the money) would I consider a Model S when I can get this. Not that there is anything wrong with the Tesla, but come on with the Taycan. The 4S would be enough that I wouldn't consider upgrading to the Turbo and Turbo S models.

The Taycan actually weigh 4953lbs, not 4400lbs
Nice. Except for the 2005 Dodge Charger chrome wheels, very nice.
Electric cars are the real deal. All you need to do is drive one to understand.

omg, those wheels are hideous! Being Porsche, they must've did it on purpose so you'll have pay extra to upgrade to normal wheels so people don't laugh at you.
I like these wheels a lot... Just wish they offered 18-inch wheels also, as that would provide more comfort, safety, and range.
Aero wheels can extend range by as much as 10%
I agree. The ones that are seen on the white car, black with yellow calipers, are waaaay more sexy. Actually I think they're on the 4s turbo, maybe only one they offer
Hilarious lol 😆! You're right though. They are.
