Ugh i honestly hate rupi kaurs poetry with passion. I remember that weird phase when everybody on tumblr/insta was uploading poems from milk and honey💀dark times
I am disgusted
bodgie I’ve always disliked her work, it was lazy and pointless.
Her poem “Recess” sounds like a semi-political shitpost you’d see on tumblr

I've just read your comment after commenting myself :d
I agree, and the 'advice' ones also give me a very tumblr-ish vibe

Gabbie Hannah: You should manage your expectations
Omg 😂😂😂
Lmao
Its not the reader’s job to manage their expectations though. The reader pay hard earned money just to this? Ok Gabbie...
Oof, she actually said something like that in response to the criticism?? 😳
aishat yeah, she got in a scandal for promoting a scam, and when people complained she said they should “manage their expectations”
Me: This seems mean and unnecessary.
Her:I like sleep. Sleep is neat.
Me: Oh. I see.
Jade Neal I thought the same thing. I was thinking “not everyone can start off writing the best stuff”. Then she read that line, and I thought ohh it’s the same quality as something I jotted down in my middle school journal.
I've read better poems written by actual elementary students. Granted they were at the higher than average end of the class in their writing skills, but still.
@@kokopuppy57342 Me too. I was thinking that Rachel was going to make herself out to be a bit of a poetry snob, but no. It is genuinely bad. I also love that she contrasts it with some of her favourite poems, which really puts it into perspective.
100% felt the same way at first. There's nothing I enjoy about Gabbie, but I thought: "well maybe she's not Gabbie's audience". But no. No no no. She should have marketed this as an infant's board book. This is so bizarre.

I think it was because of the tittle she can see that and get defensive but if you are going to put out a poetry book you need to see a title that that and think wow why I wonder why she thought that and yeah someone saying your poetry is bad can hurt but come on it’s not bullying it can come of as rude but to say it is bullying is putting down victims of bullying

i love how there’s nothing to be gained
from a lie
i love how you try and try and try and never get anywhere
i love how nothing matters
how no one cares in the void
no stares in the void
no one even glances your way
i like how your shoulder relax
and your back cracks
and you sigh, a deep long sigh
a clear mind
nothing to grasp for, no reason to try
i like sleep
i love the vast, peaceful, the empty, chaotic make believe.

In a kids book.
Not even. Shel Silverstein wrote children's poetry and a lot of what he wrote was pretty deep when I look back.
Yes -- Shel Silverstein wrote MUCH better poetry than this, as do Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear and others. There are some excellent poets whose work is directed to children. In contrast, I can't helping thinking that the Hanna poem about sleep is of similar awfulness (as far as structure, rhyme, meter, etc., _not_ content) to some of the "verses" in Ken Ham's kids' books. (Which Rachel has done videos about too, of course.)

It makes me kind of mad that she’s supposedly this great advocate for mental health? She turned cutting, which I have struggled with, and turns it into a joke to sell? I think she doesn’t realise a poem like that will do more harm than good. I don’t know if I’m overly sensitive, but that poem made my struggles feel completely invalidated.
you're not overly senstive. it's genuinely disrespectful. its like if she'd turned something like death into a cheap joke. doing anything of that caliber is incredibly insensitive and disgusting. you're not in the wrong for recognizing that.
Definitely not over-sensitive. That poem is disgusting.
Late to the party, but you're not overly sensitive. I struggled with self harm too, and that poem made it feel like a joke. Here's to hoping you're recovering here in 2023

bo burnahm: *writes a song about going to chipotle and getting a burrito only to have the burrito fall apart making him upset and the burrito is actually a metaphor for his life and how the pressure of fame and being a comic has put serious strain on his mental health

You made me rewatch bo burnham's shows because of this comment. His work is 1000x better than anything Gabbie could ever write or preform
@@ahshitherewegoagain7461 i totally forgot the first part of the song i mentioned!
he complains about how he can't fit his hand in a pringles can, on the surface it's just him making fun of the fact that kanye was complaining about something so simple and petty (his shirts not selling). but on the inside, it's a commentary about how society puts so much unrealistic expectations onto everyone which why he asks everyone to raise their hand if they too can't fit their hand inside of a pringle can. the song goes on on and explains how we continue this cycle onto our children with the line "i want to have a daughter so i can finally have someone in the house who can fit their hand inside a pringle can"
i saw an interview of bo where he said that the burrito part wasnt a metaphor but only a thing he thought was funny. still interesting to think about though

Jessica Sanchez damn girl! Show off! Jk😂 seriously though that was great, if you haven’t already I think you should consider poetry as a career path
Gabbie made a video about defending her poetry and it really got me mad. She just told everyone who criticized it as “not looking deep enough into it.” No, people looked into it, Gabbie just didn’t leave anything for people to look into. She needs to learn that intention doesn’t matter, it’s what the reader gets from the poem. You shouldn’t have to defend it.
art should speak for itself; what you're trying to say should be evident in the work. if she has to spell it out then she didn't do a good job conveying meaning in the poems
Look I LOVE poetry and all forms of art. I love vague poems because it interests and makes the reader more eager to find out of the actual meaning of the poem. But Gabbie’s “poetry” is just SO basic and simple with childish rhymes and vocabulary that its just plain, basic, bad, and childish. I mean Shel Silverstein’s poems are really good, but its just not for Gabbie. If she has to explain these basic af “poems” then she’s just a lost cause I’m sorry she should stick to one thing at a time like her music poetry is just not for her.
Rachel mentioned spending time with Gabbie's poem but not seeing anything

“ If I paid money for your book, then I can criticize it” that’s actually a good point tbh
Absolutely! I remember I first came across this point of view when a CZcamsr destroyed her James Charles make up palette, and everyone were criticizing her, until someone pointed out: well, she bought it, it's hers, she can do whatever she wants
It really is. Any art posted publically, especially art for sale, is open for criticism.
Kat Momo I think it’s more of why buy something just to destroy it you know? Like that’s time effort and money and resources that went into it. By destroying something without even getting a use out of it you’re basically just wasting resources and that’s not very good for the environment.
Suicidal Nematode well i don’t really think she bought the book just to criticize it. she went in with no opinion, since she hasn’t read anything else from gabbie, and when she finished the book, she had an opinion and decided to share it. she shared it in such a polite and nice way too she was very supportive and showed ways to better the poetry
jolie rose forbes I’m not talking about the book though I’m talking about someone destroying something for no good reason like the makeup palette. I never mentioned the book. She can criticize the book all she wants cause she paid for it but destroying something for clout is stupid IMO
The fact that gabbie constantly talks about mental health and how she’s an “advocate” and complains about how people are always “abusing” her by having opinions about her behavior and work, yet thought that poem “cut” was a good look is DISGUSTING.
I just read it. As a person with schizoaffective disorder bipolar type (think schizophrenia mixed with bipolar) who used to self harm and has had multiple suicide attempts - nearly succeeded one time - that made me sick. At first I thought, "poorly written, but I can relate." Then she tried to make a funny and just made me angry. Super callous and lacking of any self awareness.
I don't understand at all how this is supposed to be "written from the point of view of an ab*sed child". I feel like GH doesn't remember the actual book she wrote, just the one she wanted to write or imagined she wrote.
Oh dear. Poetry, written by someone who lies, gaslights and is an awful person in general, is shallow?

Something I've noticed about Gabbie is that she's very fake deep. She's always talking about how deep her music is and there's so many underlying messages but her lyrics are all straight to the point and obvious, any meaning she does try to add seems so forced.
I think this is a big reason why she chose to do a poetry book. Poetry's main point is to carry a message through your words and she chose to write poetry to seem deep. Her poems in reality aren't crafted to have a deep underlying meaning that you wouldn't realize until you've reread it tons of times, it's very straight to the point like you had said.

I never liked the argument "you can't do better, so your arguments are invalid." It sounds reasonable for a second until you think about it. Okay, maybe I can't do better. Does that mean I can't criticize it? I can't cook, so if I go to a restaurant and I don't like the food, am I not allowed to complain because I can't do better? Of course not.
I mean, I don't like him, but look at Simon Cowell, he can't sing for shit, but he can judge, and know a good singer when he sees one. A lot of movie directors can't act, but they can direct an actor. I can't draw or paint for shit, but I know a good art work when I see one. This argument of you can't do better, it's such a patronising argument
@@anapaulapaco5514 Exactly! (sorry for the late reply, I didn't even see this comment)
Even nonsense poetry and childlike poetry like Edward Lear and Shel Silverstein have at least one or 2 layers to read into if not more, this book isn't poetry
So basically her book was only a success because of her 10 year old fans.... not because of actually good poetry.... interesting.
I used to be a fan of her (I'm an adult btw) so I bought the book when it came out. And I guess I'm not alone on that. You only realise how bad it is when you read it obviously, but at that point the sale already counts in regards to the best selling list so
Philine Wreck yeah I agree. I was going to buy it because I too was a huge fan, but any time I see top youtubers hit a milestone like that, I can’t help but think it’s because they have a fan base. Not actually anything special about them. Like Logan Paul’s podcast got nominated for an award.... and I’ve listened to it before and it’s nothing special.
i remember watching her a lot when her book was in the makings and she really tried to milk her fans into pre-ordering the book.. i even bought it myself and i ended up being really disappointed because it was so bad.
she subliminallt forced her subs to buy her shitass books
@@mosschievous5862 damn that really sucks, I only heard of her through Dr. Mike's video and I thought she seemed cool. Now that I hear about this, I wonder if she's even careful of what she says.

Sophia Troanska even a 5 year old would read “Sleep” and be like ???
I’m so glad you kept this up. It’s the principle. She can’t bully her way to a good review. She needs to take the criticism seriously and actually work hard on her poetry, instead of just lazily writing a bunch of “poems” then freaking out at anyone who has criticism.
Came for the drama, stayed for the poetry lesson

Thank you so much :)
This makes me mad because actual poets need to face legitimate, constant rejection to get published.
Yup and Gabbie thought that her CZcams clout was enough and sadly enough, it was.
Publishers know that they can make money with a built in audience and so they dont tell these youtubers that their work is embarrassingly bad.
@@TheOwlQueen exactly what I was thinking. Publishers aren't going to publish something that isn't good, unless that person already has a fanbase, then they really don't care.
And that’s another reason I don’t like editorials (apart from their greediness, which later they blame on piracy) and prefer self-publishing.
Claire Kennedy SO TRUE
Gabbies poems be like:
Trees have bark
Dogs bark
I am one with nature
Wouldn't that mean she has to care about anything other than herself, e.g. nature?
How did that old thing go?
"I'm a bitch, well, bitches are female dogs, dogs bark, bark grows on trees, trees are in nature, nature is beautiful, therefore I am beautiful."
That's how all of this reads
Actually that is a lot more appealing than anything she wrote - it’s simple yet funny, even removed from the mocking of Gabbie, it can be interpreted as a mockery of a certain subsection of society.
Essentially you’ve managed to create two layers in three sentences which is a lot more than Gabbie ever did
Genuinely if you flip the first two lines you even get a proper rhythm.
“Dogs Bark
Trees have bark
I am one with nature”
Also as the person above pointed out it is reminiscent of a playground rhyme, which combined with its simplicity, if it is taken as a criticism of a subculture if society would imply that that subculture isn’t very smart and relies on 8th grade intellectualism.
So layer one: a funny short poem of someone say in the park
Layer two: a comment on egocentric subculture being simple, vapid and self important
Layer three: One could argue that you are saying that to enjoy nature one must too regress to a simplistic childlike state, although I am not sure I could write a super convincing argument on that...
I’m sorry, I just really enjoyed those three lines, they’re genuinely quite good imo. Yes I realize this is ridiculous
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😭
Love how I came here to laugh at Gabbies "poems", but ended up falling in love with your pashion and knowledge of poems
Yes. I could listen to her read poetry all day, especially one's written in a Yorkshire accent. Adorable.
Pashion?
Are you trying to say fashion or passion? Or are you cleverly merging the two words?
came here after watching Gabbie Hanna slandering you on her insta stories and may I just say...you speak so eloquently and make very intelligent points. It is clear you know what you are talking about and anyone who has ever studied poetry will be able to grasp the points you make and most likely agree. One of the reasons poetry exists is to be critiqued, so I hope you aren't letting Gabbie's vile words hurt you! :)
Her poems should have been a child’s book. It would have worked better.
Human Being honestly this isn’t even an insult, like it would make sense cause of the title adultolesence, she could have made it like explaining adult problems and adult life to a kids in a very surface level way. That would be very interesting, to see her explain multi level complex problems into small and simple sentences.
Milk Exactly
Just as long as it doesn’t turn the poor kids angsty
She’d have to fix all those “red words” though lol
YES sleep sounds like an amazing poem for little children; i just hate the fact that it's in a book made for teens to adults
gabbie hanna is literally just a middle schooler forced to write poems for english class with too much access to a thesaurus
Not enough access to a thesaurus
I bet she went to google to find a rhyming website
...I think you just summed up her personality actually. you put into words what we have all been thinking lmao
I’m actually a middle schooler and I write better poetry than her.
no, shes writes just like a primary school student
At the sake of giving Gabbie the benefit of the doubt I decided to watch this. This is not bullying. This is a critique and review from someone who knows what they’re talking about. She compares the poems to multiple other writers who wrote about similar themes. Gabbie’s rampage is unbelievable and though I’ve been less of a fan of hers for years, this is too much. Ridiculous. I’m sorry you’re experiencing the backlash of her tantrum.
The fact that she rejects criticism of her work honestly shows that she doesnt care about the medium. Analyzing poetry is like.... one of the most important things about consuming poetry. I've never met a poet who wasnt interested in bettering their work by receiving feedback.
Girl really said “I like sleep, sleep is neat” and thought she did sumn LMAO
If you dig deep you realise there is more to the poem. The poem is actually about suicide and how she wants to be dead.

what do you think? i made a poem starting with her first 2 lines
Her poem “sticks” was actually quite nice until the last four lines. Completely ruined it and made it angsty self hatred, which is a common thing she likes to shove in literally anything she writes. There’s lots of problems with her writing, but specifically the angsty, edgy extreme grasp at attention that’s plaguing her work is seriously dragging her down. Mental illness is not a trend, and the attempt she’s making at making a statement to relate to youth is.. sad. It’s an obvious lack of connection to society due to her other problematic behaviors, and maybe someday when she works at her issues she may find writing to be more kind to her.
I completely agree. Literally every single Gabbie piece in this video was just absolutely drenched in edge and self-hatred and angst. It’s so overwhelming and wayy over done, and although I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having an angsty poem, hers just are not even a little bit subtle or elegant. Her writing sounds like an edgy teen dumping their feelings on tumblr, not an adult trying to tell a dark story through art. And there’s just nothing considerate about any of them, especially that last one about cutting hair. She’s so aggressive about the depression theme and it just makes it all sound like a joke. It’s very frustrating to read, I think especially as someone who has been surrounded by these very serious issues their whole life.
I agree, out of all the poems she read out in this video by Gabbie I quite liked Sticks until the obvious twist and sudden change in rhyme structure that completely distrupted the flow of the poem. Just made the last few lines difficult to read and felt rushed and I couldn't help but think she was basically saying, "I'm an edgy teenager who uses depression as a trendy personality trait"
My sister tends to lean more towards this with normal conversation and it's kind of depressing but not even in the way she's trying to be.
her music as well. 😔
very well said, I totally agree
Rewatching these Gabbie Hannah videos and writing down every insult, harassment, narcissistic abuse, and exploitation.

Gabbie deadass just looked at the click bait titles of the videos and left it at that.... if she had bothered to watch the contents of these vids she would see this is not even close to bullying. Please keep doing your thing you actually got me back into writing poetry :)
Gabbie doesn’t care. She doesn’t want good faith critique. She wants only praise. So it doesn’t matter what this video is really like; she’s going to claim it was bullying or abuse to make herself seem victimized so her fans rush to manage her emotions and ego (and buy her books).

"Cut" reminds me of those people who cut their hair in the bathroom because they're bored and call it a "mental breakdown"
She’s literally that exact person LOL I hate those people
The people that decide to call “mental breakdowns” crying for like 30 minutes over something and then posting it on social media sicken me tbh
Or maybe they try to seek comfort so much that they turn to those methods even if they seem foolish for us? I mean, people who have mental breakdowns are not easy to understand. We could speculate here all day long why they act like that and still fail to see what’s the underlying reason.
I, for one, experienced being called an attention seeker because I had cuts on my wrists back then (I stopped doing them though). They laughed at me when they get a glimpse of it. Not trying to guilt trip any of you, point of why I said this is because there might really be a good reason why people do stuff and assuming something that drags them down is just sad...
Don’t attack gays like this :(
I have actual mental issues and just chopped and dyed my hair for fun and Bc of people who change their appearance and call it a mental breakdown it makes people with actual mental issues look irrelevant Bc me chopping my hair off was just fun and completely disconnected from my mental illness but the stereotype of that still does damage
Hi Rachel, I see that you're liking comments so I hope you read this. I just wanted to say that you inspired me to read more poetry and really give it a shot. I had forgotten how much I loved it and got out of it. What's happened with Gabbie is unfortunate, and I know you know better than to equate value with "relevance" but what she said was in such poor taste and also untrue. I thought I'd let you know you're extremely relevant. Maybe to a smaller community, but it's a community you've built and retained over the years. I'm always amazed at how regularly you post and how much effort and thought goes into each video. I don't agree with all of your opinions, not always, but that doesn't take away from the value you've created in the world. Keep doing you

Yes, and Gabbie clearly didn’t put in enough effort; It’s abundantly clear. Lmao. But hey, if you genuinely liked it & thought she did a good job, that’s cool & you’re entitled to your opinion. You can also still be a fan of someone even if they do something you don’t like or don’t think they did very well on.
So this is what Gabbie had a Twitter and Instagram tantrum about?
Ye
I'm so very late, but I feel like poetry is using the subtle quirks of human language to communicate human experience. It can be plain language, of course, but there's a difference between "I love you" and "stars are born inside my chest every time i speak your name". This just doesn't read (to me) that it's trying to communicate anything deeper, it feels like tweets that happen to rhyme. And that's what really disappointed me.
I remember her releasing this and being like, “I’m like 16, Gabbie is like 26....ma’am you are an adult.”
big yikes, does she think she's a teen?

Gabbie clearly hasn't watched this video. I went in expecting a fun video where I would laugh at the stupid things in that book and came out with a renewed interest in poetry and all of its nuances. You were weren't rude, weren't even blunt, you were very constructive and educated. Clearly Gabbie has only seen the title of this video, which is so brash because, well, clickbait. Its kind of necessary to reel people in. But you get way more than you're actually expecting.
Which could mean she's doing it for clout without giving an ounce of care to whoever she wants to take down with her. Malicious and toxic behavior as hell
Watching this after gabbie went on her rampage and honestly... I feel like she has never seen any of your videos, and definetly not the ones about her book. Your videos are really informative and entertaining, which is never easy. I actually really liked gabbie up until now, I'm kind of glad she showed her true colors. Same here! Glad I came here and subscribed!
i'm bad at poetry but i didn't think to write a whole book to tell y'all
Im sure your poetry is great. Most great artists dont appreciate their own work lol :)
damn
Wow, I didn’t realize how bad her poetry was until now lol as someone who also struggles with self harm, the “cut” poem does feel very insensitive and demeaning in a way, but something that I find interesting is that Gabbie has talked about it being very hard for her to cut her hair, since she’s used it almost as a security blanket her whole life or as a thing to hide behind. So perhaps she’s trying to draw a parallel between the pain of cutting her hair and the trauma of self harm? Which i think is uhhh,,, sorta yikess
TheRenFiles Yo, as the one who cut myself in past AND cut hair, it’s not that painful? I do value my hair a lot, it’s very fluffy and curls more and more each day, but when I cut my braids, the only pain I felt is a pain from hair piercing my eyes. She’s just overdramatizes everything she sees.
*major yikes
TheRenFiles I never self harmed but I do understand the feeling of needing your hair to hide under or use to cope with anxiety or insecurities and I guess I can understand how that could be related to the feelings that fuel self harm (anxiety depression etc) but I think it's pretty insensitive to compare the two like that especially if you've never experienced self harming
I hated that poem so much, even when I enjoyed Gabbie Hanna. I stopped reading the book only a day after getting it because it made me feel...gross. She makes it seem like she's talking about the struggle of self-harm...then switches it to her hair? Like Gabbie, I use my hair as a security blanket, but I wouldn't act like I'm hurting myself or taking my life because I'm cutting it...that's fucked up
that depends. i didnt watch the vid yet, but cutting ur hair can actually b traumatic for some people. ur sole experience is not representative for everyone else. idk if thats the case for gabby but ive seen ppl talk abt trauma related to their hair.
I can't believe gabbie openly admitted to NOT watching any of these, not only is this the BEST criticism I've ever seen, but even if she didn't say any of her first points (that are so incredibly helpful that IM considering writing again and I haven't done that since I was 15) the one mocking self harm is just flat out disrespectful and if eye were a gabbie fan id be demanding an apology for having me spend money on some shit like that
Hope your writing goes well! 💕
