In the canon show, he literally stares at his own reflex in water right after he trasnforms, and it's then that he realizes he's now a super sayan. Not to mention like others said that freezers tells him his hair and eyes changed, and that his hairs literally fly in his own face while flying and fighting.
That moment were Goku tells Yamcha that he's his friend is so touching. Despite how much they shit on him, he's still a friend to them.
