Rhyolite Cliff Dwellers of Southern New Mexico

  • Until we get a cease-and-desist letter from Eucerin ™, we are making ourselves their unofficial sponsor. DON'T BE AN ASHY FUCK.
    In the Mountains near El Paso we find an extremely rare plant that only grows in the cracks of #Rhyolite Cliff faces, still blooming despite the brutal drought that the entire Southwest is in. We meet a cast of interesting symoatric species, including a tiny hairy succulent and a species of "resurrection plant".
    Patrick Alexander is the fucking man (and a kind and generous one at that) and we'd like to thank him for his assistance and consultation on this as well as many other New Mexico vids.

      @@boa9535 haha well the origin of me being stove is simply a play on the name Steve, which is my actual name. And before stove was a thing in my life people called me “young Steven” a lot as intended to be in a crowd that was a lot older than me at the time. An added bonus is that I made around 1000 bagels a day at my old job back when I first got the nickname, so I would link the two things for jokes. As in they call me young stove because I make bagels all day haha or something dumb like that.

    I worked with a palynologist at the University of Wyoming on age-depth modeling of pollen cores across the state. I also took a Quaternary paleoecology class from the same palynologist. People don't realize the same science we use to understand past climates is the same science we use to predict future climates. Soooo many different proxies are used to understand past climates, and they all arrive at the same conclusion: Humans are warming the damn climate. Smoke comes out of my ears when Dunning-Krugers casually dismiss the state of the science on predicting long-term climate trends.

    • @midesti
      @midesti Před 3 lety

      @@Theoppositesex I seriously doubt many elected legislators even know thermohaline circulation is a thing. If explained to them, they would probably revert to the common platitude, "The climate has always been changing, so there is no reason to assume humans are changing it now." Fortunately, this attitude is a lonely one on the global arena. I don't know how in-depth you're wanting to go on this topic, but the UN publishes climate reports periodically and publishes them here: www.un.org/en/climatechange/reports
      A good textbook that explains all of the different proxies that are studied as indicators of past climatic conditions: "Paleoecology: Reconstructing Climates of the Quaternary," by Raymond S. Bradley (Third Edition). It's a textbook, so it isn't cheap.

    I think that that big fat thing on the dry stem was an egg case for preying mantis. I got into galls last year and collected two of those from an area nearby. I see you are already ahead of me...Well, I stashed them on a shelf near this machine here and one day I was watching Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't and two tiny mantis were peeking at me from the edge of the display. So the chase was on to find more babies and put them on a Ficus tree outside that has ficus gall wasps all over it. Big wind storm this fall and I found an adult nearby after. Fat and sassy.
