- A series in ten parts going through the whole modelling process from start to finish of an Airfix Messerschmitt Bf109E.
In this first part of a ten part series we look at building and painting a cockpit...
Been doing rc aircraft for 6 years but got a 1:48 Revel me109 as a gift. Just starting to build it when I cant fly rc due to rainy weather. Your vids are interesting, informative, and entertaining. Keep up the good work mate
Thank you for these videos still relevant for people in 2019!
Cheers buddy, thanks for watching and commenting - Paul :)
Very interesting vid - thanks for the upload.
my aunt is retired now, she was a dermatologist. she gave me her magnifying glass. its got a built in Florissant light and spring loaded arm which extends about 5 feet its great. I'm just new to an air brush but what a difference. Thanks for the video
Great as always
dude Ive been looking for a channel like this for weeks now :D I just started doing scale models a few weeks ago and I love it. thanks for the tips mate, ill be watching all ur vids :D
Thank you, good series.
thanks for watching and commenting - Paul :)
Hey, Paul. I just recently signed up at ISM and haven't built a model for over 30 years. I was trying to figure out what kit to do to start with and b/c of this video I went looking for the same kit. Although I'm in Canada, I found the best price from the UK, so I ordered two kits - maybe should have done three so I can build all three versions, lol! See you on the forums!
Thank you
Thats great craig, its a great little kit and can be found at a real good price, hope you enjoying the forum, see you on there :)
@docleegb Its the coloured fluid you put in your cars windscreen fluid reservoir
Currently on programme 4 and finding it very helpful.
Cheers buddy, thanks for watching, sorry for the late reply - Paul :)
great insight into modern modeling techniques. i have not built a model kit in the last 25 years but your channel as inspired to get back into the hobby. i have picked up what type of air brushes you use, but what sort of compressor do you have to use, i have to ask as the last time i modeled it was with paint brushes and ennamel paint. im off to watch the rest of your uploads now thanks.
Hi, happened upon your videos and because they are so clear and put over brilliantly they have rekindled my enthusiasm in airbrushing, thank you.
I have had the following kit for some years but have never had much success; it has been put away in the cupboard and forgotten about until now and would like your thoughts please.
The compressor is a Testors Baby Blue (circa 2006) AC 55 producing 10 l/min at 2.9 bar (42 psi) and the airbrush is an Aztek Broad stroke no A2203.
I suspect the problem is mainly with the airbrush and so will be upgrading it to a gravity feed maybe double acting. Before I buy the airbrush alone could you tell me if the compressor is up to the job because if you think it is not then I will buy a kit (on your recommendation) of both compressor and air brush.
Thanks
Bob
@Docleegb I use mainly a Harder & Steenbeck Evolution, i also use a iwata revolution and iwata neo.
Paul, I just wanted to thank you for this information my friend. I would like to expand but want to keep it very simple here; you have sorted out many of my "NOOB" problems doing this hobby, and wanted to thank you so much Sir :).
What kind of filter do you use in your exhaust booth?
Thanks for this Intro and Beginning into preparation of all the steps involved. I am just moving from paint brushes to airbrushing so I am closely looking at your technique, equipment and style when it comes to Airbrushing. Do you have any recommendations for me in regard to single or double action? Should I just buy Double Action since people say you often move to one of those eventually anyway. What about compressor?
In terms of thinning the paint, is it essential to always thin? Thanks for the video!
Interesting techniques. Can you say why you build the cockpit first rather than painting it on the sprue and touching it up after assembly. Seems to me it is harder to get the fine detail in after assembly. Or does it really matter how it's done? Helpful videos. Thanks for you tutorials. I will be using them as a training guide for me when my first airbrush purchase arrives.
Cheers
Do you airbrush all of the parts or do you hand brush the smaller parts like landing gear and tires?
@elnogga Glad you like the channel, myself and lee have alot of plans for the channel over the next few months

hi paul. I only make 1/72 models. I just finished a ME 110 and in the middel of a p51d must. Do u recommend a good model in 1/72 but dont mind compony
Where can you but this kit because I always a kit with different box arr
I couldn't understand you when you stated what paint you are using for your basecoat/primer in the cockpit. Could you please give the name? Thanks,
What program/service did you use to make your intro?
Hi i have a Paasche compresor, but you can cheaper ones from ebay for around the £70-80 that will do the job fine, look for the AS-186 compressor
What type of airbrush do,you use?
What is screen wash? For us in the the States?
Paul do you have a cd for sale on all 13 videos of this series
We don't no sorry John, something we have thought about and may do at a later date :)
Wow thanks I have been doing in all wrong!
Hey steven, i don't think there is a right or wrong way to do this, all i can do is show the way i do it and if it proves useful to others then so be it, cheers paul.
could the concentrated screen wash be used as an airbrush cleaner??
I imagine that's quite dangerous with the chemicals they use...!!!
+dedicatedmodeller99 No its rubbish as an airbrush cleaner, use UMP airbrush cleaner its much better
Hi Paul,im a really fan of ISM ,Thanks you guys
which is the name of the product to clean brushes ( min 16:30 ~) ,i could not catch you when you said the brand, you said its a cheap one bought here in UK in Tesco
Concentrated car screen wash
hi what make is your brush stand and where could i get one please thanks
mick
Hi mick its the mr hobby paintbrush stand, you can find them on hobby link japan and sometimes ebay :)
thanks paul

Wonderful help!
I wonder if the lad learned just how distracting his "concentration stone" is to listeners IRL and video?
So the lad is me and wtf is a distraction stone?
@@InternationalScaleModeller : A concentration stone is a mental focuser for the speaker.
It's a distraction stone for the listener if too obvious.
Your concentration is focused by your hands - which are distracting away from your subject.
Imagine being deaf and someone is kind enough to take the time to learn the ASL alphabet.
So they are spelling letters to you to communicate.
Imagine if the nice person bounces his hand with each letter.
The nice person is thinking, "bouncing with every letter tells (you) that I am on another letter," but to the deaf person - who has to follow the letters that are bouncing like a vertical tennis match, it's annoying.

This is what you hands are in your well educating and familiarizing video.
When your hands are occupied, they are not trying to upstage the model/verbal lesson.
You teach me a helpful education that I have not performed in over 50 years! My B.A. allows me to return the favor!
I'm glad to be helpful too!
Keep up your good work because it is appreciated 👍
Hey guys!! I have an issue with my airbrush. when I spray it sputters ever so slightly. I've cleaned the airbrush within an inch of its life. I've thinned the paint, I haven't thinned the paint. I'm using Testors flat enamel paints l am also using an Iwata Neo airbrush I think the needle is a 0.35 mm (I'm kinda new at this). Any suggestions?
Do you use the appropriate air pressure for the paint? Look also if your nozzle/needl are not damaged.
Also personnaly I will avoid this airbrush it is too cheeper and ii is not manufactured from Iwata but FOR Iwata. Iwata have a nice airbrush the Revolution Cr with a 0.5 mm needle/nozzle wich is perfect. In airbrushing, trigger control is the key not only the size of the needle /nozzle. A 0.3mm is fine too. For this, go the Eclipse model instead. Those airbrushes are affordables and are great quality instruments from Iwata unlike the Neo brand.
Jesse Osinski I had the same problem mate. Lower your pressure and thin the paint a tad more and you should be okay. Make sure you keep your airbrush clean
When ever I use my vallejo airbrush primer the paint and primer just rub off with handling any idea what's wrong
Your most probably not giving it enough time to dry possible also spraying your coats too thick. Give the Ak or ammo primer a go its much better
Daniel, make sure that you wash the surface your trying to paint with washing up liquid before using the primer. Leave primed surface overnight at least before trying to sand down . Use wet and dry and water with a little soap in it . Vallejo are really good paints to use through air brush . Hope this helps REgards Paul
I had the same problem, Daniel. I think the tips about not spraying too thickly and giving it a good 24 hours at least to dry are on the right track.
your air tank kicked in quick whats the cfm on that, though seemed alot of air to paint ratio?
Its a 2.5 l tank if i remember correctly i do spray at a high air pressure, its just the way i like top airbrush
been following ism now, just a tip from an aircraft painter of many years (the real ones), if you do cellulose pressure down and keep it wet if it goes dry 600 grit wet with a bar of soap in the water mixed
yeah i always spray cellulose at 12 psi, have done for years now :) And yeah i use wet and dry as well as micro mesh to smooth the surface. Thanks for the advice :)
ive been looking at a few vids now on you tube, i love your work and the tutorials are great, did my first kit in over 30yrs after watching I.S.M....and i bought the Da Nang phantom you reviewed..never had etch or resin in my day...just stringy glue..keep up the good work, im now hooked on this hobby....and congratulations
Cheers Buddy :)
the subs are hilarious
Absolute gold. CHeers!
Really wish modern scale modelling wasn't dominated by airbrushes. It saddens me to see them.Only wish we could go back traditionally...
Things move on and for the better imo. Airbrushing is faster, easier and imo gives a better finish. Whats not to like.
wow how different you sound today .... hey booboo
LMAO
Thank you
