    Now this tree is providing you with some good projects.
    Good tip about letting the cut section dry out for a while to kill any remaing cambium cells, this i haven't tried yet.
    I'm a big fan of using pots for air layers, as long as I am usually nearby to monitor the moisture on a day to day basis, but that is a very very wide and shallow pot for an air layer 😂, though I have no doubts it'll work, it just caught me off gaurd a little.
    Now im itching to start my layering for this year.

    • @acer_p_bonsai
      @acer_p_bonsai  Před měsícem +1

      Haha, yeah I’m stoked about the base of this one, in particular. When I dug it up, it was buried past the graft with only a few sparse branches so there was no obvious sign that it had a sumo stump. I kept digging deeper and bam 💥 there it was, and all the lower 1-2” roots were rotten.
      I consider myself pretty good at keeping maples alive, but I was worried about this one…all the remaining leaves self defoliated after the transplant, and had to drive it from SC to NY in a shitty nursery can in the passenger seat of the civic. Luckily it sprung up a weak second flush of leaves, and I was able to nurse it back over the autumn. 😅
      What varieties are you layering this year?

    • @DeciduousSnurb
      @DeciduousSnurb Před měsícem +1

      @@acer_p_bonsai Dang you hauled that tree quite a distance. Glad to see it turned out healthy.
      I will probably be air layering (Maples) 'Seiryu' and 'Ukigumo' since they've worked out for me last year. 'Ukigumo' 1.25" trunk rooted absolutely crazy for me and my tree was in pretty good shade too which was surprising.
      Flame Amur maple I'm also going to try. It is only pencil thick which is small but I was wanting to fuse an air layered portion of the original to make a twin trunk over time. I previously had a different twin trunk Amur from a local nursery that had an awesome root base, though not perfect. Months later I was bummed to find it had verticillium wilt and couldn't go on with it. So I'm hoping to style the new one as a twin.
      Japanese Black Pine is another one I'll be doing, though only .5" - .75" stems it's a good way to get more JBP to mess with in a relatively short amount of time. I'm only doing 2 of those this year as I already have over a dozen 😬
      Oh and the top my Bald Cypress that I'm growing out in ground.
      So nothing as thick as your air layers this year, but in time.

    • @acer_p_bonsai
      @acer_p_bonsai  Před měsícem +1

      That’s awesome! I’ve heard a lot of back and forth about air layering JBP. My gut tells me it will work well, just takes patience and care. Thinking about trying one on a little Kotobuki I picked up last year, since it has a horrible graft maybe I can get a few little clones off it. 😂

    SOLID VIDEO with a great view of how you approach doing an airlayer!! I'm a visual learner and appreciate watching AND listening to. What sort of placement in your garden will this tree be placed whilst the tree does "its thing" and produce new roots? Morning sun, dappled sun, full sun, no sun?? I have only tried 2 layers before, 1 survived barely and the other failed completely. I think my placement/aftercare could've and should've been better........ thanks for sharing how you do an airlayer. I want to become proficient at layering before I try it on some nicer trees i have.

    • @acer_p_bonsai
      @acer_p_bonsai  Před měsícem

      I leave it right in the same spot I had it. Morning sun, shade after 1pm. As for after care, I water it daily like the rest of my trees. If you go for the typical plastic wrapped air layer, the goal is to get the moss moist, but not too wet, then seal it in nearly completely, or with just a few holes at the bottom. With this open setup, we have it set up with well draining media so it will always get plenty of aeration, and need to focus more on making sure it doesn’t dry out. We’re already heating up here in VA, but the humidity has been high, perfect weather for growing new roots.
      Good luck with your airlayer project!! If any questions come up, feel free to DM me on Instagram (same username). 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁

  • @kirliyapag1641
    @kirliyapag1641 Před měsícem +1

    Why did you leave the lower portion of the cut exposed? Won't xylem fibers dry out and kill the upper portion? That's the only thing that keeps it alive until the upper part produces it's own roots right?

    • @acer_p_bonsai
      @acer_p_bonsai  Před měsícem

      Possibly one or two layers of xylem could dry out, but it will not kill the tree for quite a long time. Even if I didn’t try rooting the top part, it would probably live for 2-3 years completely bare. I guess I could have added a little cut putty around the lower edge of the cut, but I don’t plan on keeping most of the middle of this tree unless is sprouts a bunch of nice branches. Trees are surprisingly good at self-compartmentalizing, and for this sort of operation I wouldn’t waste the cut putty. I have another bonsai that I will be layering soon, with an extremely valuable base, so will be treating that tree like it’s going in for open heart surgery. 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁

      I’ll definitely keep you updated, good or bad! 🙊 Ive had high success with air layers…probably over 90%. Each failure has been on either a weak cultivar or with a problem I could specifically identify. The biggest issue I’ve dealt with was excess moisture. We want it damp but not soaked! 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁

  • @rebeccahunter725
    @rebeccahunter725 Před měsícem +1

    It has taken me a while to watch this all the way through - too many interruptions! I am very interested to see that you did not fully enclose the whole cut area for the layer. Every other one I have seen has fully enclosed the cuts. I have had good success with the bag - and fully covering the wound. I wait eagerly to see these results! I am also interested in the use of the training pot right off the bat. Harder to keep moist, but easier to transition to it's next pot . . .

    • @acer_p_bonsai
      @acer_p_bonsai  Před měsícem +1

      Thanks for watching! And yeah…I encourage you to question the “why” of a technique, and examine the physiological process underlying success.
      You’re right that the closed bag is a very successful technique, I think it’s because when done correctly, you seal the wound with a “perfect” amount of moisture.
      I’ve found that it causes the roots to grow bunched up into a ball shape (to the inside edge of the plastic bag. These can be somewhat brittle and break when trying to pot the layer up. Regarding the sealing off of the entire cut, there might be a slight benefit of protecting the lower cut edge from infection, but in my experience on larger layers, they are going to die back anyway with or without the wrap/protection (a bit less for trees in the ground, because they are more vigorous but nearly always die back at least one node. The only example of this not happening was not on a layer, but on a cut branch of my Kiyohime pre bonsai…I cut a 1/2” branch and it healed right over the flat cut branch; wow! Probably a result of the extremely high fertilizer at the nursery.)
      One possible benefit of leaving that lower end of the wound exposed is that a few layers of xylem will start to dry out at the top end of the lower tree. This will slightly restrict water flow, and therefore encourage new root growth in the layer.
      This also being such a large air layer, I’m going to need to grow the roots out for probably a full year, or possibly 2 full growing seasons before removing it. I figured starting it straight away in a can would get me the roots growing the way I want, and set the layer up so it doesn’t need any sort of repot/up-pot until I separate it.
      The most important concept of the entire process is that once we’ve severed the phloem (and cambium) the upper tree is only receiving water and minerals from the lower tree. All of the sugar/energy to heal and grow roots comes from above the cut. Look up some of the Japanese videos, and you’ll see that it’s very common to use open containers for air layers.

    • @rebeccahunter725
      @rebeccahunter725 Před měsícem +1

      @@acer_p_bonsai So true about that frustrating little ball of roots; it then requires a bit of corrective pruning to get it flowing well.
      I might give this technique a go next spring (moving into winter here in Australia) and see how I like the results. Nothing as big as this one, I have to say!
