Your description is wrong. Army Air Corps Staff Sgt. Leslie Edwards wasn't a pilot he was a aircraft mechanic. Edwards a Tuskegee Airmen and the last surviving member of the 477th. Bombardment Group.

As a german I truly respect US WWII veterans - A man of honor is a man that doesnt want the war but still fights when hes needed.

Rest in peace to SSgt Leslie Edwards (1925-2019) it should be imperative that our history is not lost. First hand accounts from incredible men and women like him are so important. If your elders served in in WWII or Vietnam please please please talk to them, learn about what they went through, learn about the sacrifices they had to make. I was a stupid kid when my grand passed and it still haunts me to this very day looking at his medals, no one ever bothered to document what he went through.

Some people just don't know about these great heroes. Tuskegee airmen elevated themselves above racism, to do an immaculate job, requiring the greatest of skill and courage for an ungrateful Nation. Yet they were held in the highest of esteem by their brother airmen of all colors in the Bomber service. These guys never lost a single bomber that was under their protection. They were well loved, highly competent, greatly respected and even socially accepted during a time of total discrimination. These are REAL MEN of the highest caliber regardless of race or any other measure.

A large number of tears run down my face for this great man and what he did for this country. He makes me think about my grandfather who was a bombardier on a B-29 and my time I spent with him when he raised me. No matter how this country treated him he still had a flagpole in front of his house and taught me to never let the flag hit the ground and how to fold it. Man, this video hit me hard today in remembrance of him. Salute to SSgt Leslie Edwards and Mr. Sammie Berry (my grandfather).

Being a medically retired combat Veteran, watching this WWII Veterans Reactions of the F-22 and then hearing what he has to say after. I had a HUGE smile on my face the whole time (not as big as his) and goosebumps trying to imagine the AWESOME sounds of the P-51's Merlin engine as they flew over HIS head on THEIR combat missions. This man IS a Living Legend and History Book.
My Daddy was also in WWII. He passed away a few years ago.. I miss my dad... Go Martin !!

I am from Poland. My family was fighting against Germans and Russians, some of them were at German death camps and some of them were murdered by Russians and Polish People Secret Services after World War II when Poland was in the area of Soviet influence and communists wanted to kill everybody who was 'an enemy of
communist government'.
My uncle serviced in 317 sqn of Royal Air Force when Poland dissapeared from the map and was devided on german and russian sides. After coming back to Poland after war, he was arrested as 'an enemy from the West' and got tortured. His brother also was arrested because of that and murdered. Honestly, we still don't know where he was burried in real.
roger mawby My grandfather was a tail gunner in the Pacific on a Douglas Dauntless dive bomber. I vaguely remember one specific day where he shared some memories but he never really brought it up. He told me on one mission almost half his squadron was taken out and he lost some good friends. He passed away a few years ago when I was 18. Unfortunately he became a heavy drinker after the war, I think to drown out some of the memories. We went through his safe in his home and found all of his metals, his old uniform, pictures of his squadron, and even some old rounds from what I'm guessing was ammunition for the tail gun. I miss him so much, and wish I could've heard some more stories. He said every mission they went up he'd pack his mouth full of chewing tobacco because it would help with the exhaust/engine fumes and help keep the edge off. I miss you Grandpa Donald. Thank you for your service.

Not to take anything away from his honorable service, but SSgt. Edwards never served overseas during WWII. He was an aircraft mechanic stationed near Detroit, Michigan and later at Louisville, Kentucky.
He was part of the greatest generation. You must be proud of him.

My grandfather was flying a B-24 and it was severely damaged over Italy. They lost two engines and had to toss everything they could out just to keep airborne. That included the guns. Knowing that if even one German showed up they'd just jump out...they had little hope. They then saw a ME109 headed for them but out of nowhere came two P51's and gave chase. They then turned around, told them that they were their escort for as long as they needed them. Red Tails...He never forgot them.

My grandpa is a 92 year old ww2 vet. He fought in North Africa as a radio man on the frontlines calling in positions for artillery and bombers to fire upon. He has a giant Nazi flag banner that he and his squadron took down from a building after taking it over. He’s showed it to me a few Christmases ago...still dirty from the day he took it and has about 3-4 bullet holes in it, honestly probably the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. He’s by far the greatest man I’ll ever know

thats because they have no work ethic when they get back home and also a guy in the air force could be a helicopter mechanic but only have ONE JOB and thats to replace parts on helicopters and so when he gets back he says he worked on helicopters but he only changed like one part where as another guy on his team changed out all the electrical while he might only fill the tires with are XD main reason theres no work ethic when they get back

We had a Tuskegee Airman here in the ROK who passed away a few years ago. He was an honored member of the community. He was my auto insurance provider since the early '80s.

This Veteran belongs to the so called “Greatest Generation” respect to those young mans who served in that horrible war, WW2
Leslie Edwards was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Memphis Tennessee. He was the youngest of three children, his father was bellhop and his mother looked after the children. The family moved from Memphis to Cincinnati in 1925. Before dropping out of high school in 1938, he attended Harriet Beecher Stowe School in Cincinnati Ohio. He worked at several jobs before settling at Khan’s Packinghouse in 1941. He married Anne Mae Green in 1943.
He was drafted into the Army Air Corp in 1943. His basic training was at Sheppard Field Texas. After basic, he was train on aircraft engine mechanics for medium bombers. Following training he was assigned to Selfridge Field outside Detroit where he worked on bombers belonging to the 477th Bombardment Group Medium. There were four Tuskegee Airmen bomber squadrons during WWII (616th, 617th, 618th and 619th) that were organized under the 477th Bomb Group they were slated for combat in the Pacific Theater but WWII ended before their deployment.
In 1944, Leslie Edwards was reassigned to Godman Field outside Louisville, KY. There he was made the Flight Chief of Flight A of the 617 Bomb Squadron responsible for maintaining the five B-25 bombers assigned to the squadron. In 1945, he was reassigned to Freeman Field in Seymour Indiana. Also in 1945 the 477th was ordered back to Godman. The returning Tuskegee Airmen fighter squadrons and group were combined with the bomber squadrons and group to become the 477th Composite Group with its headquarters at Godman Field in Kentucky SSgt Leslie Edwards Jr. was discharged in 1945.

Facu330 Perez Dreher; Great respect for the Tuskegee Airmen! I always wanted Carrol Shelby to sign the dash in my 68' Ford Mustang (named after the P-51 Mustang fighter planes) but couldn't afford the requested donation to his children's heart fund. And now he's gone. Just last summer I had the great honor of meeting a friend of a friend who is 86 years old and was a Korean War era P-51 Mustang pilot. He flew, and survived being shot down in one. He was later trained to fly a F-86 Sabre, another of my favorites. Long story short, and after several rides in my car, I asked him if he'd sign my dash for me...... and he cried. After returning to his home in Texas, Joe sent me a picture of his P-51 'Little Joe.' I had it made into a dash plaque that is now affixed next to his name. I am the one who is truly honored. On a side note, has anyone seen a picture of the tribute Mustang that Ford produced in honor of the Tuskegee Red Tails?

your tather is a great vet veteran. im dutch and my granddad fought in the ww2 war against germany and later he went to indonesia (it was part of netherlands) against the Japanse . My granddad never talked about it and never became the never person before the war. Rest in peace my friend, your duties will never be forgotten. Btw, he loved Indonesia, he said it was such a beautiful country with friendly people but he had no choice to defend it

Look, I have great respect for all the U.S. military that served in WWII, but especially for the Tuskegee Airmen, the Nisei Soldiers and the Navaho and Cherokee Code Talkers who fought for a nation that didn't want them except when they needed them.

I’ve met and talked to a ww2 veteran who was at Pearl Harbor it was fascinating listening to him go on about the war and what he did he passed away from here a year ago he commanded my grandpa when he joined the army in 1972. I’m going to miss his story’s about the war but he’s in a better place now

It's not that hard. Go to the grocery store on Memorial Day. Usually have veterans out front with fabric poppy flowers selling or requesting donations. My dad was in WW2. I always stop and chat up the WW2 vets, but their dying off fast. So don't procrastinate. Or call the VA and tell them you'd like to meet them and maybe volunteer some of your time if you can to help them. You'll be glad you showed these old boys respect and admiration. They deserve it. As do all veterans in some fashion.

There's a lot of wisdom under that hat. I'm glad you shared part of his observations with us. My son and I got to shake hands with several WWII vets at an airshow a few years ago. At one point I said I was honored that they took a moment to let us intrude. Three of them pointed at one guy in a flight jacket and said that I can consider myself honored after shaking his his hand because he saved their lives. They were in a hurry to get somewhere so I didn't get names or the story, but I had goosebumps.

Had one of these fly over my head low and fast during airshow practice and nothing beats that sense of power. The way the ground shakes and the sound of the afterburner bounces off near by buildings gives me chills. I was lucky enough to go to the gathering of mustangs and legends and meet some of the Tuskegee Airman. It was a great honor I will never forget.
