The opposite is for me with PIA wireguard works fine but openvpn doesn't work at all.

NordVpn has the best kill switch. It will not only shut down your connection but any app you tell it to if the VPN connection fails.
That feature alone is the reason I went with NordVpn when ExpressVpn left me exposed without my knowledge and I got one of those ISP letters.
wireguard works fine for me on PIA
I live in the linux world for the most part. I have used both nord and pia. I personally like how simple pia is on my linux machine. No issues on wireguard. I'm going to try nord again. Hopefully it might be better on linux.
The wireguard issue is only you. I just tested pia (switched away for other reasons) and the speeds on wireguard were about on par with nord, Windscribe and proton. Try uninstalling all VPNs, reboots and only install PIA. Also with you having tested all these VPNs the drivers could easily mess with each other so I’d reccomend a second system with a fresh install or even just uninstalling all drivers and all VPNs and testing one at a time
