    "Where there's music there can be no bad thing". Cervantes

    • @AD-kv9kj
      @AD-kv9kj Před 3 lety +8

      Music has been used for millennia in dictator's rallies, to march men to war, to help condition and indoctrinate people to oppressive religious and cult ideologies, to drown out the screams of torture and rape, written and performed by people who turned out to be rapists and pedophiles... etc. So yeah, Cervantes was wrong. Not all music is necessarily good, used in good situations, created by good people or brings about goodness in the human mind. The goodness or greatness of music depends entirely on who created it, how and why it was created and what it's used for. Music in and of itself is just music... it's the music people create, the spirit behind it and what people do with that music that makes it good. The listener also interprets ideas about a piece of music according to their own experiences and feelings, so millions might adore a piece of music worldwide, for example, even though it may actually have been written by a rapist while they were drunk and with the express intention of just piping out noises that sell to make money.

    I am amazed at how harp players have such impeccable timing and rhythm. I can't say the same about pianists and guitarists. I believe that the direct contact with the strings (no picks, mallets, complicated hammer mechanisms in a piano etc.) contribute to accurate attack as well as instant muting of the strings. A massive part of musical technique is about when you stop a note after you've started it.

    • @amyturkharp
      @amyturkharp  Před 3 lety +15

      Totally agree with you about "showing the rests" - many of my harpist friends do have brilliant rhythm, but I'm not sure if it's a wider trend - I tend to put my focus on rhythm work down to having studied percussion alongside the harp. But perhaps there is something in the direct connection we have with the strings, too, that's a great observation.

    I'm seriously wondering why Justin Bieber has more subscribers than you. You're truly talented. I'm a pianist myself completed my Grade 8 in both Piano (both practical and theory) from the ABRSM, and I have a diploma for which I'm qualified to teach, but it's such a shame that I haven't touched the piano for over 12 years now, which I really regret doing so. Anyway, keep it up.

      +Wilson Kwong It's never too late to come back! Do it for love though, not because you feel you ought to. I trained classically but it took me over 15 years to realise that the more contemporary stuff was my calling. I'm sure there is a way/style of playing music that is your soul food, just don't give up searching for it! And in the mean time, you can always enjoy listening, and other musicians will thank you. Thank you for listening to me

      Great advice. I know it's an excuse, but I'm so tied up with work that I don't have time for music, and I don't even have a piano at home. The piano's at my parents' place. It's so much easier to find free time for hobbies when I was still in school, and survival has taken a toll on me that I've just realized I've spent too much time working. Anyway, I'll find a way to pick up piano again. Keep up the good work over there ...
