  • My first bike packing trip to see if I liked it & to test some new kit. I only went about 7 miles from home but I really enjoyed it & will definitely be doing it again.
Sorry but having some microphone issues at the moment but I didn't realise until I got home... Please bare with me & I hope to sort it out soon.

You are right, I think people worry too much about gear these days. Just get out and have fun!

Exactly... It doesn't need to cost a fortune.

I'm just about to start bike packing, I'm 66. My biggest worry is where to spend the night. Which field to choose. What if the farmer comes along?

@@alpinaCD, hello & thank you for your message. I'm pleased to hear that you're about to go on your first bike packing trip & I really hope you enjoy it. On my trip, I chose to camp in a freshly bailed grass field. It was well off the road down an over grown grass track & there were no properties that could see me. I always set up late & leave early which lessons the chance of being caught. I've only been caught once, when I was on the Viking Way & the farmer very kindly let me stay.
Always leave no trace... No fires, no rubbish & bury poo. If you do get caught, always be polite, even if they move you on... It's their land so it's their choice! Our age goes in our favour but you can also say there will be no mess left when you leave.
Avoid livestock fields. You will sometimes find grassy corners as you go by arable fields but, under no circumstances should you damage any crops! Woodlands are another option & make great camping spots.
Alternatively, you could ask a farmer if he has anywhere you could camp, or, you could always ride to a campsite & stay there.
Whatever you decide to do... Enjoy yourself & stay safe!
