I’m so glad to see you reading a Woolf! Makes me excited to get back to her too. I’ve read Mrs Dalloway, The London Scene and A Room of One’s Own (and liked them in that order, AROOO is so complex and I feel I’ll need to read it a couple more times to really grasp everything she was trying to say.)
At the moment I’m listening to The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict - A Very Short Introduction by Martin Bunton and reading City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert.
Thanks for a lovely video and introducing me to new and interesting books, as always. Have a lovely weekend!

Knitting while listening to an audiobook is the best. I've been knitting since college. My advice is to learn a new technique with every single project. Hopefully, you'll find a knitting shop near you. Quality yarns from animal fibers is waaaaaay nicer than cheap wool. Berroco makes a very affordable alpaca wool that would be great as a first winter wool sweater.

Sarah, thanks for the feedback! What a great tip! Looking at my projects so far, I have unwittingly managed to do that. 😂😂. I stumbled into set in sleeves…disastrous. But I’ve learned so so much with each project!

@@thelefthandedreader6632 It helps to find some knitting buddies. You can learn a ton from friends. Once you become a knitter you quickly realize we're everywhere. I talk to random strangers everywhere about their handknits, especially the airport. Knitters are a friendly, enthusiastic bunch. Welcome too the cult!

You’re pretty brave to start knitting with a seamless sweater! Many people (like me) started with a scarf or three. 😂 Still, it is like you said. You love to wear your crafts imperfect as they are. I am the same. (I’m STILL knitting my Esther jacket only frogged the sleeves twice…😅).
To the Lighthouse was superb. I raved about it in my videos too. However I have friends who HATED it. You definitely need to devote time and headspace to it but when you do, it’s beautiful and resonates long after.

To the Lighthouse and The Waves are my favorite Woolf. I also recommend her 2nd novel Night and Day, it’s less experimental and more in a traditional novel of manners style but the writing is so beautiful and the characters are so well written.

At 71 years, I realise I'm starting to run out of reading mileage; but one of my top goals is to ensure I read all of Virginia Woolf's novels before they punch my library ticket for that very last time. I read 'To The Lighthouse' last January and so enjoyed the writing that I read every single chapter twice before moving on to the next. Events (that I won't mention in case anyone hasn't read the novel as yet) mean that Mr Ramsay, rather then Mrs Ramsay, is the main character. He's emotionally anaesthetized by his intellect and Virginia Woolf portrays this side of him so well but, for some reason, the character I responded to most was Lily, the painter. I still have 'Jacob's Room' as my favourite work by her - but that might be mostly because it was my first Woolf read, and has been re-read two or three times since I first discovered the work in the early 1970s. Nice to see Tooki featuring - it's always fun to see four-legged members of the family appear - Gregg and his husband Joel nearly always feature (by viewer demand) their dog Teddy at the start of Gregg's videos on his Supposedly Fun book channel. Thanks for the video - kind regards, Brian.

Those Supposedly Fun videos are so much….fun! Oh I loved reading here about the Lighthouse characters! I’m just getting a glimpse now. The depth of writing! It’s unlikely anything I’ve read and very different than those other 2 books of hers I’ve read so far

  • @theeconstantreader

I definitely need to re-read "To the Lighthouse," it was my first Woolf and I was a little overwhelmed, but I think I would enjoy it so much more now. Also my brother sent me your video and said "she mentioned you!" and I went " i know!" Your videos are always a pleasure!

@@thelefthandedreader6632 I found To The Lighthouse to be a little harder to connect to, but I was also getting used to her stream of consciousness style so I think I missed a lot of the depth! I remember enjoying it but not quite getting everything. I absolutely loved “Mrs Dalloway” and “Orlando,” I found those to be easier to follow and the characters more engaging. Those converted me into a huge Virginia Woolf fan!

I think a typical, little dark, Irish writer - although, the first of his I have read so, may not be his constant. Almost has a 1984 vibe - wasn’t wild about the ending, but with the theme of the book, almost had to be that ending. Gripping and held me all the way through, ….
