      The parasite, Heterobilharzia americana, is a flatworm commonly referred to as liver fluke. Symptoms start gradually with a loss of appetite, and eventually include vomiting, diarrhea, profound weight loss, and signs of liver disease. Treatment typically involves use of multiple medications and close monitoring of the dog by a veterinarian. Your welcome.

      It involves 2 types of snails: G. cubensis and G. humilis. Both snails are infected with H. americana (a flatworm). Ask your vet about treatment. Currently suggested treatments for H americana infection are fenbendazole granules and praziquantel.

      Need more empirical evidence on the parasite. This is only one school and one professor doing the research. Not enough to make a determination that quickly. Like humans some parasites produce little and consume everything; some are the food for others; and some produce more sustenance and consume little. More info is needed on this species and that is what the professor said at the end of the report. The professor needs federal dollars to form a larger team of scientists. I’d say 30 million would do it.

    Heterobilharzia or Heterobilharzia americana; both are the same, if caught early and treated your dog will be ok, the symptoms can also mimic some forms of cancer found in dogs. As a safety do not let your dogs play or drink stagnant ground water or the same for a marsh or swamp like area. You are welcome from a dog loving Texan, your news should have given the name of the illness. It is not the snail but the parasite they carry.

      @Wormherder Před měsícem

      Racoons can carry this parasite and they can release infective eggs. However, racoons can only spread it to other locations if there are snails that can serve as intermediate hosts for the parasite. That's a key aspect of the life cycle. For now, we only know of three snails that can serve as intermediate hosts in nature; Galba cubensis, Galba humilis, and Galba schirazensis.

      Incorrect, you described Human Schistosomiasis, Canine Schistosomiasis is a different parasite. The one involved here is Heterobilharzia american,. It is indigenous to North America, particularly in the southern United States. The parasite's distribution originally centers around freshwater bodies in states like Texas, Louisiana, and Florida, where the snail intermediate hosts thrive in warm, slow-moving or stagnant water bodies.

      I have a pet fish that we’ve had for more than 10 years since someone gave it to us. It’s an Oscar and has grown very big. It actually needs a bigger tank that we won’t be getting because of cost. Have considered on so many occasions releasing it in the lake. No pet stores will take it. Nobody wants it. Only reason it hasn’t been released is because we don’t want it to die. We reason it’s domesticated and probably won’t survive if released. Will probably instantly fall prey once placed in the water. So what should we do with it if we can no longer care for it? Will be moving in 30 days and the tank is not going. So off to the lake we will go on day 30. Also a side note I never knew that the snails were a problem when released 🤔

      Heterobilharzia americana is similar to Schistosoma mansoni, but it doesn't infect people. It can infect a variety of different mammals, including dogs, but the most it can do to a person is cause a rash sometimes known as swimmer's itch. It happens when the cercariae (a skin-penetrating life stage of the parasite) burrows through the skin.

But now snails have become a Bigger Mystery,,, IS somebody responsible for doing this? I ask myself. I mean ticks are gross,,, BUT suddenly It all broke out in LYME CT. I got it, but i beat it.... But it took YEARS of rest and only natural things,,, I had an arsenal, It was a long time ago, I still have the senstivity to light. But im fine and strong again.... I took ONE round of antibiotis,,,Then i did NOT give into this PUMPING Antibiotics into people in Hospital... ALL those people got worse. I don't have any 'Quickie' method to rid yourself of those parasites. Lyme's disease is a parasite thing too. Simple treatments are still available though, Taking baking powder in water neutralizes whatever environment from waht i know,,,, Like a few tsp in water everyday. It seems so simple. I heard if you take that everyday a virus can't 'go nuts' in ur body. But people should double check it, I think apple cider vinegar works to kill bad things too,, But taking that everyday,,, That's not easy

    call me crazy, but parasites in snails is an obvious go to. They can host hundreds of parasites and other microorganisms. It'd have been nice if the reporter actually told us that it was "canine schistomiasis" instead of having to scroll down through the comments. It is very common in certain places and can be treated and cured. There. wasn't that simpler?
