  • Michael Palmer walks us through how he inspects one of his Nuc hives. He gives an excellent overview of what he looks for in a hive as he is approaching winter and what the hive may require. Filmed September 4, 2013 at French Hill Apiaries in St. Albans, VT.

    An empty frame can be loaded with sugar syrup and added into the hive as a supplement.

    Did he just put the frame with the queen on the ground ? Regardless, very informative video. I like the NUC design and will have to check into them.

    Seems like some of the cells with the pinholes could have been larvae that were not quite finished being capped, and therefore healthy. Cells torn around the area had bees in similar, if not the same period of life-stage. Thoughts?

    How much should the nucs weigh in order to determine how much 2-1 syrup to feed? Mike indicates in other videos that a full hive is supposed to weigh 160 lbs. For every 10 lbs below, a gallon of syrup is provided during early to mid fall.

    Dont you have problems with two year old queens swarming?Im thinking of just changing out my queens yearly.What do you think?

  • @tohottohoot
    @tohottohoot Před 10 lety +1

    Would someone please explain to me why the queens don't go into the lower deep and switch sides or get killed or be killed? What is the purpose of the lower deep? I want to do this but don't understand the reason for and use of the bottom deep.

    • @flewster
      @flewster Před 8 lety +4

      +tohottohoot because the lower deep is also divided into two boxes. There is a divider that runs all the way to the bottom blocking both sides from each other. Each side has its own entrance.

    He put the frame with the queen on it on the ground without shaking her into the hive??

    Does Mr. Palmer sell these nucs? They look like good bees for my area, and I would love to add some new genetics to my yard.

  • @jlfarlow0311
    @jlfarlow0311 Před 9 lety

    I heard Mr. Palmer speak of "Mummy" appearing in the brood, which I'm assuming is adult bees that are dead under a capped cell or a cell with a pin hole. I have found only two in my hive that were in close proximity that matched this description. But at looking for the reason of this or the particular disease that causes this, I can find nothing. What is the cause and cure for this? Thanks for your time.

      jlfarlow0311 Re-queening is the first approach, however, sometimes a very strong hive can resolve this issue by themselves.

    I am going to start getting stung at least once a month to prevent possible fatal allergy, Where do you recommend? Im thinking a large muscle would be better, like quad or butt? Or hand or forearm?

    I don't get why you would use double nucs instead of just using regular full size deeps. Is he raising colonies of nucs to sell? Would think otherwise that it would be easier to just work with regular standard size hive bodies...

    you wouldn't work without gloves on southern European bees, I can assure you that!

      I wouldn't say it's about being a pussy, it's about knowing how to work around bees that get riled up easy. Move purposefully, but not erratically. Yes every now and again you get a colony of bees where the bees just pour out like water. I just had one today that did that to me. Well, it's time to split that hive and maybe let them requeen themselves. For this one which really didn't want to be worked, I just swapped locations with a weaker colony and I'll go back in tomorrow to do what I needed to do.
