Seiko Kinetic Sports 100 Capacitor Replacement & Cleaning

  • This 1995 Seiko Kinetic Watch was long overdue for some attention. It wouldn't run, and it also needed a good cleaning. As the name suggests, this watch is powered by Kinetic Energy as the user moves. It contains a self-winding rotor mechanism to generate electricity with a piezoelectric quartz crystal, then stores the captured energy in a capacitor. This stored energy powers the watch! Pretty cool stuff!
    This watch comes equipped with a Maxell TC920S Capacitor. The datasheet for this capacitor states that, "if it's over-discharged to below the specified voltage (0.5 V), it may not be rechargeable." This is due to capacity degradation and internal short circuits. Overtime, inactivity will cause irreversible damage. I replaced it with a Panasonic MT920 Capacitor. The datasheet for this capacitor states no capacity degradation when tested "approximately 500 times at 100% discharge depth to nominal capacity." This new capacitor should last much longer, but only time will tell!

    I have this exact model on my wrist now and love it! capacitor was replaced some years ago. its maintaining time but charge indicator hasn't moved past low in a week. suppose its time for another capacitor. Thank you for sharing.

    I have the same model serial # 8N3772, Mov't 5M42 - 0B09. The only work done was a knob replacement due to condensation. I have yet to replace a capacitor or battery, which still runs fine. Although, I rarely use it nowadays.

    I believe that there's a chance that gas emitted from the failed capacitor tends to dry out the movements lubrication. Seiko have a list of recommended products to address this issue and prevent premature capacitor failure.

      I'm using a tool from a watch repair kit I got on Amazon: a.co/d/hHz0gHi
      Sorry my fingers got in the way. I just have one camera and it's hard to get various angles. What I'm doing there is pushing down a little tab that allows the stem to be inserted all the way. When the tab is released, then it locks the stem in place so it doesn't pull out when winding. Thanks for watching!

    Just changed out the capacitor battery with a Seiko OEM# 3023-5MZ rechargeable Lithium ion battery on a Seiko 5M42-0B09, but the battery will still not hold a charge, any thoughts?

    • @WatchOverhaul
      @WatchOverhaul  Před 2 lety +1

      It could be many things. I would first check if the capacitor terminals are making good contact. Maybe very carefully bend the terminals downward a little so it makes good contact with the charging unit.

    Man this looks so complicated
    How can I know my kinetic seiko needs a new capacitor? I took out my kibtetic watch after 20 years after going through my closet. I forgot all about it! I moved it for 9 minutes it ran for 12 hours and stopped As I move it rubs but stops . It rubs in 2 second intervals. Is there a way to fully charge it? And see how long it will last or find if my capacitor is dead?

    • @WatchOverhaul
      @WatchOverhaul  Před rokem +1

      From what I understand about these capacitors is if it's over-discharged to below the specified voltage described in the capacitors datasheet, it may not be rechargeable. This is due to capacity degradation and internal short circuits. Overtime, inactivity will cause irreversible damage. Your scenario is the same thing that happened to the watch in this video. My guess is you need to replace the capacitor. This is the capacitor I bought for this watch: amzn.to/3ReLDpm.

    • @deepb249
      @deepb249 Před rokem

      @@WatchOverhaul well is there any way I can check for sure the capacitor needs replacement? Are there ways to recharge the capacitor quickly and then if it is not keeping charge then I can know for sure that the capacitor needs to be replaced. You see I pulled the watch hand out from the crown when I stored the watch kinda like stopping a watch with the battery to prevent the battery from being used. May be the same principle applies to the seiko kinetic watch?

    • @WatchOverhaul
      @WatchOverhaul  Před rokem

      I don't know of a way to quickly charge it. You can wear the watch for a few days, then see it it's running longer. If it doesn't hold a charge after wearing it for a few days, then replace the capacitor. The capacitor will slowly loose its stored charge regardless of the position of the crown.
