  • Take a look at a making of one of the best and most interesting VFX shots in history! Created for Star Trek: The First Contact it features the Borg Queen: visual effects by Industrial Light & Magic, visual effects supervisor John Knoll, visual effects art director Alex Jaeger, makeup effects by Todd Masters.

Borg Queen was also presented in Star Trek Voyager. But the shot was simpler and more CGI

Yes, there's a very similar shot in Star Trek Voyager, but it was done digitally - everything except Queen's head is CG, and then there is a cut, from the CG shot, to practical effect - actress in a suit. It doesn't look as good as in Star Trek: First Contact, but still quite impressive for a TV series from the 90's! czcams.com/video/WwDTtXpG--I/video.html

that morph is timed super well with the suit closing up and and her expression of feeling the sensation of connecting to the body hides any possible errors that could have happened for a truly seamless action. really great coordination from all departments on that one.

That morph is stunning and flawless. I still can’t see a shift in any of her facial features.

One of my favorite films which inspired me to do VFX myself. It's one of those rare movies where ( regardless of how it's done ) almost all fx shots have a conistent level of realism until the very end of the movie.

And yet, only one Oscar nomination, for Best Makeup. It lost... to _The Nutty Professor._

This is an amazing shot! I remember seeing it and being wowed! You don’t realise how much effort was required! Damn shame they cut it with data’s ugly face! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Thank you for this short but informative video. It brought me back to the good old days of Star Trek. A good distraction from today's madness.

That shot of her descending from the ceiling is the reason I love Alice Krige's Borg Queen so much.

This shot was amazing! I only wish they hadn't spoiled it in the trailer, though of course Paramount wanted to sell the movie and felt they had to. And also it would had been better without the reaction shot of Data cutting the one take in half. The one take was stunning.

I don't see how knowing about the edit would have saved them much or any work. The tricky part is the transition between the floating head setup and the full-body-costume setup, and that is still uninterrupted.

I always thought this scene was a pretty cool, if not disturbing, idea; but I also thought it always looked just slightly awkward or off for some reason. I think this is the reason they cut it into 2. The scene wasn't perfectly executed, although cool, so they spliced it to make it more believable. The decision to cut it was done after the effect was shot and finished. If it had been flawless, they would not have cut it. There, now you know the full tale. :)

Poor VFX guys, all that work to create a single take scene 🎬 and then Frakes comes along to cut it up 😂 they’re still salty about that one…every time they hear “the Riker manoeuvre” they think about this

I really didn't care for this entire concept. The craftsmanship is great, I just don't like the basic idea of it.
