I rest a bit during my practice.
And my calluses appear only during my practice session,and disappear when I end.

Relatively is an important word in that, and it's great you speak about. I have a lot of issues with that since I am 18 but happily I can control them since a while. There are some muscle training movements that are quite easy and helpful, that I learned from a professional physicist.
How You told me here and in our Böblingen-group: just play 15-20 minutes, then take a rest was one important input to stay healthy. Thx so much for that. Whenever I overdo it, I need a real long pause.

Thanks for this Adam as I had a recent issue with my left wrist that left me in such pain that I couldn’t play for well over a month. Mainly because I was extending my wrist and holding the neck guitar so low and putting a lot of pressure on bar chords. I also have arthritis in my wrist and now there is an enlarged knot that can be quite tender at times. I simply avoided playing bar chords until the pain subsided to where I could play again. I am still having some issues, but at least I can play again and I am much more aware and careful of how I hold my wrist in relation to the guitar.
If you have something that appears to be a large knot or like the size of a nut underneath the skin that’s probably a ganglion cyst and it might be harmless. Of course, I am not a medical professional, but I had something similar a little almond shaped thing poking out of my left wrist and it’s gone away with time, so don’t worry about it.
I highly suggest snagging a few lessons with a good professional teacher in your area. Who can I borrow what you’re doing and give you some guidance. You may also need a guitar set up. It could be that your guitar is too tricky to play because the strings are high .

I should have been more clear. The outside wrist bone is noticeably swollen larger than on my right hand and is tender to the touch at times. I’m 71 years old so I have to expect some natural aging issues. I play my guitar at least 2-3 hours a day. But I take breaks more often. Not being able to play at all while waiting to heal was torture. It pays to pay attention to technique to prevent any unforeseen injury. Thanks again for this video.
About 10 years ago I had DeQuervain's Syndrome in my left wrist, which is basically tendinitis of the two tendons that control the thumb. They became inflamed and it got worse and worse until I really couldn't use my left hand for very much, especially playing. I ended up having the release surgery, which fixed it, but it was a couple of months of recovery and physical therapy, and then learning how to play again. So I highly recommend taking frequent breaks in your practicing and playing and also using ice if you feel the inflammation coming in. Pressing too hard is definitely a factor in inflaming tendons and muscles, so practicing a lighter touch is a really good idea. A good setup will also help a lot.

I've been suffering with the left hand wrist pain since more than a couple of years. And lately I was diagnosed with a ganglion cyst. Doctors mentioned that I developed it because of rigrous activity/guitar playing.
Now, it's very difficult for me to even practice for 20 minutes 😭
Oh man I am sorry to hear that. Do the 20 min if you can, and take breaks. Is there any kind of cream / apin releiving gel you could rub on?
@@adamrafferty Tried all the medication and therapies but nothing worked. The only thing that might help now is the surgery.
I feel like mistake #2 is the worst contributor to wrist pain. This is unavoidable in some cases but most cases you can find an easier way to engage your muscles to execute something on the guitar. I have been practicing Hot Type by Michael Hedges a lot. And he had much larger hands so this piece has some moments that are just kind of at the extreme upper limits of my left hand. So I have to take a break
Yes Andrew - squeezing too hard (#2) can sneak up in many situations - when the setup is bad, when one is nervous - and especially when one cant HEAR oneself and wants to play louder. Thanks for commenting! Groove on!

How much do you think a poor setup leads to wrist pain? I feel like it’s way easier to do a lot of these things if you’re not fighting with the mechanics of the guitar.
Absolutely Aaron… I put the set up issue later on in the video, but I’ve had so many times where I thought something was wrong with me as a player particularly playing a jazz guitar where I had to play a lot of notes… And when I get a set up it’s like everything becomes easy and buttery. That is one of the most overlooked things beginning guitar players don’t know about. Thanks for commenting!
