When I was a child (around 7 or 8yrs old) my first tank was for crayfish. When I was 12yrs old I had cut other people's grass to save up to buy my friends 10gal setup with tropical fish. Then I gotten the idea to keep native fish instead of tropical fish.
Keeping native fish and having a reef setup has been my favorite aquarium setups

I grew up in South FL (in the 60's-70's) and had a canal running through our property... my first tank was a 10 gallon with whatever I could get out of the canal... I had a filter & a light but used canal water to fill it. There was a tropical fish farm not far from us and during the rainy season or big storm, their inground ponds would overflow with fish getting into the canals, roads etc.... I caught beautiful fish right out of the flooded streets!! Also turtles, crayfish, mudpuppies.......

I used to have several tanks, had to let them go due to space, but my wife and I are moving soon and ill be getting the basement or garage (whichever is bigger) for new tanks! Wish I could find you on Facebook to just chat every once in a while

Technically, my first ever aquarium was one of those Aquababies cubes when they were a big thing. I had the fish first and then picked up a dwarf frog and he lived for like 8 years. The first tank I ever set up myself was a 5 gallon that I had a betta in. It just kind of grew from there. I had a 35 gallon for a while that housed a trio of red belly piranhas and then convict cichlids. Then I got curious about keeping native NA fish and now I have a 40 with 2 grass pickerel, a 125 with a warmouth, black bullhead, and walleye, and 625 gallon pond with a grass pickeral, 2 yellow perch, a rock bass, 2 redear sunfish, 1 bluegill, and 1 hybrid bluegill that somehow tripled in size in less than 2 months.
