Dr Pulley Sliding Roller vs Round Roller in variator

  • In the video,you'll see the low gear shift of Dr.Pylley's SR is much lower than round roller and the high gear shift of Dr.Pulley's SR is also higher than round roller.
    So SR will provide powerful take-off and higher top end.
    next video: Why sliding roller is more durable?
    • Why is sliding roller ...

    Anyone who thinks round "rollers" actually roll needs to ask themself which surface it rolls on. Because if it's rolling on one side then it's slipping backwards on the other side. The Dr Pulley sliders work better because they are designed to do what they do and the round ones are designed to do something that they don't actually do. The flat spot wear that developes on round "rollers" is proof of that. Whether or not the Dr Pulley design will actually improve the performance of your scooter depends on the weight you use, but they should definitely last longer.

      The flat part isn’t because they don’t roll, it’s because they don’t roll/rotate 360 degrees. Since they only roll back and forth on a side of the roller, that side wears down while the other does not

    150cc Gy6 here .. I bought 13 gram Dr Pulley Sliders .. Turns out my stock rollers weighed exactly the same 13 grams on a postal scale .. I did gain 3 mph top speed with the sliders. Everything on my scoot is stock except for the spark plug and the CDI. The RPMs did NOT change at Wide Open Throttle. They stayed the same as it was when the rollers were installed. I know all these gy6 scooters are different and get different results, but mine gained a few mph with 13gm sliders in place of the stock 13gm rollers. Both tests were at about 4 in the morning, no traffic or wind to interfere with the results.

    Installed on 2020 xmax 250. Stock weights are 17 grams and i installed 17 grams dr pulleys. Its not faster on low speeds and revving 300 rpms higher on top speed. Tested with a different motorcycle before and after. Thinking about installing 18 grams but since its slower with same weights than original rounds its gonna be significantly slower on low speeds and rev the same as high speeds. I cant say its better than originals.. if i install 16 grams its gonna lose more top speed its already revving more with the same weights. If i install 18’s acceleration will drop. Whats your recommendation ? Should put stocks back? Thanks

Damn i spend weeks tuning a variator but only now i know you should only keep them in a good shape and if you want more speed just change the gear ratio in the wheel. Because the bigger the vario gets the more friction and wear on the belt. Adding Mallossi grease is also good but does not last long.

    I am not knocking Dr. Pulley however if the correct rollers profile and pulley diameter/taper has been machined and the weights travel from min to max as intended then the items are correctly doing their job. A different ramp profile with appropriate weights would give a different result. If the original manufacturer wanted the original pulley to give a lower gear for take off and a higher top end gear they would have machined it to do that purpose.
    Also if you require a certain minimum belt speed to cause the centrifugal clutch to engage (this being at the rear pulley)then lowering your take off gearing may not help you achieve the required rear pulley RPM for clutch engagement at the offered lower speed. All of this however is also affected by the design and springs used in the clutch & I am well aware that Dr. Pulley offers a good range which I assume overcome this obstacle to performance.
    My point is with all the correct components you will achieve the desired outcome of the manufacturer. The idea of replacing rollers with sliders as the only thing you do simply changes what the original manufacturer designed into the components for performance etc. I am sure much testing goes into making matched components but myself would not advocate fitting unmatched or untried components together on the hope of a improved power/performance outcome. Also the sliders have a larger contact area and we have all seen the rollers wear flats onto them self, so wear evidence indicates the larger "flat" surface area should provide longer slider life over roller life. (This is just offered to consider when mixing together components of different manufacture.) Evidence indicates Dr. Pulley is a good product when all components used and also correctly matched together.

    • @DrPulley
      @DrPulley  Před 5 lety

      I don't know if i understand your question very well, normally the movement of SR is only sliding, never rolling. But in some situation such as the movement of variator and V-belt is not in synchronized then there might be a gap existed when throttle is closed and roller is back to bottom position of ramp faster or quicker than variator back movement. At this moment the SR might tilt if the throttle is open again immediately after the throttle is closed.

  • @ninoechavez1402

    Hi man. Is the reason why the belt in the variator not riding higher at the top on WOT be because my slider is not heavy enough? I'm using 5g sliders at the momentno my stage6 vario and will still leave about 5-8mm on the sharpie marker. Got 1500rpm contra and 1000rpm clutch on the rear on a 792x16.6 belt. Take off is nice though.

    • @DrPulley
      @DrPulley  Před 5 lety

      Hi, we're not familiar to stage6 vario and as i know normally the height of V-belt is mainly determined by the shape of variator but the heavier SR did will make V belt go higher but will have defect about the acceleration.

      The oval one or the sliding roller is better than round one in durability, throttle response that means acceleration is better or no lag.

    All you guys are under the misconception that the round "rollers" actually roll in operation. You've got a round object sandwiched between 2 flat surfaces. If it rolls on one side it would have to "roll" backwards on the other side. Since this isn't going to happen it ends up just sliding. Which is what Dr Pulley "rollers" do too, but they are specifically designed to do that, whereas round "rollers" aren't, which is why they always develop flat spots. They are both just sliding weights, but the Dr Pulleys are better designed sliding weights. Just because something is round doesn't mean it rolls.

    • @DrPulley
      @DrPulley  Před 3 lety

      Hi, you're right the round roller is with hydride motion of rolling & sliding in the variator so you can see flat spots on the roller ( czcams.com/video/E5GXRF5zCsU/video.html#t=4.681244 ).

    I’m reading the comments in here I feel I have to leave mine.
    I’ve riding scouters for 20 years and just scooters for everything as I didn’t own a motorbike that I now do.
    I’ve done hundreds of thousands of km and never I had a scooter unmodified.
    I have tried every company there is for upgrade anything possible.
    My last scooter is a Vespa gts300 which has all the Malossi catalog added and goes really well with better 0-80 acceleration than a t-max530 my brother owns and top speed on tacho (which is very ambitious 150km )
    What I want to say is that I had Malossi variator in my last Vespa lx150 also modified to 190 and I needed rollers every 3-5000km. Then in my gts I read and decided to try polini as everyone said is better with 9 rollers instead of 6. It was great from performance point of view but again new rollers in very short time and then after 20.000km my mechanic said it needed replacement as it became unsafe to ride with because it became loose. So I opted for the “best” option I could find the j.costa evo 3. Acceleration was better the bike was always ready to take off but after just 1000km 3 of the roller fingers or however they call them completely broke and the rest were in bad shape and the cost to change was very expensive for just 1000km. So my mechanic said let’s try stock variator with dr.pulleys.
    I wasn’t very excited but I’m always open in new things so I said I have nothing to loose.
    I have at least 95% of the j.costa evo3 performance with a fraction of the price and what about longevity.
    32.000 enthusiastic km and they still look as good as new. I actually inspected them today and was sure I’ll have to replace them but no they are good at least for another service. I never ever heard a performance set of rollers lasting that much these sliders do and my mechanic puts them to every scooter that needs replacement with not one complain yet. Actually no one has yet managed to destroy them and asking for replacement. That to me sounds like a winner and I won’t look elsewhere anymore.
    That’s my point of view guys and you can learn something if you listen and save a few €€ by not making my mistakes.

      If we look at how it works, this type of roller does not rotate but moves. That way the friction on the roller surface with a face comp is very large. This will make the roller quickly damaged or perhaps the face comp drive is damaged due to friction. Spread the standard roller which rotates during displacement is safer due to mini friction

Engine run hotter, losing top speed and also degrade accelerating for passing. Removed and put back stock. What a waste of $55.

      For conventional round roller, it's true " Light rollers get less speed and stronger. Heavy rollers, higher speed on the road " but for SR sliding roller, its shape is designed specially to make low gear becomes much lower (much acceleration at initial step) and high gear becomes much higher (higher top-end at high gear) so you can select one suitable weight to get both excellent acceleration and higher top end.
