  • In this "Trash to TREASURE" episode I am taking 2 old scarves and a fabric remnant from a previous project (bow cardigan from 2 years ago) and sewing a beautiful top with statement sleeves! You can easily turn this into a thrifted project where you can thrift a sweater and replace sleeves with beautiful fabric OR maybe you have an old sweater that is just begging for a new sleeve? Either way, I hope you enjoy this video and that it gives you new ideas for sewing, upcycling, thrift flipping and scrap busting :)

    WOW!!! This is such an inspiration piece! You have taken something basic and the scarves with meaning from your past and turned it into a VERY High End top that would have cost you hundreds of dollars in the shops. You get a standing ovation from me! Well Done!

    Thank you so much for your videos!! You have really inspired me to create garments for myself!! I have a hard time finding clothes that fit me just right and I am thrilled to be able to custom make some for myself. I have sewn very little since I was a kid in 4H, but it is coming back to me!! I wanted to add a tip that is working like a dream for me. Because I am relatively inexperienced with sewing, I have been using landscape fabric to make test garments. I can get 4ftx50 yards of it at the local home improvement store for around $7 and it can be sewn on a machine. SO I can make a really cheap mock up to make sure the pattern is correct. I have taken to cutting the patterns out of the landscape material as it is easier to pin through than the paper I was using. Thought I would share with everyone. Can't wait to see what the next projects would be!

    I love how you're making more upcycling / altering videos. In this age of massive consumerism, wastage and climate change, many of us have lots of clothes that we don't wear. It's nice to learn proper techiques to upcycle those clothes, instead of the dubious methods employed by content creators who have hardly any knowledge about tailoring.

    Oh Alisa, you are so tiny and talented! You can take a brown paper bag and make it beautiful on you 🤩 I’m so glad did demonstrate putting knit and something non stretchy together because I actually tried it only because that’s the two fabrics I wanted together (because I don’t like showing my arms) not because I knew what I was doing 😆🤪 but, it came out ok 🤷🏻‍♀️and I wore it to my friends son’s wedding.

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  Před 2 lety

      Noooooooo, a paper bag would still be a paper bag on me, lol :) thank you for a sweet comment! Yeah, gotta be careful when working with knits and woven in one garment, just have to keep in mind the ease, and the properties of the garment, what needs the stretch and what does not, what stitch to sew it with, but other than that - it is doable :)

    People will come at you for using a serger on lace?! ... Oh, yeah I guess some might, but hopefully not, sometimes serged stitches blend in with lace better than any other set of stitches and, ultimately, look very neat which I think is the biggest detractor to dome finishes (e.g., some finishes on lace make this beautiful open weave fabric look really messy). I think it's amazing and I appreciate the way you've considered the different strerch kennels of the fabric. I worked at Mavy's a few years back and got fascinated by these tops that combined a satin with a super stretchy knit. They were lovely too look at, but we on the floor noticed that the seams began pulling out where the fabrics were joined becauae the stretch was so different between the two fabrics. Not as much of a problem with a stable/beefy knit and a lace (which has a bit more give anyway). Another way I think this could be done is to work with on bias cuts of woven fabric. Piecing can help get the most out of bias folded fabric. For anyone still reading this long comment, Alissa's vid on color blocking is a great intoduction to piecing/adding style lines to your personal patterns.
