Garrison is the perfect builder gun!
That’s what I did with mine, went with all new billet hand for internals, new grips, Stan Chen mag well, 10-8 sights, full length guide rod, along with other stuff, now I have an amazing gun that was very economical and trigger and feel punches well above its price point, hand down one of my favorite guns to run. I stripped the hot blue as I love that old school cold blue.
Thanks for your review and thoughts on this gun, as always. This one though is particularly timely as it's exactly the gun I've been considering recently. I stupidly sold my SA Loaded 1911 a long time ago and I've been looking at grabbing a new steel frame commander when I found one I liked. I didn't want a bunch of tactical stuff on it. I wanted a great bluing job, solid quality polished, ramped barrel, non-ambi safety, nice tight fit and did I mention forged STEEL? Yeah, this one's pretty much everything I was looking for with nothing I didn't want. Oh and I also ordered a nice set of Lok grips with your humble code also. Thanks for everything, Sir!
I was surprised to learn that Springfield had not made a Garrison Commander in the past. They make Commander variants of other of their models and they made the Champion model that looks a lot like the current Garrison Commander. Nevertheless the thing looks really good and I was glad to see that you had no problems with it.
The commander has always been my absolute favorite size in the 1911. I just picked up the Springfield mil spec and love it. I've decided I will definitely be picking up the Garrison, I just can't decide on stainless or blued! They're both so damn stunning. I've always loved the more classic, uniform models. Nothing overly flashy or tactical, just a well built and dependable gun.

My 5" has had no issues after a case, save for one wilson mag that would always cause a malfunction on the last round. Trigger pretty good and very accurate.

First thing Id do is add pads to the stocks mags and an EGW ignition kit.
Garrison is the best value 1911 on the market. Yes, other brands are cheaper but for forged frame/slide, fitment, and warranty from domestic manufacturers are unmatched at this price point.
I'd like to see the TRP soon.
I'm really moving away from striker fired to 1911 styles. Beautiful guns

I’ve got a 5” Ronin in 9mm. Looks amazing but my sights were off too, and despite removing the set screw, neither I nor my Green Beret buddy could drift that stinking sight. 😂
I also have had the occasional problem with it needing a shove to go back into battery.
It is excellent otherwise, but the Bul for the same price just runs like a Glock straight out of the box so I’d do that if I had a do over. My Ronin wins on looks though - it’s gorgeous!

I would love to see you review the gen2 of the Archon Type B, now that it's optics ready and everything. And there is an even newer version in Italy, the XDB Rapax Sport, that you should take a look at once it gets imported.
Those low bore axis non Browning tilt action systems are super cool to me.

Hi David, I think you missed a pretty important difference between the Garrison and the Ronin.
The Ronin Commanders are all Aluminum Frames.
Still Steel (Stainless) on the Government Length though.

As another father, just getting into uspsa, how do you work on dry fire in the house? It seems like I’ve been doing in early morning or evenings after bed. Even tho I don’t have any live ammo, I just don’t feel comfortable having them see it (even tho I could get so much dry fire in during their play time haha).
I started waking up early - before everyone
Always use a laser bullet (Gsight ELMS, Pink Rhino, etc…) and then you know you are safe and it’s fun because you can see your point of impact vs your point of aim.
MantisX makes it even more productive if you have a pic rail and they have laser academy too.

Can't agree about the Ruger SR1911. I just picked up a Ruger Lightweight Commander in .45 ACP and the slide is tight and over all fit and finish is very good. I could not find any flaws at all. Then again, I would imagine there are sample variations from both manufacturers.

Love the pistol. Yes! If we are paying a LARGE AMOUNT of money for a firearm, it should be at least ( 3 ) magazines come with it. As much as I love my Springfield M1A socom 16. Only getting one 10 magazine for 1,800$. Let's go! Springfield. Give your customers ( 3 ) magazines.

Nice rundown on the Garrison, though it feels like Springfield is squeezing the juice out of its older 1911 line until they decide to make a TRP or TRP commander in 9mm or Staccato C2 or CS version of the Prodigy. Bet the farm on it.

Talon grips has a $5 piece of front strap grip tape that makes this pistol incredibly more shootable. Huge upgrade for almost nothing.

Because I didn’t pull it apart until after- I pulled the safety and firing pin stop and they are MIM - I don’t think this is new information

Off topic. I like how cz is making 2011's with cz mags. I wish s&w made theirs with m&p mags, sig with p320 mags, Ruger with security 9 mags, ect. The standard 2011 mag is way too overpriced for it being just a way to get bullets down barrels

Sir, I see that you are a profesional shooter. Does a man with your skill set worry about low capacity pistols like a 1911? Would that hinder you in a self defense scenario? Or does it not really matter at your level of shooting.
I tend to prefer double stack 9mms - I have carried 45 1911s for a couple years but it was such a pain to dress around - this was before I carried appendix.

Consider legal ramifications. If you have to fire more than 8 rounds, it becomes a lot harder to justify "self defense".
Capacity is good, don't get me wrong. Food for thought is all.
This would be an excellent AIWB carry gun. Good as is or ready for a couple tweaks.

I’d generally agree except this is really trying to be a “classic” 1911. No reason for optics on this type of gun.
I like optics, for race guns and range toys. I also like them on (modern) rifles, pump and semi shotties, and home defense weapons.
I want them nowhere near my CCWs (more footprint, more maintenance, makes finding suitable holsters harder, completely unnecessary in a quick self-defense scenario from 3-10m,) and anything classic style like single-stack 1911s and revolvers. There's plenty of options out there for you should you want pistol optimized for an optic...some of us still like the classics.
No reason to ruin the menu when everyone can get what they want, you know?
