I'm British (and proud of it) but even I wonder at the greatness of a man such as Lincoln - the USA was fortunate to have such a man as their leader. Furthermore, the Gettysburg address is simply one of the most beautiful speeches in the history of the English language.

In 4th grade, we were required to memorize, so that we could recite to the class from the front of the room, the preambles to both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
In addition to those two relatively short preambles, we also had to memorize the Gettysburgh Address.
Getting familiar with the ideas and values declared in preamble and testified in memorial, has provided a substrate that withstands all that could shatter our aspirations for the first democracy of the modern era.

You're right. It's easy to find the emetic in Hollywood preciousness, but Spielberg's team here is anything but. Heck, everyone in this featurette seemed to radiate Lincoln's humility.
Now I find myself wondering about the slippery business of patriotism - that thing which is humility's opposite. From its ugliness to something sweeping, if subtle, that lies in our hearts. Or maybe it's an emotion we can examine in the collective.
To exhort individual self-examination is to beg mutiny. But a lot of us are going to have to do that to fight what lies ahead - without anyone close to Lincoln's caliber to lead us.
Lol thanks for your kind forbearance in reading this.
      Paz y luz.

  • @chuckxjarhed982

It might be the finest film ever made. It took one of the most complex stories, and while remaining almost completely true to the facts, presented it to the viewer. In such a way, that you could immerse yourself in the brilliant performances and trappings of the period, Without having to concentrate on all the subplots and decipher subtle nuance, to comprehend it fully, without any lingering ambiguities or vague inferences. At the end completely understand this incident, what went in to bringing it to fruition, and how it affected those "real people" involved. Finally, in spite of the fact that, at the conclusion, 'the great leader" is dead my predominate emotion was not the melancholy that would usually accompany that "hero dies in the end" finish. It was actually uplifting and lighthearted. Maybe because the time, the deed, the history, is always larger than the man? I am not sure, but then again, I am also not Spielberg.

Actually most movies portray lincoln as sounding nothing like he did in reality, he actually did not have a deep voice and in fact according to people who heard him speak and historians he actually had a high pitch, nasally sounding voice. A lot of people actually praise the accuracy of Lincoln's voice in this movie.

In their natural habitat they literally stole the street and sidewalk-one brick at a time-ripped down the oldest house in town-for a parking lot-and schemed yo destroy the Cary House-built by Governor Bellinghamin the 1650's-rather than pay for needed repairs, and cleared the way for arsonists to burn down three of the schools-to resell the land to developers. And alongtheu way they corrupted and destroyed every veteran's civic improvement organization in town to squeeze every loose dime out of them, Be grateful they never noticed you!

Steven Spielberg is an excellent director, I first noticed it with the great job he did with the realistic detail he gave to Saving Private Ryan but more so to the movie Lincoln; its not so much like you just watching a movie, its almost as if your actually there. Maybe they should have had DDL wear shoe prosthetics to make him taller?? That is really all they could've done to make him exactly like Lincoln... but either way DDL is a genius actor and Spielberg got is so so right .... just an amazing depiction of Lincoln. I had eagerly awaited this movie. I had read "Team of Rivals" twice. I just love everything related to the XIX century, and this book by Doris Kearns Goodwin captured it so well. The movie was announced long ago with Liam Neeson as Lincoln, and when finally Daniel Day Lewis was cast and the movie went into production, I thought it was going to be really special. And it is, it's a great film. As this making of documentary proves, everyone involved really knew what they were doing: long shots, no fast editing, no big melodramatic music score, gas and natural lights,...amazing movie. I only wish they could have filmed more of the book, which is extraordinary.

I took my 10 year old son to see this film. On the way home we stopped at the new National Veterans Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. We went to the section reserved for those fallen men and women from the War in Afghanistan. My son picked a random headstone and planted a small US Flag. On this past Memorial Day my 23 year old son thanked me. I feel all 10 to 12 year old boys in America should see this great film. 🇺🇸

It indeed is a masterpiece of film and seriously underrated. Everyone should see it. One small element that makes the film what it is; they allowed Daniel Day Lewis to show the introspective part of his personality. They allowed the audience to see him spending time in thought. The “dead time” becomes SO important to understanding the character and empathizing the moment.

No one would be shocked to hear that Lincoln may have held racist views during his time. But the notion of racism is fluid, just as are all notions involving prejudice(s). What is important is to understand that, firstly, this is cinema and cinema is art, thus open to the artist's interpretation. Secondly, although holding what we now regard as backwards views, his legacy is one that will be remembered for helping achieve something none before him had, freedom. That is what's most important

Watched the movie today. Spielberg has made a brilliant film and succeeded in retelling the story behind the 15th amendment taking into account all the pitfalls of American polity in that crucial phase of history. Daniel Day-Lewis deserves all praise for his excellent performance.

This is the best movie about Lincoln I've ever seen, DDL and Sally Field are two of the best actors in the business. One of Spielberg's best films among others. Americans need another Lincoln in office today, he had a hard life but rose up and overcame, one of our greatest presidents in history

Daniel Day Lewis is a wonderful actor. He won 3 Oscars for his movie best actor. He was awesome in Last of Mohicans, with Madeline Stowe years back. Haven't seen this movie yet, hope they have it on T.V. Didn't know till now they made it.

No matter how talented, there is no living actor I can think of - and come to think of it, no actor from the past, either - who could have even come close to Daniel Day Lewis’ portrayal of Lincoln. And, I think that Sally Fields also deserves accolades for her portrayal of Mary Lincoln - a homely, rude, selfish, arrogant woman - who was more than just a little mentally unstable as well. Sally gave a great performance of a very unattractive historic figure.
In fact, all the actors in this film gave fantastic performances, in roles both major and minor.
The script, the cinematography, the editing, the set and costume design... were all incredible.
This film is, IMO, a masterpiece.

Just on actors fitting to look the part of the real life characters they played - I firmly believe that no actor ever fitted the look of the person they portrayed than Jackie Earle Haley as Alexander Stephens

I didn't even know how Alexander Stephens actually looked like. Then I googled and cursed that the movie was so good, its polluting the google searches with Jackie Earle Haley.
      I was wrong lol.

I'd recommend Sandburg's 'Lincoln' over Spielberg's. But you have to be willing to read, even for the condensed three colume vesion published for the Civil War centennial.
