Behind the Scenes of Waitress, the Broadway Musical

- The Balancing Act Goes behind the scenes with Broadway musical Waitress, which just embarked on its first U.S. tour. Inspired by the late Adrienne Shelly's 2007 film, Waitress tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker who dreams of escaping her small town and loveless marriage. Amber Milt sits down with Tony ® Award-winning director Diane Paulus and finds out how the all-female creative team brought this groundbreaking show to Broadway. This irresistible new hit features original music and lyrics by six-time Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles ("Brave," "Love Song"), who tells us why this project is so close to her heart.

In my heart, Kimiko will always be the best dawn
Absolutely agree
Yeah. She's really talented, and I can't imagine Dawn in any other form.
agreed
I feel like the only one here who's not here cause of Colleen and just because I've loved this play for a long time,,,,
Same
No I'm here because I love this musical not a big fan of Collen
Same
im here like 3 weeks after they announced that the show is closing😪
Jovanna Ferrer I’m here because I loved the 2007 original movie with Keri Russell.
When they talk about Earl and Jenna's relationships it made me SO MAD. it's not just 'unloving' or 'a problem's. It's abusive and that needs to not be as tabooed as it is.
The original broadway cast will always be in my heart, especially Jessie Mueller and Drew Gehling🥺❤️.
I swear, no other musical has made me laugh AND cry as much as Waitress did. It was so gorgeous, Sara Bareilles is a goddess with music, and the rest of the cast and crew brought it to life so beautifully. One of my absolute favourites!
Dave Tempe nah. It’s way more than that. But your opinion I guess
Kimiko Glenn puts the most emotion in dawn as a character, she will always be my favorite in the musical. She is so cute and her vocals are so beautiful that I cried.
Everyone is coming for Colleen
I’m proud of her and I love Colleen but once Colleen is gone you’re just going to leave the fandom, and that’s not really fair, waitress is a beautiful show, and I hope you guys don’t just come for Colleen or Todrick, appreciate the show and the music and the film, it’s honestly really interesting
Zachary Khan he’s going to play Ogie Dawn’s husband
Zachary Khan im a colleen fan but im also a musical theater fan. tbh i like a musical for the story and music people i like and know of as actors is really just a bonus.
I agree, I found the musical before Colleen, and I’ve loved it for a long time. So I’m happy that she’ll be in it, but I love and appreciate the story, the music, and the writing despite the actors.
I loved the show before Colleen was announced
True af
I remember finding out about heathers through riverdale and loving it (that’s how I ended up getting into musicals actually) and I saw comments of people complaining how everyone who is commenting on heathers is coming from riverdale and they were annoyed. I didn’t fully get it but now I do after seeing all the Colleen comments-
So sad that Waitress is closing!
Now watching any Waitress (related) videos I can before it’s all gone!
God, Jessie Mueller owns my heart. Literally keep thinking about how both Waitress productions are closed and just losing it
I hope Colleen’s career skyrocket after playing Dawn
Kevin M Abraham some day. I wish. Thay would find a way to. Make Miranda a character in a Broadway show. Lol
Uhhh, I love Collen but she doesn't have that Broadway sound, I'm sorry... She sounds like Miranda... alot... And she can stick to playing Miranda which is the best for her and for everyone
@@lunalovefine yes! That is exactly what I wa thinking! I hate how everyone is watching waitress just because coleen is in it not because they actually like the musical
James The Man am I the only one who see’s Miranda as annoying?
Boble I think she DOES have that broadway sound because I’ve heard her sing on her channel. But particularly in her role as Dawn, she had to use a southern accent, which caused her to have that super nasally voice that ended up sounding like Miranda. So I feel like if she doesn’t use that accent while singing, she could sound amazing.
Can there please be a dvd release with the original cast???
An unexpected gem for sure. Love Sara Bareilles and the musical is funny and charming and so positively refreshing.
NolaGal2601 The movie which the show is based were a bit of both things. And I’m sure this musical has retained some of that spirit and made it for today’s social climate. And in terms of Sara’s music I love Love Song and Brave
COLLEEN BALLINGER IS PLAYING DAWN ON BROADWAY
hailey irwin I Know. I’m SO HAPPy. Someone better film it!
James The Man I know!!! I’m not going to be able to go to the Broadway and so I really hope someone films it!
Olivia Dolan pretty sure filming broadway shows are illegal
The Ukulele Dude broadway films it
y’all do realise waitress isn’t all about colleen righttt
edit: im so sorry guys this is judgmental as fuck, i had no harsh intentions and now i feel bad sorry kidss
Zachary Khan yeh i love dawn as a character but if this becomes a musical for nine year olds who watch miranda songs and see it as “the musical with colleen” it’s gonna be a bit annoyin
exactly
Okay but this is Colleen’s DREAM!
Her dream is finally coming true and so we are just really happy for her. So sorry if Colleen takes the spotlight for a few months.
@@liv1985 yeah fair enough, i was being very judgmental for a while because it was all I heard but ik its my dream and i wouldnt want it ruined i feel right guilty oops
Olivia Dolan true, but we can’t forget about the show itself
WHO CAME HERE YHE SECOND COLEEN ANNOUNCED SHE WOULD BE PLAYING DAWN
Abby L omg Yh me
meee hahah
Abby L me
Yup haha
Same, so sad the women who wrote, directores, and played dawn in the movie was murdered by a stranger before it ever became famous
i felt so lucky to see these women play these characters. they introduced me to the show, having known nothing about it before watching it in my local theatre and just.. wow. they absolutely blew me away and made me CRY. i just adore desi, charity and lenne.
Coleen is great and its wonderful she's getting her shot! But I LOVE Kimiko so much, its saf to see her go.
I got to see most of the original cast (minus Keala) and it was absolutely beautiful. Such a phenomenal work of art.
Is dawn played by the same actress from orange is the new black?
Sam May I think so
Yes she is
Yes
Yes, on broadway
Yup! Kimiko Glenn. Love her as Dawn & "When He Sees Me"
I love this show with all of my heart! It kills me that I don’t live in America and will more than likely never get to see the show live lol ❤️
Jenny Murphy I know what you mean. I'm Irish and there is so many American musicals I want to watch. Like dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton and waitress and wicked and everything.
2700e5643 true!
RonW 647 I’m seeing Waitress in November and Dear Evan Hansen in January.
I'm in America and did get to see Waitress, but even if you're American you don't get to see Hamilton! The tickets go so fast that unless you're really rich, you have no chance of seeing it. I'd love to see Hamilton but have a feeling that I never will, until/unless they make a movie of it.
Carol Cyr I’m waiting for Hamilton to release the OBC filmed performance.
Saw Katherine McPhee do this in June, and it was the most incredible experience. I cried so much, and was so inspired by her beauty and talent. She is genuinely such a sweet person, meeting her at stage door was a dream come true, and she was so kind and caring. 100000000000000/10, would recommend :)))
Lenne: I'm a Capricorn
Me: wait-?????? what? how does that tie in with- never mind- okay
and I oop-
I thought the same thing. XD XD
Same lmao I got so annoyed
i’d actually do anything to play dawn
saw it in london on the west end twice this week and i'm going again next month, i loved it so much, the story is so beautiful and the whole cast were amazing. ive been listening to the soundtrack none stop this week
Sara Bareilles and Jessie Mueller ❤️
This was the first Broadway musical I have ever seen, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I would love to see it over and over, if I lived closer.
I was so excited when I found out about Desi getting this. I am excited to see what that little Kansas does in the future. She’s an amazing person
This was an amazingly awesome show loved it and all of the songs were amazingly cool
When she said im a Capricorn I felt that😭❤️
It’s a good show. But it isn’t “life changing” i thought it was marvelous. But i felt like i just watched a quirky romcom with music. I absolutely loved the music. It was the best part
Ben Clouse I strongly agree.
I don't know I respectfully disagree! It spoke closely to the idea of close female friendship being healthy, non - competitive and it taught me the idea of self love despite whatever boundaries are in your way.
Kayla Larsen I did like how the message was that you can make your own family. Also you don’t need a man to be happy. But i felt like it was almost too similar to the movie (which isn’t a bad thing). I’m a fan of shows based on movies that change it up just a little bit. This didn’t do that for me. But it’s still a good show worth seeing
@@benclouse8399 yeah see i haven't seen the movie but glad you enjoyed it! definitely one of my favorites
Ben Clouse I’ll say. Although I did feel bad for Jenna having to raise Lulu on her own with her friends to help. But the story’s overall refreshing portrait of female empowerment was well put across and forgivable.
I met dessi Oakley and did a workshop with her and she is sooooo sweet and talented!!!
i loved seeing this show and i also got to see the whole cast coming outside and the the show and i personally loved the charactor jenna
i saw this cast back in december and lemme tell y'all they are AMAZING
Is it just me or is Waitress so imotional to the point where you cry every time. Thank you Sara for making the music so imotional like you did. Like if you agree.
Bronwyn Douglass I agree! I get really emotional listening to the soundtrack
**Emotional
Amy O'Sullivan ah, the proofreader we ordered
best 9 mins of my life
Can the filmed version be shown?? 😭😭😭😭
loved this!
i cried of happiness in the end lol
I saw Dessi Oakley and she was absolutely incredible
I love the charecter Dawn.
i saw it in la and i loved it so much ahhhh
saw Desi Oakley live and she was incredible
Alexa C. I saw Christine Dwyer
I saw this cast (with Desi, Lenne, Zane Charity) and omg they were all soooo good! Desi was fantastic. Lenne was beyond hilarious.
I just got my tickets for Costa Mesa for next month this morning. Won’t miss it for the world. I’ll be careful not to crave too much for pie after the show.
Can’t wait for Colleen to be in this show
Saw it in Appleton! AMAZING TOUR CAST!
KaylaLikesBroadway I’m seeing the show this week in Costa Mesa
Everybody playing these roles are awsome but the OBC will always be the best in my opinion
I wish i got to see this😭
I saw in April for a class trip and I loved it! I plan on seeing it again next summer, with my parents!
Your school spoils you.
Indeed!
Kimiko Glenn is the best Dawn fr! Rip to Nick :((
I come hear after seeing Sara and Jason Mraz performance, the gets crazy about Waitress and now crazy about Sara and Jessie 😂
God I love Drew Gehling.
Just saw it with this cast
EmeraldJay〈3TK I’m seeing the tour next week with a different cast.
I know this is a kind of dumb question but is the food real and if it is what do they do with it after the show?
january 5th 💔💔💔
Wait-- I thought kimoko glenn was dawn?
LoveUtation Love she was in the original cast this was one of the 2017 cast’s
I’m so sad waitress will be closing soon 😕
Same. Waitress is one of those shows everyone should see!
OMG KEALA SETTLE
Didn't recognize her once she shaved
Apple Pie is the winnnn :) :) :)
i hate how they don’t talk about dawn or the other storylines...
Why did I just discover Waitress 😭
I think I have meet the girl who played Jenna
Desi doesn’t fit the role to me. Don’t get me wrong, she’s very talented. But to me, she just doesn’t fit the role of Jenna. But I’ll definitely come to see the show when it comes to philly!
Kacey Hamsher hope she proves you wrong!
Alex S. I hope she does too!
I saw her in Cleveland and she was very, very good. Her "She Used to be Mine" was absolutely heartbreaking. It was as if she was singing it for the very first time. I hope you will keep and open mind. I thought she was wonderful and she has an outstanding voice. This video doesn't do her justice.
I can also vouch for Desi. She did incredible in Kansas City, beautiful singer and hit acting notes perfectly.
I have seen Sara, Betsy, and Desi twice as Jenna. My fav was Sara, but I do think Desi comes in second, but its VERY close. Just a slight difference in interpretation that I tend to prefer in Desi. She was amazing. Both times in Cleveland for her.
I mean I love Colleen and all and I wish I could see her at Dawn but waitress isn't all about her, it's been running for a few years and has many original fans, these now self-proclaimed "fans" of colleen are likely to just leave! We know she's playing Dawn, but can we just focus on the storyline and the depth of the characters and appreciate it as it is before it leaves stage in January?
k. elizabeth stfu
@@ronnchapman7944 haha no
k. elizabeth preach!!!
k. elizabeth ok but you must realize that many people haven’t even heard about this show until Colleen. So it’s a good way of bringing more attention to the show! That’s the only important part...it doesn’t matter how an audience gets there, it’s the fact that they are there to see the show!
me
I wish it will crossover with Butterbean Cafe because both stories are about kitchen or is that Hamilton with paw patrol
WHo DisLiKEd ThIS!?!?
Annie Dancona it was Earl with 9 different accounts
I’m here for joe sugg aha
I’ve literally never heard of waitress till Colleen which is weird since it seems she’s not the main character but everyone is talking about her
(But I love Colleen no hate)
I thought the girl with the glasses was the main character
who is in the San Francisco cast?
I just saw it the other day in SF. The cast has Christine Dwyer, Jessie Shelton, Charity Angel Dawson, Ryan G Dunkin, and Larry Marshall.
thank you!
Carol Cyr I’m seeing them this week in Costa Mesa.
Before broadway, it was a movie in 2007. I love the movie.
What age is this broadway play for
Kristina Shevlin there is definitely some adult content, so use your best judgement when bringing kids.
im thinking 13-14+, maybe if its a guy 15 since they aren't super mature at 13 yet
unless its a super mature guy 😂
Kwee Griffee Or just whoever is mature enough to handle the domestic violence and sexual situations that are happening live in front of our eyes?
who are these castmembers??? where is keala, where is jessie???
This is the national tour cast
This is the tour cast!! Don’t hate on them they are just as talented!! Chill out
elisabeth nerolk they’re the tour cast members. They’re AMAZING
At this point people complaining about people here for Colleen or more annoying than the ones who are here for Colleen
Can’t wait for Colleen ballinger to be on broadway
Who else came hear for Colleen and watched the whole thing thinking "she'll pop up in any second"
I only like Jessie, no one can beat her
Those bracelets are really too much.
Ok, sassy black woman stereotype, how progressive Broadway...
piecesofme The role was originated by Keala Settle, so maybe after she left they just cast the right person for the role? 🤷🏼♀️
