  • Quick response with my 5 cents, if they might have used the thumb as lock or not. But anyway a really nice and accurate way to shoot. Try it out and let me know, what you think!

    Actually this is the only way for me to shoot a bow right or left side because of my alleged deformity in pronotion in my forearm (rare type of disability) great to know i am applying an ancient technique without knowing ;)

    Thanks for uploading this video Armin. I use the scythian draw when I have strained my thumb as an alternative to the thumb draw technique. A perfect alternative for me, I might add(I shoot arrows the right side of the bow as with the thumb technique). Works just fine for me. Keep it up. Greetings from Slovakia

    It seems one advantage of this method is, you will have constant shooting form, your elbow always stays in right position and you will have a very firm anchor....not easy to move your hand around your face in that position ...... which causes stable and constant frame.

  • @hueym2196
    @hueym2196 Před 3 lety +1

    Historical point of view. This technique seems a horse ride techinque to remain more on target as it forces somehow a locking of the draw arm. A normal draw on unstable ground is knocked easier out of elignment of the drawing arm.

    Hello Armin !!!😀😀😀
    That is the "KINJAL" technique of shooting fast !!!
    But the arrows are taken from the back quiver , and nock , then shoot ...
    Is a technique whoo was used by hungarian horsemen in the ancient history , that is what I know ...then again , maby I am wrongh ...😇😇😇
    Great video Armin !!!
    Thanks for sharing !!!

    I started shooting like this after playing breath of the wild amd noticing how Link shoots his bow, i wanted to see if it would work and now exclusively shoot this way cause it feels more comfortable to me.
    I had no idea until today that is was done historically

    I have heard from Stephen Selby, an expert in Scythian bows, that most of the ancient Scythian bows he found in Xinjiang are with less than 50 pounds of draw weight. Perhaps heavy bows are not the main concern of the technique?

    • @ArminHirmer
      @ArminHirmer  Před 7 lety +1

      why should they have the fingers then like a claw? then they could like usually "long" fingers :)

    • @georgecheuk6547
      @georgecheuk6547 Před 7 lety +3

      I am not an expert for sure, so I prefer not to do any wild guessing, ha!
      The Scythians (or Sakas? or "塞" in ancient chinese text) he studied are the eastern tribes instead of the western Scythians (as indicated by the greek characters of the picture caption). So the findings may not be applicable to the tribes who lived near to the greeks.
      Anyway, I will certainly try this interesting technique. Thanks for your sharing!

      I tried on my 70 pound bow, without thumb finger lock for straightened it's not possible to draw, very weak with only 2 fingers.

    I tried this draw today. It was a very awkward draw for me. It made by bow hand straight and initially sent the arrows to the left. I guess it takes practice but I feel more secure and stronger with the thumb draw.

      the sacks are ordinary jute/burlap sacks from DIY store, filled with some old net/shade material. But you can fill them with old clothes or plastic bags too

      That's an excellent idea, targets are made far more expensive than they need to be really, I'll have to consider making some of these up to use in the garden

    Thank you, for a great channel. Fun videos and very educational. Watching your videos has without a doubt improved my archery. Is that one of those low poundage, one piece, molded plastic bows? Very inexpensive? The moment my local store showed one to me, I bought it. For the price, one premium loaner/trainer/beginner/youth bow. My main bow is a Attilla Arcus Hungarian model.......

  • @aziv00
    @aziv00 Před 6 lety

    I've been doing some research in Scythian archery and there is some evidence that (in the western region) they used a very short draw (arrows only 18"/45cm long). Since you have experience of shooting really small bows, is this release compatible with a short draw? (Love the videos by the way. Shame I came across your channel a month after I went on holiday to Malta)

    • @ArminHirmer
      @ArminHirmer  Před 6 lety

      Hi! I will try that, next days. But I think it will work great even with short draw. Which source did you use to come up with this. As on the drawings you always see them pulling back behind their ear. Thanks

      @aziv00 Před 6 lety

      Armin Hirmer I'll put together my evidence and email it to you. I would value your opinion. If it works out I may write a paper on it.

      I do not wish to be inopportune but it must be taken into account that ancient peoples rarely exceeded 1.60 meters in height. What for us, modern men, is a short draw It had to be actually normal for those times. Of course this is just my opinion.

    It kinda looks like the speed archery technique used by that russian girl. Dagger technique she call it? Only she use the left side of the bow like mediteranian style.

    • @ArminHirmer
      @ArminHirmer  Před 7 lety

      yes, she uses what we call reverse draw. here the arrow is on the right side, nice way too :)

    • @ogrelaca
      @ogrelaca Před 3 lety

      Hát, nem a máltai Arminnál. Ha rám hallgatsz, akkor felkeresed Szentendrén a Kelemen Zsoltit, esetleg Kassainál vagy a Farkas-Mónus Józsinál érdeklődj! A fenti technika teljesen használhatatlan - maga Armin is NÉZI, hogy mit csinál! Màrpedig így hajítófát sem ér az egész...

  • @chriswilcox8977
    @chriswilcox8977 Před 7 lety

    Often, imagery like that can historically be drawn in a way to put across a teaching point which can be missed by those looking without verbal information as well...more than possible it has been drawn backwards on the hand to show the draw, which would actually have been drawn more 'normally' so to speak...

    • @ArminHirmer
      @ArminHirmer  Před 7 lety

      thatswhy it is interesting to play around with it and figure something out, what works for you or not :)

  • @Burboss

    Seems like this type of draw makes speed shooting more difficult

    • @ArminHirmer
      @ArminHirmer  Před 7 lety +1

      I guess it always depends if you shoot a really heavy bow (then it can be slower) or a lighter on an attack....

  • @ogrelaca
    @ogrelaca Před 3 lety +1

    Sorry, Armin but this is NOT a Szittya/'Scythian' way - even you, yourself make it awkwardly and follow the movement with your eyes and fumble at the end. Three fingers, that is the old tradition (not 'Mediterranian' but Szittya/Real Scythian). For further analysis ask Mónus József, the world's best long-range archer: he shoots up to 600-700 meters.
