What I don't understand is why you take such a wonderful story, loved by so many people and then at every chance you get you gut it out of everything that matters. the defining parts and the motivations of the characters that originally made the books so great. I think the biggest problem is that series writers think people want small, easily digestible stories with lots of unnecessary drama every time they watch rather then a slowly building story that with every episode grows on us. I don't feel any emotion for anything in the series because there is no build up to love anything. I have never been more disappointed in an adaptation :(

      Brainwashing purposes.
They keep on making stories about some heroes saving the humankind. Haven't you noticed.
It makes people think this is gonna happen in real life as well. When we're in a deep shht then we tend to look up to the heroes, people who seem to defend us. So instead of doing something ourselves and helping ourselves and each other, we sit on our hands and wait for someone to help.
Now I know not all of us are like this but most are. These shows and movies paralized us. Made us compliant. Brainwashing.
      Also predictive programming.
I don't wanna be too conspiracy theory nut here. It's plain psychology really and a proven fact that TV has been used like that since from the beginning. When this technology was invented.
They keep on ruining those beloved books cause they want lure people in to watch their favorite characters to come alive. In some cases they succeed with the people who loved the books (GoT etc), they need to change the details to fit their narrative.
Many of us haven't even read the books but want to watch something exciting. New fans who don't know how much better the books are.
But yeah. Overall I THINK these countless of hero series and monster movies are used psychologically to brainwash us. Program us.
And hey, look how it's working 🤷

    Great video! Thank you!
I’ve devoted countless thousands of hours of my life to reading The Wheel of Time…I started back in the mid-1990s and re-read it every time a new book was released, all the way to the end. I am currently half-way through “A Memory of Light” after I decided to re-read the series when I heard about the show last September. I was so excited! I always dreamed of someday being able to see my favorite story on screen! I couldn’t wait!….
Let me just say this to non-readers: everyone and everything in the book in painstakingly described in minute detail. There is a glossary at the end of each book with pronunciations, definitions, and descriptions of all the main people, places, things, events that occur in that part of the story. There are “companion” books to the series that go into even greater detail and cover everything imaginable. You need to understand that there is absolutely no ambiguity in the story at all as far as how characters look, dress, and behave…the 15 books and the companion material provide a crystal clear blueprint for any screenwriter to use.
I fail to understand why the show creators chose to abandon such a clearly defined story and do their own thing. How hard would it have been to have the actress playing Nynaeve tug her braid???? Nynaeve does this constantly and her character is known for it! Loial looks completely wrong…he’s supposed to have tufted ears on top of his head! And the WAYS!!!…The Waygate is supposed to be a stone door with a realistic carving of a tree/leaves on it; Aes Sedai don’t open it using the One Power, anyone can open it by removing the trefoil leaf of the Avendasora tree! And if they had let Machin Shin catch them, like in the show, they would have all died in the Ways!
I could rant about how the show has failed on so many levels for hours! If you have read the books, as everyone should, then you understand the pain I feel having suffered through eight episodes of yelling “WHAT?!” at my tv screen every few minutes. How could they have fucked up the greatest fantasy story ever written this badly?!?! Shame on them for crushing my dream! Jerks.

Amazon should have hired the Game of Thrones directors (those 2 guys), they were excellent as long as there was a book to follow. Its these so-called "artistic vision" directors and writers that wreck popular classics trying to modernize, politicize and globalize it. Jordan and Sanderson gave us a 99% complete story, encyclopedia and Notes. It doesn't even need to be shortened because roughly half the written stuff is descriptive and thought streams, so WyTF did they go off the rails by episode 4?!? Was it to accommodate the demands of a certain "diva"? Well, Mrs. Jordan has a record of making poor decisions handing off her husband's work to lousy producers. Par for the course i guess.

    • @Hangtime_Davi64
      @Hangtime_Davi64 Před 2 lety +11

I went into the show assuming it was going to be vastly different from the books. I wanted to give it a lasting chance, and I knew that to do that I would have to understand that it would be it's own work. It is nearly impossible to recreate Robert Jordan's world accurately in a live action setting. Some things surely would have been easier to get right. Honestly, I think Moiraine opening the Ways with the one power aggravated me the most. Wouldn't it have been easier to remove the leaf than use all that CGI to have Moiraine use the power?
Anyone who wants a true-to-souce adaptation of The Wheel of Time is going to be incredibly disappointed in this series. I plan to keep watching it, but just as a (hopefully) fun fantasy TV series that sort of acts as an alternate universe version of the Dragon Reborn.

Following the book doesnt mean recreating every scene. Dont be disingenuous. The CHARACTERS are not true to themselves at ALL. Neither is the world. GoT did a faithful adaption of the first books, and was perfectly able to fit enough into episodes. And it became #1 world because of it. Solely because they didnt """"re-imagine""""(code for Woke BS) it, and respected the source material. Think, Nynaeve: Killer of MEN and Trollocs; Unblocked wielder of the one power, little temper. Al' Lan Mandragoran, the most stoic, masculine character in the series, to whom death is an old friend, and who has lost countless people he loves in his lifelong battle: Scream crying about some warder no one gives a fuck about. Perrin Aybara: Killer of whi...wait no that was given to Egwene my bad. Matrim Cauthon, mischievious trickst...wait no hes just a broody, moody thief now. These are not even caricatures of themselves; Theyre merely characters with the same names lol. Writing is terrible, Editing is terrible, CG is terrible, Plot decisions are terrible. It is basically a YA soap drama wearing WoT as a cheap skin suit. It WILL eventually be cancelled, mark my words. It is a woke abomination and doesnt hold a candle to the originals depth, gender balance themes, etc.

This show has massively downplayed the role of men in the WoT universe. Take the time Perrin and Egwene were traveling with the Tuatha'an. In the EotW, Raen gives all the explanations, as he is Mahdi of that particular caravan. Rafe apparently didn't like how the book downplay Ila's character, so he over compensated and basically remove Raen from the show. Then you have Rand defeating the Trollocs at Tarwin's Gap, Rafe didn't like that because then the women wouldn't have anything to do. The writers literally wrote themselves into a corner and were forced to make massive changes to the source material in order to fit with the new narrative that Rafe thinks is superior to Robert Jordan's.
No die hard fan expected a 1 to 1 adaptation, it was never going to happen. What we got though, wasn't an adaptation, but a completely new story that borrows elements, essentially just character and location names, from a vastly developed fictional world. I'd like to add some that WatchMojo didn't have:
    1. Weaves are learned, the two women in the show are able to do so much with the power yet they have not learned the specific weave. The targeted healing of 4 plus people at once, the holding back of the black wind, he healing of a woman who burned herself.
    2. Women can sense other women who are close to channeling and their potential power
    3. The dark wind, when it touches you it rips the victim apart, inside out. Also it did speak but always sounded at the edge of understanding. I think only Padan Fain could understand it
    4. The Ways, they don't need channeling to work. Also they haven't explained how the trollocs used them if channeling is needed
    5. Lan, the strong man has been degraded to a man crying on his knees, a man who has nothing to live for b4 Moraine. Lan has a kingdom he has been fighting to reclaim before he met her, Lan once said " the only job a man has is to face anything that comes on his feet", paraphrasing. Plus Lan has barely been to the tower yet there he is crying over a dead warder when he never cried when people closer to him died
    6. The relationship between Lan and Nynaeve. There was no reason Lan would show interest or view her in a good light. She tried to kill him when he was explaining and also threatened to let his Aes sedai die. This isn't how she is in the books, they forced them to be close but it was built on nothing really
    7. Tom teaching the boys some of his trade so they could make a living and travel well, also his colorful coat is always on display not hidden inside

Perrin's wife was probably one of the more insulting changes from the books by making him manslaughter her immediately so that they could just side-line him for the entire season because they didn't want to spend the time developing his character and didn't want to cast Elyas to help awaken Perrin's powers as a wolf-brother. Plus the obvious problematic implications of fridging a woman immediately to further a man's story when it wasn't in the books and didn't actually further his character. IF she had been a darkfriend about to kill him and his Ta'veren luck had killed her to save his life by chance, THEN it would be more acceptable, but as it is, it's just a flaccid "Durrr violence bad" message from a guy who clumsily murdered his wife. And it goes against the theme of the story. Another really annoying thing was the way they completely nerfed Rand. I really liked the actor and thought he portrayed Rand very well. But he wasn't given enough badass moments. In the beginning it made sense to keep him on the sidelines. They wanted to keep the mystery of who the dragon was. But once it was revealed, it sucks that Rand didn't get his moment to shine. He's supposed to be the most powerful Aes Sedai with more strength than anybody else. It is not the changes that anger me but the horrible writing and editing.
This series is confusing to those who have not read the books, much less watched all the supplemental material.
The world building is horrible, the main characters are poorly developed, and the dialog is boring.
Moiraine is supposed to be quiet and mysterious yet she is used for countless the exposition dumps. Meanwhile the Two Rivers gang just whine and moan. How can they talk so much and say so little?
They could have started with Moiraine in the White Tower, showed the final preparation of 8 getting ready to leave the tower. Used this as opportunity to bring those who have not read the books up to speed on lore needed to understand the first season. Intersperse this with some scenes from the Two Rivers to introduce the characters there. Hold off on the Troloc attack til the second episode. Then speed up the other episodes by removing meaningless scenes and make the dialog shorter, punchier, if it's not important to the plot drop it.
We don't fear the bad guys because we have witnessed way to much plot armor in the first season. Moiraine or some other channeler is able to overpower the opposition. Hell 5 chanellers can one shot the largest army of trolocs ever seen. Why do they even need the dragon? Why can't all the aes sedai just join powers and defeat the dark forces once and for all?

I was honestly worried by the time it was leaked Perrin was going to get and kill a wife..the DR mystery also killed any kind of development Rand should have had. He is the main pov in the first book, while in the show he ended being just...there, with his whole personality being Egwene.
And for as much as they aged (kinda) the characters to avoid the YA feeling, there was more teenage drama than in the book where they are actual teenagers.
The show totally lacked the lighter tone of the first book, the awe and naivety of the kids when it came to the world outside their village. Rand going from a really nice, naive sheepherder to one of the most feared men in the world. Bring double that number in Falme or Tear (no idea what they are going to do in season 2) and have him destroy them alone, without the sa'angreal?
They seriously need to at least refilm that scene, cause it's going to hinder any future battle, like Dumai's Wells. And while they are at it, change the subtitles in the LTT scene.

For me the premis that hooked me into the WOT way back when it was first released was the idea that the Dragon reborn was male, but any male that touch the source would go mad, and break the world again. To defeat the Dark One however, required the combined power of the male and female touching the Source. This made the perfect doomed hero story arch... the fact they removed that from the series by saying male or female could be the Dragon Reborn completely erased that premis... and when in the 1st episode Moraine said any 4 of them, including Egwene could be the Dragon reborn killed the series for me... can not get past the 2nd episode.... and WOT novel is one of my favourite Fantasy Series :(

When I first heard that the Wheel of Time was coming to Amazon Prime, I was pretty excited. I invested a lot of time with the books and was looking forward to seeing what they did in the series. I was imagining WoT to be, if not completely like the book, at least true to the story like the movie "The Lord of the Rings," and respect the author's view of Middle Earth and its characters. LoTR kept true to the story and only made changes to accommodate the transition from novel to cinematography. I would never imagine saying this, but Amazon Prime should cut its losses and cancel the train wreck of a story that was crammed into eight bad episodes.

While EGWENE and NYNAEVE have the awesome battle moment(supposed to be Rand) where they blow away an army with a blast of power. Then Rand takes a moment to talk about EGWENE AND NYNAEVE and how great they are, before *blip* THE END! FIN! The DRAGON REBORN, who has been denied screentime and development the whole first season FINALLY got his moment which was about EGWENE AND NYNAEVE WHILE EGWENE AND NYNAEVE SAVE THE DAY. Whew. Yeah, and the thing is - the girls DO get plenty of chances to be totally badass in the series. It's not like the books have them as simpering, helpless maidens who need to be rescued. It also really bothered me that Egwene was able to heal Nyneave when a)Nyneave is the one who is way more skilled/powerful in that realm, and b)THAT'S NOT HOW THE FORCE WORKS. I mean...the Power ;) Aside from the whole theme of not being able to heal death being REALLY important later on, even if Nyneave was near death...channeling is supposed to be a really precise skill that needs actual practice and technique, not just will power or raw strength. (Ironically, that is kind of how the Force works as it's always been a bit more handwavey and intuitive...)

Also, healing is something of a Talent, and Egwene doesn't have it.
Her talents are Dreaming and her strength with earth weaves.
The show makes the women far LESS badass by making them do everything better than anyone else. That's not what makes a badass.
In the book, Rand accidentally travels and destroys the trolloc army in a desperate rage (some might say, desperate NEED)... because he is channeling a pool of pure Saidin that was the Eye of the World. It's also the first evidence of his eventual descent into madness, accessing abilities he can not possibly know that (perhaps) belong to the original Dragon, Kinslayer himself.
They screwed up Ta'veren as well.
"why aren't the girls Ta'veren as well! Sexism!"
I ALMOST see it, but the thing is that being Ta'veren is to be robbed of your agency. To be used by the pattern.
The boys leave Emond's Field because they need to & because Moiraine manipulates them.
Egwene leaves because she CHOOSES to. She WANTS to be Aes Sedai. She WANTS adventure.
Nynaeve leaves because she needs to protect the "kids" she helped raise and feels responsible for.
They have agency. In the books.
How Rafe is going to be consistent with the books later on, when Ta'veren "power" becomes a narrative tool I do NOT know. Abandoning more of the source material, likely.
Even the focus on Aes Sedai in Season 1 as some kind of gambit (likely to appeal to "grrl power" narratives) is EXTREMELY bad as a choice.
The ONE thing that Aes Sedai rely on throughout is their air of mystery. We lose that and gain a dumb "who is the dragon" mystery that lacks ANY of the foreshadowing Jordan gave. We see a little of the white tower politics, but it's more of a distraction from the narrative than anything.
Viewers should STILL be wondering at the end of Season 1 whether Aes Sedai are good guys, or whether they're the manipulative witches that many believe them to be, and there should be a lot of evidence for both (Elaida!)

The plot is a mess. It follows this who is the dragon reborn mystery, which forces it to not develop the main characters at all. And then you reveal it in the most uninspired way possible. it's a nothing, there is no tension or excitement at all.
Moiraine is stupid. They give her the motivation of finding the dragon reborn, but why? How? They talk about the prophesies, but then they crap all over them by talking about how they are unreliable, and contradictory. So she's just following Suian's dream? Oh but wait, they also said dreams are dangerous and unreliable too!
They introduce the phrase "Ta'Veren" in episode 1 and proceed to never tell you what it is.
No real world building with regards to the dragon, or why men go crazy or are dangerous. Nothing is explained.
This is actually a problem with many aspects of the show, they want you to have book knowledge to fill in all the gaps they aren't dealing with, but then they simultaneously crap on you for having read the books.
Who is even the Antagonist in this series? Is it the Dark One? The Trollocs? Liandrin? The show does nothing to establish what the ultimate stakes are.

But you barely see either of them fight the trollocs. Rand was a talented archer, and Mat was very good with the staff. Because his dad had trained him. Because his dad wasn't a cheating alcoholic. How can you only have Saidin and Saidar as a mention? Should be number one on the list. Biological gender is a HUGE part of the Wheel of Time series. The story is mainly a coming of age story, boys becoming men. The One Power is divided into Saidar and Saidin(which is tainted). Saidin can only be channeled by men, this plays a huge role in the story, since it is why men that channel go insane and no, they dont make the one power dirty for women as they say in episode one. It goes even as far as when a character in the story gets put into a womans body HE still channels Saidin, because he still has a MALE soul. Nothing can change this, you cannot say I know identify as a woman and then channel Saidar.
They have also destroyed almost all male characters in the show. Made them weak and removed all the cool things they did and given the women those moments. Agelmar for example, in the book he is very respectful to Moiraine and the Aes Sedai order. He begs her for help when they will face the Trollocks knowing they will not survive the encounter without her help, but they will still go since that is what men do, they protect their women and children and will buy time for them to evacuate the city. Moiraine says she cannot help him since they are on their mission to find the Eye of the World, Agelmar then offers to send a thousand men to aid her, knowing that it will make him and his warriors face their end even sooner, but he is willing to make that sacrifice to aid her in her mission. Show version has him as an arrogant asshole full of himself and looking down at Aes Sedai and refusing to ask for aid.
Then the show destroys Mat's father, making him the towns drunk making out with whenches infront of everyone.. (And no, there are no whenches in Emonds field in the books, it is a very small farming community.) None of this would be allowed in Emond's field.

Muzze BN said it best: What I don't understand is why you take such a wonderful story, loved by so many people and then at every chance you get you gut it out of everything that matters. the defining parts and the motivations of the characters that originally made the books so great. I think the biggest problem is that series writers think people want small, easily digestible stories with lots of unnecessary drama every time they watch rather then a slowly building story that with every episode grows on us. Two things,
    1) - The cold open for Episode 1 should've been the book Prologue. Without it there are literally no _real_ stakes for any of our protagonists to come up against, least of all Rand.
    2) - I can't fathom why they took away Rand's moment at the Eye of the World. Even leaving out the two Forsaken they should've at least given Rand his ultimate moment by showing up on the battle scene and decimating the Trolloc/Fade hoard. This would've given the viewers, namely the non-book reading viewers, an _epic_ hook, line, and sinker moment of, "Holy Sh!t, now this guy must be the Dragon!" for entering into season 2. Instead they made him completely weak. He needed a Sa'Angreal to multiply his power a hundredfold to shine a piddly light that wasn't even remotely comparable to the power Nynaeve showed in episode 4. At least not visually, which might be important to depict given this is a visual medium! When in the book he channeled enough power to destroy the armies and take out at least one Forsaken, who's strength was only slightly less than Lew Therin's back in the day, _without_ a Sa'Angreal, because he _is that strong in the Power!_

    1) In S01E08 Fadan Fain kills the guards with the dagger from Shadar Logoth and he also stabs Loial (only a miracle can save him). How did Padan Fain get the dagger? In the books Mat joins his friends to Fal Dara and there he is robbed by Padan Fain (TGH, chapter 6).

  • @lisamarieligreci-newton7804

After the really impressive video you did on the trailer I wondered how you would take this! I feel I detected some subtle shade, but maybe I'm biased ;) Some of the changes (condensing portions of Camelyn into Tar Valon/Fal Dara, expanding some of the Tower politics so we'd get a better idea what was going on/foreshadowng, etc) I was fine with, but some others were so deeply disruptive to me it changes the whole story. I also feel Lan and Nyneave's relationship was developed way too fast and overlooked several key personality traits/backstory elements that were the reason their relationship took so long to consummate in the books. Rafe strikes me as somebody who bit off more than he could chew - he wanted to 'improve' upon a story that was already much better than what he could do (I was fine with a lot of it, but the finale had so many plotting/pacing issues and shallow tropes that he really does strike me as somebody still cutting their teeth). Yes, parts of Jordan's story didn't age well and there are certainly a few things I could see tweaking (or slimming) but certain elements can't be changed without undermining all the worldbuilding and backstory. And why the heck was Lews Therin already referred to as the Dragon Reborn? Why no War of Power? I also really wanted to see the Fade on the road, and also the REAL prologue.

The whole thing makes no sense even if you didn’t read the books I’m sure it doesn’t make sense to allow the dragon who you were looking for all your life to just run into the blight by himself. Getting tired of the woke overtones too. The two rivers folk all have similar ancestry, why is there multiculturalism in the two rivers? Now that season 2 has been aired I find myself just enjoying it for what it is.
A nice visual bit of story telling from the past and I’m enjoying the ride.
To expect a 15 book series ( and thick books at that) to be made into a television series
that would have to go on for at least 15 years is unrealistic.

ever be renewed. Since seeing the positive reviews from season 2 and knowing now that at least season 3 is in the works
I feel the future is looking bright for Wheel of Time. (Even if the faithful keep screaming)
Being doubtful I’ll be around for its conclusion I’ll just enjoy what I get the chance to see.

I was so excited about the TV show since it was announced and now feel like us fans of the books were duped. I realize that it is an adaptation, but you don't leave out key elements that are relevant in the middle and end of the series! I didn't see the need to age the characters or change the plot as much as they did. Robert Jordan did such an amazing job writing the books that there should have been more than enough content to flesh out a fantastic season one, or first movie.
Where is Bayle Domon, Elyas Machera and Elayne?! All three of these characters are no where and they should be there. Where is the Green Man and the Dragon Banner, the Horn of Valere where it should be and the Forsaken?! It is important that you know how many Forsaken there actually are, and that 2 of them are now dead. One by the Green Man and the other by Rand. Where is Rand defeating the Trolloc Army, not the 5 Aes Sedai that almost ended up killing Nynaeve, who isn't even able to channel unless she is angry! And all of the sleeping together with this person and that, and having Perrin (done him real dirty in this aspect too) married and then trying to follow The Way of The Leaf, please! Elyas is supposed to be there to make him aware of what is happening. He isn't left to blindly experience and not know what is happening to him. Not to mention that he never saw Egwene in the way the show inflected. And Mat... omg have they ever done this character a dirty turn! He is not this disloyal friend. All through the first 5 books he is with Rand and is always telling himself that "he stays because Rand needs him" and then they go and make him a scoundrel! The boy is almost as good a horse trader as his respected Da in the Two Rivers and known for being a good man through the surrounding villages. None of this womanizing father and drunken mother nonsense. Mat is supposed to take chances, be impulsive and rogish, but that is part of his charm! What about Eladia? She certainly is important in the following books and is supposed to be revealed that she has a weak Foretelling Talent. Vastly understating Min's Talent and then Moraine losing her powers....
That isn't even all of it. I honestly feel like the fans of the book series are outside trying to look in through the rain, but the windows are still too foggy. I don't know if I am excited for season 2, regardless of who is cast for what character. I was so looking forward to each character's story arch the way that Robert Jordan wrote it, but apparently that isn't mean to be. There is supposed to be trials, hardships, friendships made but by characters that are still so unsure of themselves that they don't even know what they will be doing in a day's time!

Wheel of time has always been my favorite series and I have reread it countless times and am currently re listening to the audiobooks. Thus I ended up watching this review video. It was such a big disappointment for a self proclaimed book fan in the show runner Rafe to completely disregard and in fact shit on the core of what made these books so epic. Most things have already been mentioned in the comments, but I think one part they really did not manage to bring through at all is how the Dragon was viewed in the wheel of time. The main characters chat kinda casually among themselves about who could be the dragon, they don't want to be him, but it is not really explained or showed how completely unacceptable or ridiculous this would be to be called the dragon out of thin air and with bad reason. Rand used the whole first 3 books to completely come to the acceptance that he was the dragon. Even with all that happened to him he could not accept it. I think the show fails to explain how male channelers and people of wot world really see male channelers. They see it similar to pure evil, if in this real world someone would tell you that you was actually Satan or if you realized you were destined to be a pedofile or raper or the like that you have this evil living inside of you. This is how Rand sees it.
