I noticed whenever people talk about the reason for carry-on only they never mention the main reason I do carry on only. Lost luggage. I don't think I can think of anything worse than showing up at your destination just to find out that your bag is in who the hell knows.
I've lost a bag ONCE, and it was the one time I shoved all the things I NEVER check in in my suitcase... I'd caught a horrible cold and decided that I didn't want to bother with a carry-on for my return trip, shoved everything but my phone and my passport in my bag & checked it, aaaand of course the plane arrived at my home airport with exactly zero checked bags.
I'd checked my coat, my glasses AND contacts (I only had the pair I'd been wearing plus ONE backup pair - and I wear dailies), my wallet, and even my prescription meds. It only took like two days for my bag to get back to me, but that's two days where I was almost-but-not-quite functionally blind.
Some mistakes you really only make once 🤣🤣
I just came back from a 3 month Europe trip and the Osprey Farpoint 55 was an amazing backpack! It was big enough to carry everything I needed, yet it was small enough to use as carry-on! Highly recommend!
Such a great example of your channels reach & influence. You could easily have turned this into a sponsored video but I really felt that you came across as genuine and you have actual solid advice from your experiences and really want people to buy the right backpack for themselves for their travels. Thanks guys
I'm from Costa Rica and I love when I find videos of people talking wonders about this country. It really fill us with joy knowing somebody enjoys it so much visiting this places.
Thank you very much for this amazing video.
When I'm staying in hostels I make a little "night time bag". It contains make up wipes, my toothbrush, my eye mask and melatonin. I leave it under my pillow when I head out for the day/night and that way, if I get back to the hostel after hours and it's dark I can easily find my sleeping essentials! I also tuck my pjs under there too:)
No matter what size my bag is, packing cubes are a life saver :)
Tom Bihn makes incredible bags, I have the Synapse 19 and it's the best all around travel and EDC bag ever. They also have the 25 liter and a new Hero's Journey I would definitely purchase for a intercontinental trip, their quality is unmatched and they're hand made in the US with a lifetime warranty.
honestly Tom Bihn bags are pretty nice, I have the Synapse 25, but had I see this review for the Osprey Farpoint I may have gone in that direction. The Synapse is well built, but design wise I find it to be a bit lacking for long periods of use especially if you have a smaller frame like myself. the shoulder straps of the newer Synapse are a little further apart and without the sternum straps the bag gets uncomfortable quick.
I have the Patagonia MLC, I really like this bag. My wife and I recently spent a month in Italy and Austria and was a great travel bag. The bag has a lot pockets on the inside and central part of the bag was open. A great bag for dashing between train stations.
Loved this! I was in the market for my own backpack, and this was perfect timing. Thanks for the tips.
Hey guys! I was just looking for this video last week. I bought an Osprey Fairpoint 40L. It is already packed and ready to go. I test drove it and looove the back support and hip belt. I am so glad you included the Osprey in your reviews. Great video, as usual.
I've been waiting for this video!! Thanks guys. Great content as always.
Lifesavers! This really helped me decide on which pack I should be taking on my travels. Really good stuff.
I recently returned from an almost month long trip in Italy and I used the Osprey Porter 46. Great bag. Locking zippers, which you can hide under the compression wings. For a day pack I picked up the Eddie Bauer 20 liter Stoway. It has hard rings, so I used some carabiniers to attach it to my osprey leaving no outward zippers exposed.
Thank you so much for this awaited video, couldn't come at a better time! Much love brothas
Love your guys feed! really helping sorting out my views on travelling. I have planned many, will start up soon ! thank you Fr amazing backpack lessons 😉
Crazy to think that not so long ago you guys were celebrating 200k subscribers, you guys are doing awesome! hope I can have the same success
Very comprehensive! I went with the Kelty and it's been my travel vlog companion for the last 5 months. I love it! It seemed like a better choice to me over the Osprey because of the location of the laptop sleeve. I wanted it closer to my back. Thanks for all the solid videos bros!
Thank you for the review guys, I have been looking for a new backpack!
Thanks for the advice guys! I'm going on a 6-months trip at the end of this year, and was looking for the Osprey Kestrel 58. Only problem with it is there is no daypack on it. Now I think I will buy the Farpoint 55. It's also cheaper here!
Keep up the good work!
I've actually got the Kelty and also have the Eagle Creek compression cubes! 16 months and counting and I've never felt like I needed more space! Great video guys!
Thanks for the tips, this was actually a very useful video! I need to pick me up a good travel backpack as I head into more travels this year!
Today I just bought Osprey Farpoint 55L! Can't wait to try it on the road!
This was great, thank you! My bag was too big and I wanted to downsize, so your bag tips helped a lot (especially the front-opening tip)!
I've taken my pretty blue Osprey Farpoint 40 with me around the world for the past year+ and I love it.
Seems to be the overall winner. Very solid design! Where have you traveled to with it?
Japan, Costa Rica, Iceland, and soon to the Philippines and India. I even use it for grocery shopping, haha.
KeepinIt350 I'm planning a year long trip around asia and I'm curious if 40L is enough to carry all I need. Was it enough for you? Do you also carry a laptop, extra shoes, camera..?
Normally I roll my eyes when people tell me to subscribe, but you guys are awesome so I actually did for once. Gonna do some travelling in a couple of months so this will definitely help. Thank you!
Love all vids on You Tube. This one just as awesome. Good selection of bags and has given us a bit to think about when we travel around India for a month later this year. And yes we have watched all your India travels!! Keep the vids coming guys. Love them
Patagonia's Cragsmith 45L is one of the best bags I've traveled with hands down.
Great vids guys! Im goin on my 1st back pack trip and your video help me a lot thanks!!
we have Kelty Redwing 50 and love how comfortable with it.
I have the Osprey Farpoint 55. I've even been on short air trips with just the small backpack. It's wonderful. I also use compressible cubes for packing clothes.
I love the Osprey brand. I currently use an Osprey Porter 46 for my travel bag and love it. I have a Osprey Day-lite day pack that attaches to the Porter but I'm not crazy about the way it attaches with loops and buckles, I find it difficult to attach the day pack. I like the stow-able straps on the Porter and I've never had a problem carrying it on a plane.
I used the same Red Osprey Farpoint 55L you guys reviewed for my 10 month trip around Southeast Asia and East Asia.. AND I'm still using it now for my 2 month trip in Australia and New Zealand. Seriously LOVE this backpack and all of its features.. its a very popular bag i see many other travelers use. I highly recommend it. In fact, i got 3 other friends to buy Farpoints for their Eurotrip. Also, all Osprey bags have a lifetime warranty... having piece of mind in knowing that your bag is highly reliable is worth the money! hope my feedback helps anyone else considering getting this bag.
Just got a Osprey Farpoint 55! Thanks for the recommendation!
Great Information Guys. Keep up the good work. Love Your Channel!
My mom and I went to Europe in 2015 and she carried a 35 L Osprey Sirrus and I opted for a 65 L Osprey Aura so I could carry some of her things in my pack since I was stronger and able to handle a fully loaded pack. Highly recommend getting the organization cubes if you go this route! We made sure to swap colors or tie strings to the handles so we knew which one had what we were looking for, without unpacking our entire bag! We were primarily on the train so we didn't need to worry about checking our bag!
Excellent video full of things I never even thought of. Thanks!
So helpful! Just got great deal on the Osprey Farpoint 55 L for my next trip to Thailand. Much love, Vagabros!
Great video. I can’t agree however with your recommendations. Rolling luggage that converts into a backpack is the way to go! You will find that 85% of the time you never need to carry your entire bag on your back but you’ll use the detached day bag every day. I’ve traveled the world this way and it’s so much better then carrying loads of weight on your back! The Eagle Creek Switchback International or Osprey 40L are great options.
I'm a huge fan of f-stop's bags! I just started using one for my trip to Iceland, and it was the perfect amount of space even with all my camera equipment. Love all your travel tip videos!!
+CC Overseas yah we love f stop too. Great bags but not everyone needs the camera storage
This is a really good video. I’ve bought a 36 liter backpacker and love it. It’s just so much easier traveling light.
Was very happy to see the bag from Patagonia on here, also combined with the eagle creek pack it cubes. I bought this in Canada just before starting a 2 week trip, and it’s going strong 3 years Later.
Perfect if you like everything tidy and easy to find.
This is the perfect video right now since I'm doing a trip around Australia for 2 months :)
I just bought the Osprey Farpoint 55. Absolutely love it :) About to go backpacking through Eastern Europe
Ebags mother loader junior is my go-to for domestic travel, even used on winter vacations. Very compressible. I'm going to Europe for 2 wks in August so I'm giving it a try there too. Great video! I liked the Patagonia too Marco!
I need this because I have no clue! But we're all about that carry on life!
Thank you guys. These videos are really boosting your subs! Can't wait to see you guys reach 1 million!
- Thania + Jose
these tips are soooo helpful! just ordered one for meself on amazon, thanks guys!
I only have a huge 70 liters backpack that i used during my interrail, when I went camping for three weeks so I am looking for a smaller backpack and this video is very useful! I don't know if I can find the same backpacks here in Italy but it gave me an idea for what to look for. You guys are awesome I'm loving every sigle video!
great video. thanks for sharing. love the last one with detachable pack.
used a lot of your tips to plan a trip to Montreal. love your channel!
U guys are amazing...all ur travel videos are awesome...thanks for making such nice and informative videos #appreciate...and keep doing the best in future as well...all the very best!!!
Literarlly just got my Patagonia MLC Black Hole in the mail today. I can't wait to use it, and it really seems like a great bag for both my business travel and somewhat extended trips to Europe, asia, etc.
For longer-term travel like WWOOFing I love the North Face Base Camp duffles. They don't have as many pockets and storage options, but you can fit so much and still carry it on your back! I then use pack-it cubes from Eagle Creek to organize. With this system I can unpack and set up a space of my own instead of living out of my bag.
I have the Osprey Ariel 55 xsmall which is 49 liters - small enough as carryon, but can really pack this thing up. Used it for month long trip in Peru during their winter.
Then I have Osprey Tempest 40 xsmall/small which is actually 38 liters. Did two month long Europe trip with that and had lots of room to spare.
I am a petite female and have gone through fittings several times at REI. Unfortunately, Osprey is the only brand that carries backpacks that can cinch down to my size. So I am limited but they offer good packs that work just fine for me.
Thanks for the review, these are suggestions I can pass along to my friends.
Thanks for sharing your tips! The Osprey Ariel is definitely a solid choice!
I am not trying to walk on vegabrother's toes. But, a really good camera backpack is the Peakdesign 30L. My partner is a professional photographer, and he also travels with me. So he tries to find bags that he can use specific for traveling and carrying photo gear. The bag has nice large side pockets which make it really easy to load your camera gear in and out. It has zipper locks to keep from anyone seeking into your bag. It looks sleek. Just google that, you will find it. There are a lot of features I am not speaking to, but I know he spent a lot of time and have used many different brands, and really loves this specific one. I know if I add a link it will think this is spam. Good luck!
My absolute favourites are the MEI Voyageur (40l) for longer trips and/or trips where you need warm clothes, and the Kanken (16l) for shorter and/or summer trips.
Great video. Appreciate you guys. Safe travels!
Wow! Really helpful video! :D Hi from Québec, love you guys!
I love these kind of videos that they make. Very helpful
I was waiting for this video since last year! It is super helpful! Thank you
+Yox Casmu sorry we made you wait so long but thanks for sticking with us Yox. Hope you enjoyed ✌🏼
I have the Osprey Farpoint in 40 liters and I pack my Matador Freerain 24 which I use as my day pack. I just came back from a month long trip to Europe and another month long trip to Mexico back in May, 2018 and this combination has worked very well for me. I will hopefully never have to check in my bags now that I started traveling with carry on only. Osprey Farpoint is a great bag!
this video is the one that made me a fan of vagabrothers . I bought the Osprey Farpoint for our first international trip, but because of Amazon's weird random deals, I bought two of the 70L, since it was cheaper than the 55L at the time. We purchased the S/M and even though it is 24inches in height and most carry-on limitations top out at 22inches, we had no trouble using it as a carry-on. Sometimes, even budget airlines like RyanAir checked our bags for free as a convenience to them, which the zip up cover on the back came in really handy. I'm 5'4" and my wife is 5'0" and we had no issues or complaints using the 70L because of the support straps that come with this pack! We are now using your videos to figure out our next trip destination!!!
I ended up getting the Osprey 40 because the 55 may not be accepted as a carry on everywhere. I matched this with a small PacSafe sling which works great for me. The Osprey carries everything while moving around and the sling is great for exploring towns and carrying essentials.
Osprey Nebula 34 works for me. Light, great carry on and you avoid the tendency to over pack if you had say a bigger 40 litre pack.
I was literally researching about this yesterday and I was looking for a video from you guys as your my favourite. What a coinsedence you release your video the day after! Luckily i concluded with the Opsrey Farpoint 40 anyway :) thanks for the video!
+Charlie Rose awesome! Thank you so much Charlie! Happy travels dude. Any plans for the summer?
Yeah - I'm headed to Portugal, Spain and Croatia for about a month and a half - going solo!! Super excited. Then i start studying on exchange in the UK for a semester!
Charlie Rose Mee too! I also got the same backpack. Happy travels and good luck with your studies.
I bought the Kelty Redwing 50 reserve for my eurotrip last winter for 5 weeks and it was AMAZING. Also I bought New Outlander packable backpack (33 l, for less than $20. Since the Kelty doesn't have a removable backpack) to use during the day for my sightseeing around the cities. I think it was the best way to go, because when I wasn't using it, I stored it on one of the side pockets of my main backpack. Totally recommend that combo, the Kelty + a packable backpack.
The reserve edition of the Kelty redwing 50 does have lockable zippers for extra security.
my deuter 28 l is perfect carryon its been to cuba twice all over canada and usa love it
Picked up the farpoint years ago and it's still my favorite one and stood the test of time. I handed it down to my bf and picked up another farpoint 55 last year for Philippines trip and it is still the best out there!
Awesome video as always from Vagabrothers! You guys should check out the Incase EO Travel bag I love it because the laptop section zips open for airport security so you don't need to broadcast your new MacBook to potential thieves, it also has that suitcase style mesh inside as well as a front section for accessories and camera gear ✌🏽
Look forward to all your videos!!! You guys are truly an inspiration! I want to pick up and go tomorrow! Hahaha. Thanks for all your tips, very useful!! :D
+Sasha Gutierrez thank you so much Sasha. Appreciate your comment and the support
I've been backpacking for the last year with the Osprey Farpoint 55 and I had no idea the day bag clipped onto the front! 😂 Thanks for the tip
Been an Osprey Farpoint 40 user here for over 3 years now. Been to the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Australia & Japan with it. Heading to London & Paris next month. No complaints whatsoever just the perfect size bag to take wherever i go 👍🏼
I've been waiting for this video for about 4 months hahaha thanks guys!!
Love this. I have a Kathmandu 45L that I love and did me well through winter in Europe but I don't think it's my best option for my trip to Asia next year. I'll have to try some of these on for size!
I have the Redwing 50, and it is the only thing I use anymore. Great value and always fits in the overhead.
Ok did more research and I’m most certainly purchasing the osprey 40 Farpoint backpack
I currently use Osprey 55L backpacking. It’s great! Thank you.
Definitely helpful guys, you really worth to watch.
My go to pack is the Kelty in 32L. It may be smaller but with a few packing cubes i was able to spend a few months in Europe in the dead of winter with room to spare. The top and side pockets are really quite large so you can fit things like a smaller Nalgene or sleeping pad if you so choose. External compression straps are nice too when you visit the nieces and nephew for Christmas and they send you off with extra presents =)
Although hard to find I absolutely love the Kelty 40l for women. It was perfect for 2 weeks in Europe. Forced us to pack light. We initially bought the Farpoint but at the time it didn’t come with waist belt which was dealbreaker esp with extensive walking on cobblestone, going up and down stairs etc.
On my first backpacking trip now!! Have the osprey farpoint 40 and love it. Ended up having a small day bag I carry with it but it's the perfect size. I'm going for 2 months from northern finland (snowy) to Santorini and so far cannot complain!
I'm a petite woman getting ready to go to snowy Europe- UK, Germany then other countries- 7 weeks, Thinking of getting this backpack. How did it work for you? Thanks!
I'm an osprey fan and I've been using Farpoint 55 and transporter global carry on 40. So far I'm loving both. I'm only travelling Asia though and I never had issues with the airline. Super versatile and rugged. I always bring bag cover though coz it just rains crazy here anytime of the day especially in Thailand Vietnam and the Philippines
I have the Osprey Farpoint 40, Its perfect for SE Asia, for all the reasons you said and more! (Just a note - the 40 litre doesn't have a removable day bag so the laptop ends up being the furthest distance from your back. This isn't an issue for me with a light laptop but for anyone with heavier tech the 40 might not be for you as the weight isn't evenly distributed!) Thanks Vagabrothers - your how to travel series is so useful!
Any thoughts about the Pac-Safe series of backpacks that are supposed to be good for anti-theft? Perhaps they're overkill?
So helpful. Thank you guys!
Osprey Porter 46. It can be synched down and also open front load and good support!
John luu .right, however the downside of porter46 is it doesnt has internal frame; while the downside of farpoint40 is it doesnt has internal lining.
Great video. I have the Osprey farpoint 40L and recently used it for a week long trip. It's just the right size and I like the fact that it opens up like a suitcase and have compression straps to make it all compact.
Love the video. Great content :)
used the Kelty Redwing 40L for Women for 6 months in Southeast Asia and loved it!
Great review! really helpful to find a new travel backpack. And... there are familiar sites I could notice in this video, temples, airports...
My travel bag is an ebags TLS motherlode junior. It's very similar to the Patagonia but about half the price and more outside storage. I've taken it to HK, Cuba, Morocco, and many other places and it's served me very well.
good content, really helpful!!
So so helpful! Thanks guys. :)
Osprey makes the best bags hands down! I backpacked New Zealand with my Manta AG 36 (a backpacking backpack with a front loading zipper!!!) carrying 15 kilos of camera, camping, and other travel gear- and it fit it ALL. The reason I opt for a smaller bag is because I'm a brutally efficient packer, but I have chronic back pain, so I can't carry too much weight. But Osprey's genius design and internal frame meant I could carry all of my gear on an 8 hour hike over a mountain without pain. I've heard great things about the Farpoint, but if you need some serious support and can make your gear fit, I would strongly suggest the Manta series.
I use the Farpoint 40 and stuff an Osprey Ultralight pack in for a day pack.
I second going to a store to buy. Most quality outdoor stores (REI, Sports Basement, etc) will do a backpack fitting with you and will adjust all the straps to ensure it's sitting on you in the most comfortable way. Will make your trip that much more comfortable!
Excellent point not selecting a technical backpack and looking for one with a hip belt and trying it on instore first. Please consider pack weight and dimensions if wou are travelling budget airlines. If security is your jam then the perfect option could be Pacsafe Venturesafe's 45Litre pack - it's my go-to for India and Asia. It's horses-for-courses - some trips my wheeler trolley is a better option. Happy & safe travels.
I use an element camp backpack, I got it unused 2nd hand for 30 bucks. 40 litres, roll top and zip with brilliant padding and straps.
Edit: great if you travel with a skateboard like I do, got a strap system.
Great review bros ;-) We love the Osprey and combined it with a Lowe Alpine Daypack... Don't tell anybody, but it is a golden design daypack if you consider to travel long term with two packs with you.
I have the Osprey Farpoint 55L. One hack I ALWAYS do to get the bag on the plane is to use the 40L main pack as your carry-on, and then detach the 15L daypack and use that as your personal item. I've never been stopped from taking it on this way, even on carriers like RyanAir and AirAsia!
👏👏👏👏 thank you!
