    Great video guys. Just as a heads up it's a "cold shoe" not a "hot shoe." A hot shoe refers to a shoe that has power or some sort of electronic connection.

    Actually, smallrig has more options when it comes to SSDs.
    1. The standard T5 clamp.
    2. A wooden NATO handle that has a built in casing where the T5 slides in. The advantage it has though, is that you can flip it to use on either sides unlike the Tilta.
    3. A clamp very similar to the first option. It holds on to the SSD like a mobile phone clamp. The advantage being, it's not exclusive to T5 and you can use T5s, angelbirds, seagates and other compact SSDs. It can also be used as a power supply option for mirrorless cameras as you can also mount a power bank or in fact a cellphone to remotely control the bmpcc
    I went for the second option for my smallrig cage and has the sunhood mount T5 for my Tilta. I personally would prefer the smallrig as I can use most of the parts except for the cage itself on any camera with any cage. Plus it's basically lego where the possibilities of customising your rig are endless. I in fact made the very tilta v-mount baseplate shown here using parts that smallrig is already selling for a third of the price. With the Tiltas it's sort of a closed environment with very few options that work universally.
    Although both the brands are top notch in terms of quality and Tilta definitely feels a lot more premium in terms of finish. And if someone's happy in the ecosystem and plans to keep buying a rig for every new system, Tilta is fantastic.
    This was a very fair and fun comparison.

    right on great video guys, i built my rig up with all smallrig (cage, wooden side and top handles, lens support, 13mm rod top plate, 2 carbon fibre rods, cable clamp, speedbooster to cage lock, I custom fit a vmount cheese plate with a double 13mm rod attachment (so i can lay vmount flat and counterweight), 7" articulating arm (for mounting aputure mc) and the smaller black handle for the other side handle), universal ssd holder and finally I have the swivel tilt cold mount for holding the monitor on the top wooden handle or the clamp on attachment to attach monitor to tripod. Then I have shape (135wh vmount, follow focus), metabones for bmpcc4k and sigma art 18-35, atomos shinobi and the manfrotto 504hd tripod head and legs. If it wasn't for guys like you I would not know of all these awesome rigging options so cheers!

    Smallrig has upped their game a lot, there is now a bracket like the tilta for the hdmi and usb-c port and they have new improved ssd holders and more top handle options. I feel like smallrig just allows more flexibility but tilta has a great ready to go package if you go all tilta

    @AustralianImage Před 4 lety +4

    Not sure how I came across this, but as a 2x BMPCC4K owner, it's always interesting to see how others have rigged their cameras. Yours is a pretty fair and reasonable assessment of both systems, though I think SmallRig offers more versatility because they don't use any propriety parts. I use a mix of SmallRig, Camvate and Tilta gear.
    I'm curious as to why you considered the Tilta cable management system better, as with the way the right angle connector works, it leaves the USB-C cable and especially the HDMI cable quite vulnerable, sticking out the rear as it does. The HDMI cable is susceptible to knocks from both the side and back, as it's completely unprotected.
    And remove those rubber covers, they serve no purpose once you start rigging the BMPCC4K.

    • @AustralianImage
      @AustralianImage Před 4 lety

      @PRIVATE I'm working on a video that shows my two rigs as they have now come together after owning my first BMPCC4K since Oct 2018. Both have gone through various iterations. It might surprise some at how compact the rigs can get, especially my run and gun one with monitor, mic etc and yet allow up to 4 hours continuous shooting. Nor does it look like Frankenstein's Monster.
      I will also have some interesting information about power options for the BMPCC4K that makes a mockery of all the bleating that has gone on about the BMPCC4k since it was released.

    • @AustralianImage
      @AustralianImage Před 4 lety

      @PRIVATE Thanks. I know what you mean about gear acquisition, though sometimes that's the only way to realise what you do and don't need. I have similar feelings about gimbals and I've thrown an idea to one gimbal manufacturer that, if fully workable and taken up, could change the gimbal world dramatically. I'll talk about that in my video as well. I'm still waiting for a couple of small parts that I want to test out and include in my video, which hopefully will arrive fairly soon.

    It looks like the NPF power solution is mounted to the rails while sitting in between the camvate lower piece? Can you clarify how you mounted the NPF power plate?

    • @threefoldtv
      @threefoldtv  Před 4 lety +1

      So its a bit odd how I mounted it but basically I took a small 2in 15mm rail and then used a male 1/4 20 to male 1/4 20 adapter and screwed it into the 2in 15mm rail. That 2in rail then got screwed vertically into the underside of the quick release plate right in the middle (between the 2 long 15 mm rails.Then i used a 15mm rod clamp and attached the NPF battery plate to that and that got attached to the 2in 15mm rail.
      The longer 15mm rails end up sitting flush on the back of the NPF plate making it look like its attached to the long 15mm rails, although its not actually attached there they do help give it extra support. Hopefully this makes sense? If it doesn't i can try and take a few pictures to help clarify!

    I guess there are a few changes e.g small rig do a 90 degree hdmi /usbc adapter for their cages, p4k is already wide. The small rig sunshade is not just friction there is magnets in there. There is one big problem with tilta and Smallrig mounting holes tilta puts them on the front and smallrig on the side . e.g the follow focus rod mount for tilta goes on the cage front and needs a different mount on the side for smallrig.

      One could of course scrape/machine that off with some hardware but still. On the other hand, you can build literally the same by yourself with a v-mount plate or v-lock mount, a couple of 3/6" rods, railblock, a cheeseplate for the base and some basic lego skills,
