- Hello friends, in this video join me on my working days in Brisbane as a surgical resident! The nomenclature out here is a little confusing but basically I"m not on a surgical training programme but a junior doctor (A "senior house officer", 3-years post graduation) on the surgical team. Enjoy!đ
About me:
My name is Surina Taneja and I am a junior doctor who trained in the UK. I make videos about being a doctor as well as sharing my insights on the well-being of our mind, body and planet đ§ , đȘđœ đ

A surgical resident in Brisbane!!! Hopefully, maybe one day in the next decade or so that will be me đ. Itâs awesome to find someone who is actually doing the thing I want to do in the country I live/probably will study in. This is the first video of yours that Iâve seen, Iâm just intrigued âșïž.
These day in the life videos are so insightful. Would love to see more daily vlog type videos like this! :)
A very close friend of mine had a major stroke which he shouldnât have survived. After two weeks on the general ward heâs got his own room in rehabilitation in STARS. This facility is amazing and has made a huge difference to his recovery. He has a long road ahead, but heâs got great care. Glad youâre enjoying your time here
Your transition is flawless
I used to live in South Bank, might've even been the same building đ. Seeing that lovely cityscape across the pedestrian bridge certainly brought on some nostalgia. Looking forward to coming back to the Royal next year.
So interesting. Would have loved being a dr but had to settle for a registered nurse which was also a very much loved profession for me. 57 years later I'm still at it and learn something new everyday .Wishing you much enjoyment and success from Cairns
Australia looks AMAZING!
i was waiting for this đ„â€ïž
Serena, I love your videos. Also Australia looks great.
Absolutely loved this vlog, super inspiring and a really cool insight to JMO life!
Also did I get a mini tute on management of postop thyroidectomies while watching youtube, 2 in 1 hahaha
As a former RN I enjoy the excitement you feel when learning or performing something new.. Brisbane is a lovely city but I didnât know that particular hospital existed. It has amazing dining areas and does look like a hotel. Enjoy your stay and learn lots.đșđŠđș
can u guide my through

It is so fascinating to watch.
You're awesome!!!
Just discovered your channel and I love your videos!
Thank you!!
Quite a few of the hospitals in brisbane are quite nice, The childrens hospital is honestly amazing, and Princess alexander has a fairly nice entrance lobby. Although the marter is kinda dated and average. But marter private is nice.
I would love to go to the University of Melbourne and do an exchange year to Oxford Uni. I'm wanting to study either medicine or engineering. I live close to Brisbane and when I was younger I was in an accident which resulted me in being admitted to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital (now QCH). If I study medicine I would love to work there, it's an amazing hospital đ„°
nice video, i would love to see more videos.
Thankyou so much for all the useful content . I was wondering if you have the option to move to Australia and complete your speciality training in Australia after your F3 year?
Itâs nice to have someone explain someone the difference between parathyroids and the thyroid, I at the young age of 25 needed one off my parathyroids removed and people are like oh do you need medications now Iâm like no I had hyperparathyroidism itâs different!
Beautiful video

Thank you so much for always sharing information. It is quite informative and beneficial for all of us. I also would like to view your blog on how to get AMC registration for an IMG in uk and opportunities for specialty training in surgery. Happy New Year!!
Thanks! Iâm not an IMG in the UK so Iâm not too sure about that. All information about applying to CST generally is online and in my other videos but not sure about IMG specifically đ
@@drsurinataneja thanks dear for sharing!! Hope to see your blog on surgical training in Australia too in the future đ
Thank u so much ,love ur video, May I know about the possibility to getting into surgical specialty training and is there IMGs u know who have get in.? Is it an impossible thing after gaining general registration????
Canât say surgery is my thing, but itâs my dream to get a job like this
Hi doc , thanks for the amazing content. How difficult is it for an img to get into surgery ?
You are probably the perfect person to answer my question. Iâm not a medical student but Iâm writing a book about one. I was hoping you might be able to please explain to me what a person who intends to be a surgeon is likely to be doing at age 25 assuming they began the process straight out of high school? What stage of their career and if theyâd likely be financially independent by that time. Appreciate the help!
Within the UK - they'll probably be about to start surgical training and yes will be financially independent as will have been working for 1-2 years by then. (You graduate from medical school at 23/24 and then start working in different rotations for 2 years before specialising)
@@drsurinataneja appreciate it. As far as I know the Australian system is quite similar đđ
@@drsurinataneja Hi is working as a resident medical officer extremely stressful in Australia? I heard it is in UK....and a bit less in Aus...

No MRCS is not valid in australia they have their own exams for surgery!
@@drsurinataneja if you dont mind can you tell me who are eligible to give exam .. i mean what is the minimum qualification required to practice surgery in australlia
@@drsurinataneja thank you so much for reply đ
Hi
I am currently working as a sho in trauma and orthopedic in nhs. There is a myth that surgery job is not available in Australia or they don't welcome img from uk. Is that true
Tnx
There is a lot of competition from Aus docs alone and it requires having a lot of consultant support from within the Aus healthcare system. As it will take a while to establish that as an IMG it might be harder to get on to the training programme than it is in the NHS.
@@drsurinataneja tnx for your reply.
I was in sydney. To comeback in australia through competent pathways I have appeared plab and currently working in t & o.
Is it hard to get surgery job offer as fy3 in Australia those are trained in nhs 2 years.
People are asking to do a&e as the job is available in Australia.
I noted you had a excellent entry to Australia healthcare in surgery. That's why I am seeking your advice

As long as they donât get too addicted to the money and benefits and let that effect their bedside manner.
what's the shift hours u work, generally in a weekday, in Brisbane as a junior doctor.
All over the place but averages 38 hours a week

Hello, I loved your video! What are the criteria we have to meet, in order for a European resident should be able to continue or at least restart general surgery residency In Australia? Ty very much In advance ! Keep up the good work!
Hello! I'm not too sure as I am not on a training programme here but to get on to the surgical training programme here you need to pass a surgical exam (GSSE) before you can apply.
@@drsurinataneja Ty very much!

Yep

I am affected hepatitis b, can I apply work visa in Australia
Hi Surina. Your videos are very inspiring & I just subscribed to your channel. I am an IMG chasing an MCh in Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology) at CCCU in September 2022 and also prepping for the PLAB 1 & 2 in 2023. I am also considering writing the MRCS (ENT) in January 2024 upon completing my MCh program. Armed with all these credentials, what are my chances of getting into specialty training (with the ultimate aim of becoming a consultant) in UK and Australia. Which country is better in terms of salaries, work-life balance, personal & professional development etc. Someone advised that armed with all the afore-mentioned credentials, i should chase unaccredited jobs in ENT, then write GSSE and then apply for SET...what's your sincere advise?
I agree with that advice! Aus better for pay and training I think. Work-life balance is down to you, although officially less hours in the working week here the overtime you rack up ends up being equivalent or more to hours worked in the NHS, you just get paid a lot better for it in Aus.
@@drsurinataneja Thanks for your reply. I sent a connection request on LinkedIn. Please add me up, let's connect. Thank you
how much salary we can expect for neuro surgeon
Dr How difficult it is for an IMG to get surgical training in Australia?
Start with non training jobs, do for a few years to build CV and get consultant references and then apply! Pretty competitive but depends on your references and how well you interview. You also need permanent residency to apply for training programmes. Cities are much more competitive than rural areas.
How to get residency in Australia...do they accept usmle scores?
Nope - Aus have their own exams. More details in my UK to Aus videos :)
